This is the problem.
throwuwu··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
Probably true but if you have several popular short stories done in a certain style or genre then it’s a good bet that a novel in the same will be more popular. They’re good practice too, the article mentions that a lot of the respondents have only published a single book.
throwuwu··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
Maybe they should be? I suggested short stories as a way to practice and test the waters since they would work well with social media and aggregator sites, people are willing to read a short story they find on reddit or hn but much less likely to read a whole book. Keeping your “demos” short also requires less commitment and takes less time so you can do more of them. The idea isn’t to earn money from short stories but to do analytics on them in order to decide which to turn into a novel.

Tangential, but do any authors apply the same techniques promoted by software developers for honing their craft? e.g. instead of trying to write the next great American novel you focus on writing a lot of short stories and then analyze them for market fit and expand on the ones that have legs?
throwuwu··on LLMs and Programming in the first days of 2024
Nobody’s going to make you :)

Write code for the wise cracking door AI instead.

throwuwu··on LLMs and Programming in the first days of 2024
I wouldn’t worry too much about the demand for programmers. Jevon’s paradox has played out enough times that I’m sure as the cost of code goes to zero the demand will continue to increase. Look forward to the day that your toilet paper comes with an API.

Bad metaphor and worse that you use it to inform your conclusion. If you must have one then use training wheels, experts don’t need training wheels beginners do, simple as that. Though the utility of LLMs goes much further as the author points out, it can often make the boring or tedious parts easier so you can add assistive peddling to the metaphor. To carry it to the end, once you have four wheels and a motor it’s not long before someone invents the car.
throwuwu··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
What’s the FPS of human eyesight? How long did Timmy spend looking at Mario, more generally other cartoons and even more generally human forms? Do the math and you’ll find he’s got a pretty big training set as well, maybe not quite the same size but nothing to sneeze at.
throwuwu··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
Copyright is fucked. Even if Open AI somehow loses this and has to delete GPT4 and their training data, the generative AI cat is so far out of the bag that it’s gone on to live a full life and have many grandkittens. It’s already easy to install and run generative models and it’s just going to get easier and the models will keep getting better. These lawsuits are futile and won’t matter in 2 years or less.

throwuwu··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
The Tolkien estate should get busy suing all the fantasy writers, comic artists, game developers and board and card game companies. Lots of cash there.

throwuwu··on Possible to detect an industrial civilization in geological record? (2018)
Unlikely. You underestimate the compounding effect of weathering, oxidation, and the movement of the earth itself.

There’s a hell of a lot more holes from prairie dogs than there are from oil wells.

Once it cracks and water reaches the rebar won’t it be gone in less than 200 years? Or at least reduced to a smear of gravel and iron?

Stone blocks will be quarried, weathered, ground by glaciers and then subducted beneath the crust. Small artifacts disappear even faster and are harder to find.

Those are the least likely artifacts to last

Read the paper. The fossil record is very incomplete, only a handful of species are known from it compared to the abundance of variations that have ever existed. We have evidence of mass extinctions far greater than that caused by humans but there were many smaller scale ones among the background noise of normal extinction.

Yes it’s much better now in all those areas, I think you’ll be surprised if your last experience was a few months ago. The difference in ability between 3.5 and 4 is significant.
throwuwu··on Oldest Fortresses in the World Discovered
Spears are easily parried and its really difficult to recover an attack posture afterwards since you need to quickly retreat the full length of the spear. Someone wielding a short one handed weapon has a major advantage because they can move in quickly, parry with their weapon or free hand and then make multiple strikes to an opponent who can only defend at that range and can’t attack. They’re only really effective in formation with a lot of other soldiers which is not a tactic you would expect from a group without military discipline.

Did you use gpt4? I asked it to give me some examples code for a dialog box with an input field and a button and it gave me this:

use slint::slint;

slint! { DialogBox := Window { width: 400px; height: 200px; title: "Input Dialog";

        VerticalBox {
            padding: 20px;
            spacing: 10px;

            TextInput {
                id: input_field;
                placeholder_text: "Enter text here";
            }

            Button {
                text: "Submit";
                clicked => {
                    // Handle the button click event
                    println!("Input: {}", input_field.text());
                }
            }
        }
    }
}

fn main() { DialogBox::new().run(); }

Considering they get most of their doomsday predictions from science fiction I’d say that would be a smart bet. Why get it second hand, just go right to the source.
throwuwu··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I have a hard time having sympathy for a platform that ruined my suggested videos feed and then proceeds to put two unskippable ads plus a skippable one at the start of videos plus more ads in the middle and end. When uBlock stopped working I actually stuck with chrome and thought I’d give ads a shot knowing that some of the money would go to creators but the ads literally got worse over the course of a few weeks so I’m happily going back to blocking now.
throwuwu··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
Sure and platforms _say_ they will give you an ad free experience if you pay them a monthly fee but they always wind up adding ads once they’ve captured their audience.
