throwup··on Age that kids acquire mobile phones not linked to well-being: study
The FBI would rather more children get hurt than risk the public learning any more details of their spying programs. https://www.theregister.com/2017/01/06/fbi_lets_people_off_t...

Serious question: how do you pronounce "Latinxs"?
throwup··on Canada geese beat humans in longstanding territory battle: study
You can meet all kinds of people on HN, but I never thought I would meet a Canadian goose
throwup··on Crypto’s Final Price Could Be Zero
You've changed the subject again--I didn't mention inflation. Are you a bot or are you just parroting random talking points without reading?

Since you brought it up, YoY returns are not really relevant for a long-term investor. If you're speculating/gambling on short-term volatility, then USD/VTSAX/BTC have done poorly--but I'm not much of a speculator. I'm very happy with my 10-year returns.

As long as you keep wildly changing the subject (this applies to your next reply as well), I'll assume you have no counterpoints and agree with everything I say. I'm glad we can agree!

throwup··on Crypto’s Final Price Could Be Zero
I'm not sure why you're trying to change the subject to money printing. But thanks for proving my point. You're right that dogecoins have value (for better or worse) and that value definitely doesn't come from any government.
throwup··on Crypto’s Final Price Could Be Zero
It's a myth that taxes are what give currency value. Plenty of currencies needed to pay taxes throughout history have hyperinflated into nothing.
throwup··on Ask HN: Do older devs buy lighter notebooks to reduce pain while carrying them?
Interesting, I'll have to read more. From your description it sounds like the problem could be mostly mitigated if you put your glasses on only after sitting down at your desk, and remove them before standing up.
throwup··on Ask HN: Do older devs buy lighter notebooks to reduce pain while carrying them?
> you are of course reluctant about "upgrading" your glasses because you know they only make it worse

Is that actually true? I always assumed my lenses would harden at a more-or-less constant rate no matter what I do. I wouldn't think wearing glasses could the speed up or slow down the process.

throwup··on Ask HN: Do older devs buy lighter notebooks to reduce pain while carrying them?
You can sell accounts with high karma, but your hourly takehome would be much less than minimum wage. Then again, I can't argue about Kubernetes at Burger King, so working for HN has its perks too

My favorite is Ask HN: Did you know you can submit polls?
throwup··on Stable Diffusion 2.0 and the Importance of Negative Prompts for Good Results
That's actually hilarious. I wonder if the same trick works for Copilot.

No? A hardware security audit is completely different from a company financial audit. Use your head.
throwup··on How thick is a three-sided coin?
Quantum effects, of course!
throwup··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
Very cool, thanks for submitting this. I use Buster[1] but I've always been annoyed it doesn't support hCaptcha (used by Cloudflare). I'm excited to try this out!

throwup··on The entire crypto ecosystem is a ponzi
As a bitcoin holder, I have to agree. Much if not all of the crypto ecosystem is a ponzi.

If your hardware wallet dies it should be merely an inconvenience, since your seed phrase can be restored to another device. Since it's an open standard, it's even portable between device manufacturers in case one goes out of business.

Your second concern is valid - choose a device that's been audited.

> tear it in half (6 words each)

This isn't a good idea; every word an attacker knows makes the remaining words exponentially easier to brute force. if you're going to split your key into pieces, you should use something like https://linux.die.net/man/1/ssss

If you have a better idea what it's worth than the market does, you should be out there making money through arbitrage instead of making snarky comments on the internet

Not everyone is cut out to be their own bank. Many people out there have the tech skills to use a hardware wallet and back up 24 words, but also many don't. Anyone in the second group who wants exposure should probably not use an exchange and instead hold out for an ETF (despite what the TV commercials say)
throwup··on Show HN: Using stylometry to find HN users with alternate accounts
I make new accounts every so often and the accounts of mine that it found have a score of around 0.3. I'm not actively trying to defeat stylometry but it's possible I just have a particularly unremarkable writing style.
throwup··on Ask HN: Why are slides used in talks instead of document scrolling?
If I'm listening to a speaker, I'm there to learn. If I knew everything already, I wouldn't be wasting my time. So my intelligence is not insulted if the speaker assumes I don't know things.
throwup··on WhatsApp data leak: 500M user records for sale
I might be missing something here. Why would HN care any differently about WhatsApp vs Telegram?
throwup··on FTX owned an $11.5M stake in a tiny rural bank in Washington state
> Why buy a bank?

Applying for a banking license is time-consuming. Buying a local bank is a comparatively quick way to end-run around that process. In and of itself it's not a sign of anything shady - buying a bank is a pretty common part of the business plan for fintech startups that don't want to sit around for years waiting for government approval.

throwup··on Choosing Nim out of a crowded market for systems programming languages
It looks like gintro is a GTK binding - the Rust equivalent would be gtk-rs. https://www.gtk.org/docs/language-bindings/rust/

I'm curious whether you tried gtk-rs and if so what problems did you have?

throwup··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
I don't think the set of laws should be growing boundlessly year after year. Another idea is to adapt the house cleaning rule: to pass a new law, you must first get rid of an old law.
