timcobb··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
I wish someone would tackle this question; reviving the SR71 seems like a thing for enthusiasts without any imaginable practical purposes
timcobb··on ChatGPT Pro 500
This approach is fun and rewarding but I think it makes sense to do this if/when models really stall out. Right now opus 5.5 is... amazing. I wouldn't use anything else.
timcobb··on ChatGPT Pro 500
They probably had this all planned out before Opus 5.5 dropped and are staying the course. Or have something really good up their sleeves.

that's the mobster-loyalty mentality, and it's not how successful (read: desirable for the most people) governments function

timcobb··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
I'm guessing the more integration tables they consume, the better they become at integration.

I also guess that they're targeting languages that aren't tier one for them yet. Like, Japanese is probably a relatively small corpus for them.

timcobb··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
> Its already been shown synthetic training data is just as good if not better.

Source, please! I'm a machine learning layperson but how can this not be overfitting?

timcobb··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
You can't really replace the smartest individuals because if you take a person who's not "smart" they can't do much with the AI.

I think the more accurate description of what's happening is that access to expertise is becoming commodified.

timcobb··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
What's the connection between this message and 2005? It was published then?

timcobb··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils

timcobb··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
> There are people who genuinely think quality does not matter as log as it is written in Rust as Rust is memory safe.

Is this hyperbolic? Such people are in leadership places?

timcobb··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
> The reason for existence of uutils is ideological, not technical.

which ideology? Are people saying that there's an ideology of pushing rust for things without concern for quality? Sincere question, because I'm seeing that on this thread and I wasn't aware that that was a thing beyond the "re-write it in Rust" meme.

timcobb··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Cargo culting is still a thing, the power imbalance is still real here. Kicking people out is generally much trickier than letting them in, these aren't simple things. Remote populations aren't global idea consumers at the internet-accessible global ideas mart.

timcobb··on Watch AI materials-science and bioscience abilities closely
Haha thanks for the check, I am, tbh, pretty surprised. It's within the same order of magnitude, which is interesting too.
timcobb··on Watch AI materials-science and bioscience abilities closely
I doubt our flying machines are anywhere near as energy efficient as birds. Our flying machines combust jet fuel, birds can fly by ATP. Not to mention earth-destructing.

And going into space is pointless why would any animal ever develop such a facility :)

timcobb··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
> But the AI is not the problem there; the economic system is

These two things are surely related eh?

> Torches and pitchforks should be properly applied to the economic and the political elites, not to data centers.

What's the difference between these? You can't actually separate them meaningfully, unless you, uh, nationalize the data centers at which point... :|

timcobb··on We must pace the frontier
> why cant people here just read this for face value?

Because that would be foolish.

What part of public good is stealing giant corpuses from their owners and selling them back to them? People who show contempt for laws do so pretty consistently usually.

It's really sad that people fall for this stuff over and over again.

timcobb··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Just cause something has already happened many times to other people doesn't mean it's not special or interesting when it happens to you. It's been extraordinary seeing this unfold before me.

And I think it's worth noting that the novel thing about what's happening now is that, unlike before, when physical labor was devalued and commodified, we are now seeing intellectual labor, even at its highest levels, suffering the same fate.

timcobb··on Fuck it, make it anyway
So what's your function now?
timcobb··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Yeah I agree but I think the question these days isn't about the workplace anymore, it's about the meaning and value of human endeavor.
timcobb··on Fuck it, make it anyway
My first thought after reading this was, good for this person to have only been broken, or nearly broken, I guess, by society finally now.

I was broken long before AI. I learned that no one was interested in my doodads even before generative AI. People were interested in all this other stuff, like ROI, how much money things make, how practical something is, etc. "No one cares about the code" was beat into me 10-20 years ago. Big ups to Joel for making it this far.
