tiatia123··on Relation between alcohol consumption in midlife and dementia in late life
Consider: "drinking alcohol (ethanol) is a Group 1 carcinogen.[1] There is no level of alcohol consumption that is safe." Bullshit!

tiatia123··on Relation between alcohol consumption in midlife and dementia in late life
I post it again:

The Truth We Won’t Admit: Drinking Is Healthy

https://psmag.com/social-justice/truth-wont-admit-drinking-h...

Super smart guy by the way.

I am not sure why this gets downvoted. You may look up who this guy actually is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanton_Peele

tiatia123··on MoviePass couldn’t afford to pay for movie tickets on Thursday
Theaters make their money on drinks and food, no?

What bothered me in the US is that I can't buy a beer in the cinema. I always had to bring my own :-)

tiatia123··on Why some PhDs are quitting academia for unconventional jobs
It is an extraordinary risky decision to do a PhD (maybe except in CS). I have seen the best ones fail career-wise.

Excellent blog post about it: https://blogs.harvard.edu/philg/2018/06/14/losing-the-nobel-...

Quote:

"My take-away from the careers aspect of the book is that if you (1) love competition, (2) have a huge appetite for risk, (3) don’t mind working long hours for a minimum of 27 years until getting that first grant, and (4) are mostly indifferent to money, pursuing a physics PhD and an academic job might be a reasonable plan. You’ll get to work with a lot of smart people, for sure, but, as the book notes, quite of few of them may be planning to stab you in the back when it comes time to assign credit for a Nobel-worthy discovery. It is not like most other fields of human endeavor where there is room for everyone to excel in his or her own way."

tiatia123··on Our experience launching a paid, proprietary product on Linux
Well, I would be more than happy to buy a decent Linux IMAP client.

1. I never heard about your product 2. Can I use it as a regular IMAP client?

I am waiting for a linux version of this:

tiatia123··on A new digital divide: Young people who can’t use keyboards
Yes.
tiatia123··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
It is a question of time until we have Gene doping. It might be happening already.
tiatia123··on Where can I rent a cheap small startup place in the US?
Yes, but it must be a little bit office like.

I know NYC but this seems to be too pricey.

tiatia123··on Where can I rent a cheap small startup place in the US?
Why not rely on crowd intelligence?

I can't google every state. Many of the "incubators" are just real estate businesses, they don't offer cheap or subsidized rent. Ycombinator is not an option.

tiatia123··on 55% of the US National Debt Is the Result of Repaying Debt with More Debt
"Debt Is the Result of Repaying Debt with More Debt"

Actually, you can pay debt only with more debt. This is fundamental to capitalism and reason for it's dynamic and future downfall.

"In order to pay back debt with interest, it is necessary to have economic growth, and financial growth and growth in fossil fuel use are very closely tied." https://ourfiniteworld.com/2011/02/21/there-is-no-steady-sta...

tiatia123··on eBay Is Conducting a 'Mass Layoff' in the Bay Area
Not sure I want to have shares in ebay.

Have you heard about OpenBazar?

Besides this: They had paypal. Lost They had Skype. Lost.

They could have build the first social network on skype. Nothing. They have skype on the phone. They could have been the major western payment processor. The Alipay or Wechat of the West. Nothing.

It looks to me like a long series of lost opportunities. A one trick pony, a fly that is looking for a windshield.

tiatia123··on European Commission fines Google €4.34B in Android antitrust case
What country is this?
tiatia123··on Ask HN: How to disclose something without disclosing it?
No, you don't know it. It is not like health insurance. You pay and submit the bill. They guy take over the negotiations. One objective is to get you back alive. The other objective is to pay as little as possible. The third objective is to make the whole process a pain in the butt that this guy will never try this again. Trust me. You have no idea what you are talking about. I know former military guys who work in this field. Keep downvoting me.
tiatia123··on Ask HN: How to disclose something without disclosing it?
"The reason they can't tell you is that you may then 'kidnap' yourself to collect on it."

I don't think you know how this insurance works.

tiatia123··on Why Use OpenStreetMap Instead of Google Maps?
You obviously did not read the previous post or you don't know what HERE maps are.
tiatia123··on Ask HN: Favorite note-taking software?

tiatia123··on Amazon’s share of the US e-commerce market is now 49%
What do you need it for?

