throwyawayyyy··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
I'm surprised. I only know the US and the UK, but in the UK it can go down as far as a 5% deposit. Honestly US deposit requirements seem high.
throwyawayyyy··on The $440M software error at Knight Capital (2019)
Random, but I interviewed at Knight Capital for a software engineering position a few weeks before this all went down. I was in London, so the interview was done over the phone. Picture me in the evening, handwriting C to solve some problem (the fog of time too thick to remember what that problem was), then reading out what I'd written, semicolons and all, to the interviewer. Because of course there was no shared doc. I did very badly. But then, so did they.
throwyawayyyy··on Benedict Arnold's body lies in the wall of a British kindergarten
Benedict Cumberbatch :)
throwyawayyyy··on The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers
That was my feeling. I got to the end of the article and thought -- was that it? Nothing is grubbier than the pieces about serial killers, and this isn't even that: it's a piece about someone who writes pieces about serial killers. Who is a bit of a fantasist, so what? Not even entirely a fantasist! He'd inflated the number of serial killers he's interviewed. The fewer the serial killers who are talked to, the fewer who have attention given to them, the better, frankly...
throwyawayyyy··on Bitcoin Was Made for This Moment. So Why Isn’t It Booming?
But... isn't that the point? Bitcoin was designed to evade such controls. And it can't.
throwyawayyyy··on Bruegel the Elder’s “Big Fish Eat Little Fish” (1556)
The Vermin only teaze and pinch / Their Foes superior by an Inch. / So, Nat'ralists observe, a Flea / Hath smaller Fleas that on him prey, / And these have smaller yet to bite 'em, / And so proceed ad infinitum: / Thus ev'ry Poet, in his Kind / Is bit by him that comes behind

- Jonathan Swift :)

throwyawayyyy··on Lead exposure in last century shrunk IQ scores of half of Americans: study
Seems a reasonable assumption that lowering IQ is a decent proxy for other damage lead does to the brain, right? It would be weird if it just damaged the bits associated with doing well on IQ tests, and left the rest alone.

E.g. it happens that IQ is something we measure, and EQ much less so. That lead leads to measurable reductions in IQ is strong evidence that it damages EQ too. (As its association with crime would suggest.)

throwyawayyyy··on [dead]
"Russia responded to this regime change by helping Crimea secede" ...is how the annexation of Crimea is described.
throwyawayyyy··on The rising human cost of sports betting
I moved from the UK quite a number of years ago, and whenever I return to my home town, there are steadily more shops like this -- often multiple agencies on the same street. More affluent areas get coffee shops and estate agents. Less affluent: betting shops, and lots of them.
throwyawayyyy··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
The advice here seems generally pretty good, so I'll suggest a different angle. Have you considered leaning into your work? Your career as a developer is going well, why not see how far you can take it? As you point out, your peers are spending time raising families etc, that's time not spent on their careers. There's an often unstated assumption that only one's life outside of work counts when it comes to personal happiness. Does that have to be true? What if your ideal work/life balance is just work?
