timboslice··on Facebook No Longer Likes the Word 'Users'
>"Daily average people" instead of "daily average users"

Seems like a hollow argument more about semantics to me. Yeah yeah, we get it. Your users are people too.

To the local corner store, I’m a customer; to Southwest, a passenger. Each institution may refer to their customers in a different manner, but it does nothing to change the fact that they are a customer/consumer.

>As somebody once said, it’s kind of arrogant to think that the only reason that people exist is to use what you built. They actually have lives, like, outside of the experience they have using your product. So the first step to designing in a human-centered way is to recognize that they’re humans.

Just because I am a "user" does not mean I only use your product

timboslice··on Cornell to Digitize a Rich Hip Hop Archive
>closer to closet racism/classism at worst

I wouldn't go that far, but mindless and unintelligible? Have you been exposed to the variety of hip hop that is out there?

Aesop Rock, Action Bronson, Deltron 3030/Del the Funkee Homosapien etc etc

Here is an interesting post that classifies hip hop artists based on their vocabulary and word usage:

timboslice··on Microsoft accepting Bitcoin
Something similar happened to me too as a kid, but I was able to create a second account (first account was using my Dad's information, with permission).

They are notoriously difficult to work with as a vendor. I had someone pay for the last milestone of a project, then after the goods were delivered, filed a chargeback with their credit card company. The CC company ruled in his favor, and Paypal offered no way to dispute. I was left with the -$1,500 balance

timboslice··on Reverse-engineering the new “captchaless” ReCaptcha system
I remember seeing you post something about this back in the day (maybe on WF?)

timboslice··on Nearly Every USGS Topo Map For Free

timboslice··on Losing the sense of smell predicts death within five years
Thanks!

> 3,005 community-dwelling adults aged 57–85 were studied in 2005–6 (Wave 1) and their mortality determined in 2010–11 (Wave 2). Olfactory dysfunction, determined objectively at Wave 1, was used to estimate the odds of 5-year, all cause mortality via logistic regression, controlling for demographics and health factors.

timboslice··on Analysis of Quirky: Do Consumers Know What They Want?
Interesting. Reminds me of survey bias - where people answer one way because they think that's what you want to hear, or because it aligns with their own perceived values, but they _act_ a completely different way.

Can surveying the crowd for inventions produce mass-marketable ideas? Probably. Does a large part of the value chain have to do with marketing and distribution? Undoubtedly.
