tigerBL00D··on Chinchilla's Wild Implications
Naive question about units. Are all three terms on the same scale to make direct magnitude comparison meaningful?
tigerBL00D··on Asus Zenfone 9
Is this thing going to overheat like all other snapdragon 8 phones (pixel 6 etc.)?
tigerBL00D··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Luckily this kind of unsubstantiated trash comment is rare on this forum. This is really not the place to vent your crazy political theories.
tigerBL00D··on Starlink Maritime
$5K a month? The dream of affordable internet at sea will have to wait. Bummer. I expected a disruption from SpaceX.
tigerBL00D··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
The problem with Russia is not the law, but lack of willingness to cooperate.
tigerBL00D··on Blood pressure e-tattoo promises continuous, mobile monitoring
How long does the warranty last?
tigerBL00D··on Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees
Most of wealth is in stock, which also represents control. If you tax heavily that would lead to loss or control. That's not necessarily a good thing for anyone.

Besides, you can only buy a okay superyacht for 100M, definitely not the best /s

tigerBL00D··on The largest group of nesting fish ever found lives beneath Antarctic ice
This shows how vulnerable life is. One accidental or purposeful act that humans are perfectly capable of can do irreparable harm to this species and the ecosystem.
tigerBL00D··on How bad is my gas stove?
I wonder, would a gas dryer suffer from the same issues, or is it somehow better due to forced venting?
tigerBL00D··on FSB arrests REvil ransomware gang members
I don't understand why something like arresting criminals has to be immediately seen as part of some sinister scheme. What's wrong with "cleaning up the cyberspace" being exactly that?
tigerBL00D··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
Using mongodb for anything but pet projects is like drunk driving. It's fast and fun, but when you eventually crash and burn you get no sympathy. And people do get hurt.

I am joking of course :D

tigerBL00D··on A not so gentle intro to web3
This is how web3 succeeds at decentralizing moral responsibility?
tigerBL00D··on Colorado 'solar garden' is a farm under solar panels
> Yes, you could run a civilization entirely on solar if you had a robust storage, conversion and distribution system.

Just don't want to let it become a single point of failure. Earth's history is punctuated by periods of low sunlight at sea level.

tigerBL00D··on Brain implant translates paralyzed man's thoughts into text with 94% accuracy
LOL. I think the system actually interprets you wanting to move your hand as if you're writing, like tracing each letter. It's not listening to your thoughts and transcribing. Actual thoughts are very non linear, I think. Transcribe that and it would be sort of like a Trump speech I guess. Lol
tigerBL00D··on Wacom drawing tablets track the name of every application that you open
> Some applications, like web browsers, co-operate very well with proxies. They allow users to explicitly specify a proxy for them to to send their traffic through. However, other applications (including the Wacom tablet drivers) provide no such conveniences. Instead, they require some special treatment.

You may be able to tweak your /etc/hosts to direct traffic to a machine you control, just look out for certificate issues.

tigerBL00D··on Square to acquire Afterpay for $29B
Lack of regulation means that there is no penalty for trading on non-public (insider) information or for stock manipulation. Lack of regulation is what everyone wants, right? Except regulation is there to prevent all sorts of fraud that ultimately leaves someone's granny holding the bag. The said billionaires are not so dumb. They know what they can get away with and their close friends may know what they're going to tweet before they do it.
tigerBL00D··on Assange case: Key witness admits he lied
You're missing the point. There is no plural. There is only one editor in chief who makes final decisions and it's more of a management position. The higher up you are the more directly accountable you are for the bottom line. You don't get to that position by fighting for the truth. You get to that position by maintaining the tone that reliably brings in advertising revenue.
tigerBL00D··on Assange case: Key witness admits he lied
I'm not sure that journalists play too big a role. Journalists don't decide what gets printed or played on repeat on TV. Refusing to provide fodder to a propaganda machine (any major news organization) just creates a vacancy that can be easily filled, because it's capitalism and journalists too have kids, mortgages and college debt.
tigerBL00D··on Leak uncovers global abuse of cyber-surveillance weapon
How is this legal and why companies like NSO and their principals are not being prosecuted?
tigerBL00D··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Isn't part of the problem that the US/FDA trial and certification process is designed to be very expensive? And who benefits from a moat created by high cost of R&D if not big pharma? I seriously doubt that pharma lobby would be thrilled if costs of bringing new drugs to market suddenly fell by several orders of magnitude, so it's not going to happen.
tigerBL00D··on Show HN: Unlimited, free intraday stock data API
Speaking from a quant perspective - the tagline grabbed my attention, but inside it is currently a half-baked mixture of poorly documented ideas. Specifically: the charts are horrible, the API does not provide data that is useful/usable unless what you want to do it to draw some very unsophisticated charts, and there is no documentation to even hint at that the author has a handle on complexities involved in providing even just historical price data for starters (ever heard of split and dividend adjustments?). I'm not really sure who this product is for when we have Yahoo finance etc.

P.S. I did immediately wonder if I got lured into signing up just to be offered to install some kind of styvcoin mining software. No thanks.

tigerBL00D··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database
Okay, good point, and that's exactly why you isolate your networks. You don't want to be one configuration option from being wide open.
tigerBL00D··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database
I feel sorry for the victim, but it sounds like this whole setup is more or less careless. If your Docker configuration is the only thing that's stopping your database from being exposed - you should reconsider your approach to network and database security. At the very least there should be firewall protection at host level. Further is a standard procedure to put unsecure endpoints in a private VPC that's not accessible from the internet (and a bastion for administration). Relying solely on docker for something as important is bad even if you configure it correctly - it's still a single layer of software protecting you and it may have vulnerabilities of its own.
tigerBL00D··on Technology Saves the World
In reality humans have a complicated relationship with technology. As much as it promises to save the world, technology is also what is increasingly over the last couple centuries threatening to destroy the world and our species. So technology may be saving the world, but largely from itself.
tigerBL00D··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
Are those the right categories? Utilities are built (at least partially) and maintained using taxpayer money. Google acquired dominance by collecting user data. In both cases users, as a class, get access to essential services that what wouldn't have been possible without their contributions.
tigerBL00D··on How the government set up a fake bank to launder drug money (2012)
To think that this money didn't end up financing insurgency is to be naive.
tigerBL00D··on “It's a truck full of traffic lights”
Very interesting. There must be some kind of assumption in models that traffic lights are stationary objects which results in them falling off the back of the truck.
tigerBL00D··on DoD Budget Appears to Cut Cyber Offense, Beef Up Defenses
Let me put it this way. You're not likely to cut your R&D budget when your competition is increasing it.
tigerBL00D··on DoD Budget Appears to Cut Cyber Offense, Beef Up Defenses
I am sure that spending multiples of $100M on cyber offense is providing ample justification to state-sponsored adversaries of all kinds to stage attacks of their own. Especially combined with Snowden-type revelations which makes the US look like an evil monopoly conspiring to aggressively exploit its dominance to eliminate all competition.
tigerBL00D··on Surviving an In-Flight Anomaly: What Happened on Ingenuity’s Sixth Flight
"Approximately 54 seconds into the flight, a glitch occurred in the pipeline of images being delivered by the navigation camera. This glitch caused a single image to be lost, but more importantly, it resulted in all later navigation images being delivered with inaccurate timestamps."
