I bet education will be more important than ever. Prestige, status etc to distinguish yourself. "Taste is all that's left," as someone said here.

We're only a few years into this whole thing...

In any case you can say the exact same thing about reading. Take the book away and bam, you know nothing. A person who memorized the book is not dependent on an expensive, heavy thing like a book.

It's my understanding that this same debate raged when writing became a thing. Many viewed it with suspicious, or derision, as memorization was the big intellectual thing. So writing and reading back to remember was terrible. It's true it was a dependence, but the value was too high. With reading and writing a person could work on and synthesize from a far wider range of concurrent materials than one could with just memorization and recitation. Yeah, it's lame cheating, but writing enables a lot and so it won out.

I dunno, Nixon,
timcobb··on Processing in Memory: DRAM Is About to Do Math
Eh it's okay. It's just that, man, computers were already so well along by 1998, when I hear "age-old" I think like the 60s, 70s, _maybe_ 80s--but 90s?! oh well! I did a few double takes assuming my mind had flipped the 9 and 8 in 98, but no :D.
timcobb··on Processing in Memory: DRAM Is About to Do Math
Age-old... 1998... :grimace:
timcobb··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
Just because two substances are made of a similar distribution of atoms it doesn't mean much in terms of how one can be transformed effectively into the other...

Yeah we live in the era of alternative facts and this is just more, at best, "fact checking"
timcobb··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
It is (not sure I agree, but I can see how one would think this) but you're not going to solve it like this
timcobb··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
Yeah this is what I don't get why are people even spending time on this.

timcobb··on Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer
Debit cards charge as credit cards no problem. That said not having a credit card is tough on your credit history. You could just have one and pay the balance but then they still have all your data, it sucks

> Putin's domestic power base will not let him suffer a defeat.

Too bad though, don't start wars man. No one is going to throw you a bone if you start a war that no one else wants happening. If you star a war, you need to be able to finish it. It's like that Seinfeld line about the car reservation, except wars. You don't get points for being scary, you get points for winning.

> This is a worse security outcome for the U.S. than having a hostile dictator in charge of Russia;

I disagree... bigger picture we don't want this kind of thing festering, it never works out well. It's not managable, despite people acting like these things can be managed. They can't, and that's why we're seeing this situation. Similar to Hamas in Gaza. It was left to fester, thought it had more clout and power than it did, and look what happened. Nothing good.

> The Soviet Union did just that 35 years ago, and it could easily happen again this generation.

Russia is going to fall apart, we're going to be left with Muscovy, God willing.

Hmm I thought the asset is the block chain entry because that's what you have the key to, that you can re-sell to someone else. It's like crypto, no?

Hahaha thanks for this. It's ok, the asset is the block chain entry duh
timcobb··on The Sloppification of Peptides
How is insulin a peptide? Insulin is a giant folded protein
timcobb··on The End of an Athlon
This happened to me several times with Athlons in 2000, the die on these would break exceptionally easily such that it was a known issue at the time. You had to be quite careful.

But Russia and Putin can end the war at their earliest convenience. Your perspective discounts the agency of the aggressor, places all agency in weaponry (as opposed to the will of the defenders) and doesn't acknowledge that the Biden approach offered a continuous off-ramp that should have been taken. I'm not sure how allowing Russia to not suffer defeat means that they must continue their barbaric war against Ukraine.
