tigerBL00D··on Cloudflare CEO on the Italy fines
They should fight it. But why does he have to suck up to JD Vance and Musk I the same post? I kind of lost empathy at that point.
tigerBL00D··on ChatGPT Health is a marketplace, guess who is the product?
There's some irony in that, sure. But at the heart of the matter is privacy. It's about what you input into the chat, not about the output.
tigerBL00D··on How we automated federal retirements
Yes! Whoever built the data warehouses and keeps the data pipelines running would seem to be the real heros of this story. I sure hope that group did not get gutted by DOGE.
tigerBL00D··on America is now one big bet on AI
It's still a bubble if it happens that investors' expectations are unreasonably inflated. Most expect return on their invested capital.
tigerBL00D··on Google appears to have deleted its political ad archive for the EU
This is a very naive comment IMHO. There are very few governments in the word, if any, which could be trusted with something like that.
tigerBL00D··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
A very cool game! I just wish I could look around while standing still. Well done.
tigerBL00D··on ChatGPT Pulse
Only is not AI. It's LLM, diffusion models and what have you. The term AI became so overloaded that it means almost nothing these days. AGI is still hard to reach for, but it doesn't stop all kinds of spin artists from trying.
tigerBL00D··on F-35 pilot held 50-minute airborne conference call with engineers before crash
Am I the only one thinking that it's time for something like an R2D2? Presumably it could get into some crammed spaces and thaw things out of needed. I'm sure it's a stupid idea, BTW, but a fun one )
tigerBL00D··on CVE program faces swift end after DHS fails to renew contract [updated]
To be fair, we don't yet know how capitalism ends.
tigerBL00D··on Scientists break down plastic using a simple, inexpensive catalyst and air
It says "Leveraging the trace amounts of moisture in air, the broken-down PET is converted into monomers—the crucial building blocks for plastics. From there, the researchers envision the monomers could be recycled into new PET products or other, more valuable materials." I don't know if there's some enormous challenge hiding behind the word "envision", but I'm assuming it's a closed system until something useful comes out of the other end. The method just can't be a lot more expensive than to make the same thing/material from scratch or it's never going to gain traction.
tigerBL00D··on Meta puts stop on promotion of tell-all book by former employee
Just got an audiobook from Kindle. This legal development pushed me over the edge of curiosity. Very interesting.
tigerBL00D··on Mysterious New Jersey drone sightings prompt call for 'state of emergency'
I would not write this.off as hysteria. It's important to consider motivation of potential actors. Every advanced rocket guidance system uses cameras to zero in on its targets during the final approach. You can't rely on GPS at that point. To do a good job you need to know what your target looks like and high resolution drone imagery helps a lot.
tigerBL00D··on The Impact of Jungle Music in 90s Video Game Development
Thank you for putting this together. For a certain generation this resonates strongly. For me in the mid to late 90's getting into coding and hacking assembly while listening to and coding underground music in trackers were huge influences that have had their impact on the trajectory of my life and my social circle.

P.S. Let's hang out )

tigerBL00D··on Houston-area residents enter sixth day without power, air conditioning
It seems like a lot, but a few billions of dollars also seems like a good deal to secure against increasing risks for severe weather. What's the total economic impact of future storms? To put it in perspective a single Patriot missile battery costs about a billion dollars and a single missile costs $4M.
tigerBL00D··on Houston-area residents enter sixth day without power, air conditioning
I don't think the difference between the power grid and the power utility is clear to most people. The grid is a statewide wholesale electricity distribution network which consists of generators, substations and high voltage long distance transmission lines. The utility is in charge of taking the power from the grid and delivering 110/220V to end customers, i.e. homes and businesses. This hurricane caused a lot of damage to the utility infrastructure. The grid performed fine.

