tim_iles··on Gigaom Closes Down
I pay for the Launch Ticker (https://www.launchticker.com/). No linkbait or hyperbole, just key facts about the latest tech stories.
tim_iles··on You Don't Know JavaScript Book Series
More likely the common phrase, "you don't know jack shit".
tim_iles··on Ask PG: What Is The Most Frighteningly Ambitious Idea You Have Been Pitched On?
Guess it's a case of not being ready to execute on the idea yet? If so, not sharing until you're ready to start executing would be your best option.
tim_iles··on MixRank: A Hacker News Comment Leads To Profitable Y Combinator Startup
*MixRank (FTFY)
tim_iles··on JQuery plugins site accidentally deleted - last backup one year old.

tim_iles··on Voxel, a 3D pixel editor in HTML
Why does the perspective of the drawing grid appear to get wider as it gets further away?

edit, to answer my own question: it doesn't get wider, it just doesn't shrink into the distance either. It still feels odd not having perspective.

tim_iles··on UK government response to my letter about programming in schools
For whatever e-petitions might be worth, here exists a "Teach our kids to code" petition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/15081, started by Emma Mulqueeny (http://mulqueeny.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/teach-our-kids-to-...)
tim_iles··on How Github uses Github to build Github
Ok, this is what I also assumed - although I would never rely upon this as part of my continuous deployment process, I guess it does little harm to still monitor and be aware of such things...
tim_iles··on How Github uses Github to build Github
Sorry, what do you mean by Twitter search feed?
tim_iles··on Bring a stick man to life.
It's using Raphaël, http://raphaeljs.com/
tim_iles··on Another 'Android from the perspective of an iOS developer' Post
of which bit?
tim_iles··on Another 'Android from the perspective of an iOS developer' Post
As a developer using Visual Studio in my day job for the past six years, I simply cannot get a hold of Eclipse. I have tried repeatedly, and failed because it is so very clunky, slow, and unintuitive. Have recently been playing with IntelliJ, and think I will stick with this for the time being.

However, of course, Visual Studio with Resharper has just spoilt me rotten, can't expect that environment from every IDE.

tim_iles··on Show HN: Weekend Project - Create Simple Android mockup
Hmm, I find the double-click-to-delete feature unintuitive, and too easy to delete elements accidentally. I was clicking some text to edit it, and ended up deleting it by mistake.

Otherwise, great tool!

tim_iles··on Own Your Identity
Hotmail, despite improvements, is still terrible.

There are three (or 4) areas of action links on the page, to ensure that I never remember where the print button or Reply all button is.

It regularly junks emails from lists I'm subscribed to, apparently hitting "not junk" is not enough to mark it safe for next time?

The login page has a session that can expire - if I haven't logged in within five minutes of opening the login page, I get thrown backwards again for session expiration. Sometimes I consider not bothering attempting to re-log in.

Perhaps I've just been spoilt by Gmail.

tim_iles··on Why Naming Your Company Sucks
Seems to be down right now..?
tim_iles··on Duke Nukem's PR threatens to punish sites that run negative reviews
Maybe it just seemed to get better as more and more braincells died?
tim_iles··on Tower Bridge bot killed by Twitter, replaced with marketing
A tech marketer with a github profile?
tim_iles··on You have exactly three passwords, don't you?
I employ a similar tactic, and I can't recall ever one single site that I use changing its name. If it happened, I would then just change the password to reflect the name change, but it would be so infrequent that I'm not worried about it.
tim_iles··on Inspired by XKCD:903, Wikipedia steps to philosophy
Last time I downloaded Wikipedia, it was 4.5GB. If I were to knock up this hack, I would definitely scrape pages instead.
tim_iles··on Stack Overflow Makes Slow Pages 100x Faster By Simple SQL Tuning
Further to other replies, I also find that the mental shift between languages is always a gear change that slows down development. Especially shifting to your SQL brain.
tim_iles··on Dear Internet: Take the reset buttons off your damn forms
The expected behaviour is that navigating away will not submit the data. That's pretty much consistent across all interfaces I know, with the exception of saving as draft, which still does not "submit" the data to the human recipient on the other end.

However, I do agree that clearing the message can have its uses, but as it's a secondary action, it deserves a far less prominent position for the button (e.g. maybe as an option on the long-touch menu, but at least not where you'd expect the Send button to be). On this app, it's in the primary action space and doesn't ask confirmation before wiping your message.

tim_iles··on Dear Internet: Take the reset buttons off your damn forms
In Messaging on the Facebook app on Android, you have Send on the left and Clear on the right. Gets me far too often, and it's just not even necessary. If I don't want to send what I started writing, I simply hit back. Hate it.
tim_iles··on Firefox Add-ons with the Slowest Start-up
Regardless of Add-on start-up speed, I found annoyance with Firefox itself. Occasionally on launch, I would be asked whether I wanted to install or skip updates to my Add-ons.

I found this process of having to choose to install or skip to be too much of a distraction, killing my flow when I was "in the zone" and wanted to look something up fast.

For this reason I stopped using Firefox and have been happy with Chrome ever since.

tim_iles··on Paul Irish on HTML5 Boilerplate
Agreed. His videos are also entertaining to watch (particularly both videos on things learnt from the jQuery source).
tim_iles··on Ask HN: RSS Reader that doesn't suck?
I love NewsRob app on my android, it syncs with my Google Reader for offline use.
tim_iles··on Ask HN: Where are all the London hackers working on startups?
Shame - I've been to two of these HN meetups, and last night I met a lot of people working on interesting ideas. Most of these ideas were actually projects that are too early to call a startup but could possibly have potential.

Maybe I got lucky and chatted to the right guys.

tim_iles··on The mistakes I made in Quora
I did. It seemed to me he was trying to emulate Jon Skeet's Stack Overflow reputation (ref: http://scobleizer.com/2011/01/02/crack-for-technical-recruit... ) but looks like he misjudged his effort.
tim_iles··on Do a startup or travel around the world?
Surely there's an implied "Either" at the beginning of his question? That's how I would read it.
tim_iles··on AOL Acquires Personal Profile Startup About.Me
I reserved my regular handle but never returned to set up my page.
tim_iles··on Ask HN: What did you get for Christmas?
Sony LiveView controller for my Android - haven't played with it yet but hoping it's a good prototype of what might be increasingly common auxiliary controller for mobile devices.

Mongoose poop coffee beans.

Hopefully Metaprogramming Ruby but it's yet to arrive...

A Faith No More t-shirt that says, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY FUCKER".

Got Dance Central for my sister, for her xbox Kinect, it's awesome.

Happy days :)