If money if not an issue, buy Swissbit S-45 cards from Mouser.

tiatia123··on How Postcards Solved the Problem of Disappearing Rice
Yeah. Like the people who hire ships and basically offer a taxi service from Europe to Africa. The migrants sit on tiny boats, let the boats drift a few miles into the sea, send an emergency signal, get picked up and instead of getting brought back 5 miles to Africa, they are shipped to Europe. Then, let other people pay for health care, food, shelter, pocket money.
tiatia123··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
I have to assume that everybody who downvoted this post has never ever made a real cave tour. A tour that involves hours of climbing up and down, diving and walking over tons of bat shit. Submarine my ass.
tiatia123··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
And Musk hat to brag about building a submarine. Don't want to call him an idiot, but as a start explore the caves of Sagada in the Philippines. Then talk about escaping in such a flooded cave with a tiny submarine. https://wikitravel.org/en/Sagada

Diving in caves is dangerous as f.. and requires a special training. Not sure that cave diving is part of a Navy Seal training. I read the dive out of the cave takes five hours. Hands of to the SEALS and kids for pulling it off.

tiatia123··on China VC has overtaken Silicon Valley, but do aggregates tell the whole story?
I once had a business partner from Nigeria and somehow I have a feeling where the money is coming from.

Lesson learned: Sometimes a little bit Racism is healthy. No kidding!

tiatia123··on Uganda Bans VPNs to Prevent Users from Dodging Its New Social Media Tax
Not sure why this gets downvoted. Good luck trying OpenVPN over 80 or 443 in China.

If you want to build your own, use at least VPN that was developed in Japan. (Google)

tiatia123··on Uganda Bans VPNs to Prevent Users from Dodging Its New Social Media Tax
Some VPNs go through extraordinary length for VPN over HTTP(S). It is not so trivial. Assuming that Uganda is likely buying blocking equipment from China.
tiatia123··on In Q2 2018, Global VC Scales Tipped In Favor Of Chinese Startups Over American
"Curious: were you born in China and still eligible for the lottery?" I was born in Western Europe. I am not Assian.

"I thought Nanotech was a much coveted field to be in" Me too, but as mentioned before, Ideas are like hemorrhoids. This was mine.

Not sure why. Wrong time. Wrong coast. Bad luck. I had an interview at Agilent. They had 500 applicants. You needed to have a PhD or MBA or both. I was among the last three candidates and they congratulated me, "you got the job". Then they axed the job. There was just a curse on me. Really don't want to think back about that time. Started over in China with nothing. Was basically an illegal immigrant there.

tiatia123··on China VC has overtaken Silicon Valley, but do aggregates tell the whole story?
Not surprised. Scamming is HUGE business.

By the way, we are looking for a money receiver. Please inquire!

tiatia123··on In Q2 2018, Global VC Scales Tipped In Favor Of Chinese Startups Over American
Nanotech I won the lottery while doing my PhD in the US. PhD was really a good time but I should basically have left immediately after I finished. Total waste of time afterwards.

What is a green card worth without a job?

I had a green card but could not get a job in the US.

Cheers from China. They actually DO need people here.

tiatia123··on Forced Labor in Malaysia's Electronics Industry
> What does that contribute? That could apply to your idea too, or mine.

It is intellectual over-engineering of cultures. It looks tremendously good on paper.

> This is really an incredibly broad stereotype to paint on hundreds of millions of individuals. No, it really isn't since Europe is not flooded with Chinese, Americans or Australians but with people with a very low skill set, very different attitude towards violence and women, from tribal societies and with a religion they feel is far superior.

> And who is the parent to judge others and take away their rights? I am not judging them. I don't even say that their culture is inferior. If an industrialized society breaks down (think Mad Max if you want) they are in a far superior position. The question is: If women should have no rights, if you have the best religion, if you want to bury gay people alive, why not stay in your home country?

By the way, I am just visiting Romania. Romania is willing to take refuges but refuges are not willing to take Romania. Why? No living on welfare...