Some people bring up the storm Ian in 2021. Winter storms are fundamentally different disasters. Cold snaps drive up local electricity demand sharply and this is the kind of thing that can stress the grid.

tigerBL00D··on F-35 Gen III Helmet Mounted Display System
Anything truly valuable is of course classified. This is to reveal no new information while showing something to the taxpayer about what billions are spent on. It's a delicate and awkward dance.
tigerBL00D··on You'll regret using natural keys
This is a bit contrived to illustrate a problematic case. Every business has a unique ID that's assigned to it before it can operate. EIN or even a state id together with state would be a fine natural key for most situations.
tigerBL00D··on Ticketmaster confirms data breach with a SEC filing
I see both sides of this, but I think I would side with the original comment. It's not just blind outrage or something like that. The point is that there ought to be impact on Ticketmaster business. The messed up and there should be a cost to the company. They should be paying big fines or compensating their users. It should be entirely possible for a company to go bankrupt in such a situation which would incentivise better internal practices.
tigerBL00D··on Police in Austin, San Francisco skirt facial recognition ban
I live in Marin and police in my small town frequently arrest criminals using automatic license plate scanners that guard every road that leads into town. Most of them drive from SF over the bridge after committing various crimes. Our town is a very safe town. I feel safe leaving the front door unlocked or keys inside the car in the driveway. Unfortunately everything changes as soon as I cross the bridge.

So the question is this: if your house got robbed and/or you family got hurt, wouldn't you want technology to be on your side?

tigerBL00D··on Google has another secret browser
If I read that correctly, in the second case someone can bypass the pinning feature to access your personal information via the default browser's active sessions. That would be a compromise if that's the case.
tigerBL00D··on Chicago’s parking meter disaster
So... what if these meters suddenly started breaking all over the place? Who's contractually liable to keep them operational?
tigerBL00D··on ‘Tesla syndrome’ explains why tech is making us miserable
"The only problem is that Teslas suck." Don't you love when articles are based on opinions not supported by any rigorous arguments? I've owned two Teslas (and still own a Model X) and I drive between 10 and 20 different other car brands/models every year due to travel. I also test drive any electric car that catches my eye. And I can say very confidently that Tesla's don't suck if you compare them to other cars available out there. They are quite refined and well-engineered. Model X is really quite a marvel from the technical and comfort standpoints.
tigerBL00D··on AI-generated art cannot be copyrighted, rules a US Federal Judge
Wow. According to the article the US copyright office refused to issue "copyright to Stephen Thaler for an AI-generated image made with the Creativity Machine algorithm he’d created." Doesn't this strike you as nonsense? Consider that one can make a chisel and use that chisel to create works that can be copyrighted. But apparently one cannot write a program that will be used to crate copyrighted work? How do you even draw a clear line between "AI" and "not AI" considering that the term AI is very loosely defined?
tigerBL00D··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
Blaming the government for poor investment decisions is just ridiculous. The playing field is level yet they are the ones to eat shit. They didn't diversify. They didn't consider macroeconomics. They didn't limit deposits despite having no game plan. It's pure greed and mismanagement.
tigerBL00D··on A corrupt file led to the FAA ground stoppage – also found in backup system
What kind of database are they using, I wonder, to end up with such a spectacular failure?
tigerBL00D··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
I get upset hearing news like this because it dismantles comfy beliefs. Some part of one's identity is inevitably linked to the national identity. I guess the way to not get upset is to remember that there are really no good governments. Any government, if unchecked by the people it tries to govern, will exploit and oppress while doing its utmost best to maintain a positive image.
tigerBL00D··on Google is shutting down Stadia
I'm surprised. It seemed like a solid platform. Why can't Google build a business that just works and grows organically without having to completely dominate a field?
tigerBL00D··on Show HN: I built an extension for analyzing rental properties in Zillow
I am not here to defend any particular group, but I just don't think this comment is fair to anyone. At the end of the day anything that can help the market become more efficient is a good thing.
tigerBL00D··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
It is always sad when a good person passes, but this royal institution is ridiculous.
tigerBL00D··on An odd discovery on Spotify
I listened to the playlist and it's definitely the same song over and over again with slight tweaks. Imagine finding dozens of blogs where posts are all the same, but with very slight changes to vocabulary used in each blog.
