tibbon··on Noncompete clauses: Companies say they need them, research shows that’s not true
Surely some CEO here, or someone who has worked in HR can illuminate us on how they believe this is true.

I once caught a company I worked for in the lie about this. I was advocating for a new employee who didn't want to sign the no-compete clause. They say they needed it. I asked what problems they had in California, and how it was impacting their business - they replied there were no problems. So I was like, "Ok, so if it isn't impacting you in CA, why do you think it will impact elsewhere?"

In the end, they did hire that person, and did not make them sign the non-compete.

tibbon··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Time to test if the regulation after Bear Sterns was sufficient. Surely it was enough to prevent issues as promised
tibbon··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
They’ll have chatGPT write it
tibbon··on Show HN: NESFab – Programming language for making NES games
Not to increase your scope, but have you considered making it work across other 6502 systems?
tibbon··on The lost art of lacing cable (2018)
Everything is running to a large patchbay that helps with this, but your concern is entirely valid
tibbon··on The lost art of lacing cable (2018)
This is really helpful to me right now. I’m finishing up a large home recording studio and I’m looking for better ways than Velcro and zip ties to help dress wiring
tibbon··on Moving my PC into my rack in a 2U case
I'm in a 140 year old victorian. Getting cables through these walls is interesting
tibbon··on Show HN: IngestAI – NoCode ChatGPT-bot creator from your knowledge base in Slack
I love the idea, but no thanks. I'd prefer to keep a version of this running in my own cluster, without data privacy woes.
tibbon··on Moving my PC into my rack in a 2U case
My gaming PC lives in a rack in my basement now in a 4u case. There is a 150ft optical hdmi cable running to the third floor, and a usb over cat6 cable returning control signals. I like how it is entirely silent to me, and does not warm my room
tibbon··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
It doesn't appear that any of the big ones are completely reversing their hiring sprees from the past 3 years; rather they are re-adjusting in realizing that can't hit their profit targets at this rate, and that many of their ambitious projects aren't panning out.

Many of these companies ballooned their hiring during covid, increasing at 20%-40% a year (or more!)

tibbon··on Magic Sand: augmented reality sandbox/playground
I recall seeing a demo of a similar setup at Burning Man about 5-6 years ago. Same people?
tibbon··on Ask HN: Which testing framework is the most fluent and pleasant to use?
It is the best I've used. Other frameworks (and languages) make testing a pain in comparison, particularly with mocks.
tibbon··on Ask HN: How to ensure your water is safe to drink?
Additionally, not all homes have back flow preventers. Yes, in theory they should - but the reality is that there's a reasonable chance that your street has at least one home without one. If they have lead pipes, then there could be at least some levels of lead in your water too.
tibbon··on The Real Book
Oddly enough, I went to Berklee in the early 2000's and I never thought much about the history or origination of these!
tibbon··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
I made a lot of connections when I was younger with people a few years older than me that really helped lift me up. I gained a lot of logical skills from needing to read about how cards interacted and apply that to judging small tournaments. I'm guessing a lot of people used it as a tool to be social when they didn't otherwise know how.

That all by itself seems worthwhile to me.

tibbon··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
I hear this all the time. Perhaps demand follows an 80/20% rule because my experience doesn't align with this.

I'm a man, 40 years, polyamorous, yet I have zero problems finding people to date. On average, I have more partners than the women I often date. I agree that Tinder and such are highly skewed, but it doesn't make it useful for any gender. In-person (events, social groups, etc), I find there are a large number of people who actively want to date me and spend time with me.

I don't see a clear gender divide in dating opportunities in my personal experience. I haven't been able to figure out what is unique about my experience vs the majority of men. I am not a "10" in any way; I just have a lot of hobbies.

tibbon··on Apple Reality Pro: Eye and Hand Tracking, App Store, 3D iOS-Like Interface
I remember almost buying a Google Glass. But it seemed too early, and not useful enough. Hopefully this is different, but I truly have a hard time wanting to part with this much money for something that feels like it will likely collect dust in a few years- or worse yet in Apple fashion, ask that I buy another generation for yet more for continued support if it does work out
tibbon··on GitHub Sponsors will stop supporting PayPal
I've seen that PayPal's support, APIs, documentation, etc., is substandard. Downtime events are frequent. Getting in touch with a human is impossible.
tibbon··on Ask HN: How do ADHD people cope on here?
I've on and off had problems with similar since early Slashdot years. Very ADHD.

A few years ago I realized I have more important things to do. I log on here when I can, but i'm fine with missing things.

Sure; there's so much I'll never come back to, but whatever. That's just life. I look for recurring patterns, not individual items.

tibbon··on Roger Linn on Swing, Groove and the Magic of the MPC's Timing (2013)
Is there anything that could in theory happen to allow the firmware to be open source, so to allow the community to continue with it? I figure in some time period, people will figure out many aspects (as they've done with the Machinedrum, and now have community driven firmwares).

(I have a Tempest, and I'm decent software dev. Wouldn't mind helping maintain a project around it)

tibbon··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
I really just use my machine 95% as a tape machine with few plugins or edits. So as long as I can get 64 tracks of in/out reliably with 128-sample buffers (or lower) then I'm set. I just haven't tried that out in my new studio yet, as it's under construction. If I can do this, then I'll skip the upgrade for now.
tibbon··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
I'm likely going to order one of their Minis with the top CPU option and 32gb ram for audio production here. I've got an 2018 i7 model which is fine, but this one should set me for a _long_ time.
tibbon··on The Pretty Good House
A good architect will be this third party and hold the GC's feet to the fire. The GC might not care about you and repeat business, but they will likely care a lot more about keeping a good architect & firm happier with a decent reputation. Plus, the architect is used to helping this process.
tibbon··on We need a lot more electricians
I've mostly used them on new circuits, but have put them on a few of my older circuits too. For my small sample size, I've yet to have one nuisance trip.
tibbon··on We need a lot more electricians
You need a AFCI in most places now. In the 2020 edition of the NEC®, Section 210.12 requires that for dwelling units, all 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets or devices installed in dwelling unit kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas, or similar rooms or areas shall be protected by AFCIs.

The latest National Electrical Code requires both AFCI and GFCI protection only in kitchens and laundry rooms, but if you're already doing AFCI, why not do it all everywhere as it is clearly to be required at some point

Main downside is they are expensive. I've recently installed a new 24-slot subpanel and I'm using them everywhere required. At $50 a pop, that's a quick $1200.

tibbon··on Identity thieves bypassed Experian security to view credit reports
Why isn't there more regulation on these? It seems something that 99.9% of voters would want to get behind. These credit report agencies horde data and then misuse it so frequently. It feels like there needs to be some accountability for misuse of data like this and breaches, especially when there's essentially no way to opt out and still function in society.
tibbon··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
When I bought my house I went deep into battery powered tools (Ryobi, but I think its all similar). I have 2-3 drills and 2 impact drivers. It is really nice to not need to change bits often, and with my ADHD having a few sitting around in the room where I'm actively doing heavier work is nice too. Lots of batteries, handful of other tools from them.

Having multiple of some seemed very silly, but it really is so useful!

tibbon··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
140 year old victorian home. I managed to run a new 12 gauge circuit to my second floor bathroom myself to get an outlet in the right place. Took me a few hours to puzzle through how to get the line up there without breaking open a wall, but I managed it in the end.

Its going to be a _little_ tricky to get lines to the other bathrooms, but I'll figure it out when the time comes.

tibbon··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Same. I want to put them on all of mine. Having a warmed seat is so nice in the winter!
tibbon··on Ask HN: What $500-2500 product improved your 2022
