thuuuomas··on Teenage Engineering OP-1: The micro synth with massive impact
“Security thru obscurity” - the TAM of boutique, specialist gear is small enough to deter most profit-motivated copycats.

Waiting on the Behringer OP-B tho I guess :)

thuuuomas··on Is AI killing the stock photo industry? A data perspective
Frame this - iconic. How many people would you estimate are deserving of your judgement? “Billions”?
thuuuomas··on I’m in Wyoming to celebrate the next nuclear breakthrough
It sounds like you’re expecting ideal operating conditions indefinitely?
thuuuomas··on Angular v16
Agreed. Stewardship of the angular ecosystem is lacking. Versioning across first-party @angular packages isn’t consistent. Some @angular packages are in permanent beta for unknown reasons. Anything besides the latest release is abandonware.
thuuuomas··on Why Tocqueville Matters
Did you chime in to tell us you’ve yet to finish it? That’s pretty funny too
thuuuomas··on Beware of AI pseudoscience and snake oil
We can’t be critical of the datasets used for testing if we don’t know what’s in them.

The same applies to training data - it should be disclosed.

thuuuomas··on Everything Is Interpolated: Music’s Nostalgia-Industrial Complex
What happens when there’s 100x the content, often indistinguishable from alike content, but demand remains the same?
thuuuomas··on Why Tocqueville Matters
It’s on Gutenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/815/pg815-images.html#l...
thuuuomas··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
Those dang irrational personal choices!

All models are wrong, but some keep your hopes closer

thuuuomas··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Centrism is a meta-heuristic concerned only with who said what. It’s no surprise that many people find centrist beliefs superficial & uninformed.
thuuuomas··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
> I suspect a human touch is still needed

This is the motivated reasoning of a comfortable person.

AI will eat the Protagonist Jobs too, sooner rather than later.

thuuuomas··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
Human managers (who are good at their jobs) bring a little Bedside Manner, a modicum of compassion to Human Resource Allocation that will soon be seen as a luxury compared to low-cost, fully-automated Human Resource Monitoring & Reinforcement Systems
thuuuomas··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
You’re speculating. You have no experience with fiscal or monetary policy. You’re a glorified salesman!
thuuuomas··on Software 2.0 (2017)
“we should obviate things I find distasteful, but my livelihood must be preserved”
thuuuomas··on John Carmack on Functional Programming in C++ (2018)
> absolute purity doesn't leave a route for daily coders writing regular programs to do their jobs

This speaks to the muscle memory of daily coders way more than to the details of FP/OO.

You could easily make the same argument about “absolute encapsulation”.

thuuuomas··on The maze is in the mouse: what ails Google
The opera singer shatters the wine glass with a humming
thuuuomas··on ChatGPT: The Slickest Con Artist of All Time
“Sycophantic” to whom?
thuuuomas··on Diff Models – A New Way to Edit Code
A dark, desert highway, huh? Cool wind in yr hair? :)))
thuuuomas··on Diff Models – A New Way to Edit Code
Do you truly believe yr StableDiffusion Americana is “not like what anyone else is making”? You’ve got some knots to untangle :)
thuuuomas··on Ask HN: What do you think when companies ask for gritty people?
Sure, but how are you less cynical than others here?
thuuuomas··on Some Lisp books (2012)
The author on occasion also publishes a journal about " the Lisp family of programming languages and little-languages in general", which is worth a look.

thuuuomas··on Norway votes to decriminalise drugs and offer treatment instead of jail time
But where will Norway source their compulsory, unpaid labor if not from private prisons clogged with drug war causalities?
thuuuomas··on W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns
Netflix is money, but the real DRM atrocities will surface in the ed-tech long tail.
thuuuomas··on Why public libraries need to support open source
Computers are the tools of modern librarianship.
thuuuomas··on Finance is Not the Economy
The US is full of people who refer to "this country" online. :D
thuuuomas··on Show HN: Natural Language Generation, Emoji-To-English Translator
For fun, try decoding sequences of the "police" emoji of varying length. :D

thuuuomas··on Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects
Denying something out of dogma is basically the definition of virtue.
thuuuomas··on Paul Graham Is Still Asking to Be Eaten
This is a language problem: people with emotions hear "value" & recognize a (for lack of a better term) moral component to the implied judgement, where finance people are happy to confuse "value" with "wealth" or "profit" or "money" or "power" or "IGMFU". This confusion allows economic arguments to fall back on economic arguments when confronted with moral opposition & it's worked for centuries.
thuuuomas··on When will librarians start to throw offline literature away?
IANAL, but it's worth noting that libraries have particular usage rights regarding printed materials that they give up entirely when moving to an ebook licensing scheme.

thuuuomas··on Massachusetts’s Rejection of Common Core Test Signals Shift in U.S
Regarding [0], The reference to `==` vs `===` in javascript seems like mad trolling.
