throwthere··on White House deletes tweet after Twitter adds 'context' note
Hard to discuss this without getting political and violating all sorts of decorum but, I guess, the system worked here?

The original White House tweet:

  > “Seniors are getting the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years through President Biden’s leadership
The reality: Inflation triggered an automatic increase in social security benefits because of a 1972 law that indexes social security checks to cost of living.

I guess it's odd claiming you did good thing X, when in reality it was bad thing Y that automatically caused good thing X. But even that's not right, because in inflation-adjusted terms, good thing X actually wasn't good at all, it was just neutral.

throwthere··on Meta Myths
The $250 billion spend is "projected" over 10 years by the commentator.

Would META spend $25 billion/year indefinitely without earning a profit? I don't know but other scenarios seem plausible too.

throwthere··on Meta Myths
"Daily Active Users (DAUs). We define a daily active user as a registered and logged-in Facebook user who visited Facebook through our website or a mobile device, or used our Messenger application (and is also a registered Facebook user), on a given day. We view DAUs, and DAUs as a percentage of MAUs, as measures of user engagement on Facebook."

So, no.

throwthere··on Cloudflare CDN Partial Outage
Is this related to switching the firmware on the Minitel 2?
throwthere··on CSS Dig
I read through this a few times to see what it does. It helps find inconsistencies in your webpage design. It does that by reporting the frequency of properties and the frequency of property values in your CSS. You then evaluate that report for potential problems. For instance, shades of blue that are meant to be the same but slightly off. Or font-sizes that are 14px somewhere and 16px somewhere else.
throwthere··on A global house-price slump is coming?
Could be wrong but the Economist doesn't usually make predictions like this? This article doesn't have the same depth they usually write to. The reasoning behind their predicted price slump is that interst rates are going higher, making homes less affordable. But I think they stop there without looking at any other factors. Such as, the tempering effect of rising commodity and labor costs of new builds. The other half of the article is about knock-on effects of higher interest rates and the predicted price slump.

I guess I'm not saying their predictions will or will not come true, just that they don't support them.

throwthere··on CloudFront vs. Cloudflare, and how to reduce response times for both (2021)
The conclusion is for an origin server halfway across the world from your users, CloudFront with Origin Shield is basically equivalent to CloudFlare with Argo (latency).

The other takeaway is AWS documentation is kind of dodgy for some services. But basically everyone knows that already.

I've got a killer startup idea. "Post your problem with <tech company> to HN as a service."
throwthere··on How Fly.io and Tailscale Saved Notado
I love Fly.io and use it in production, but unless I'm missing something the author would have been better off just running their kubernetes cluster locally on a $6 VPS on digital ocean. That would also obviate the need for the procfile hack and tailscale.

> And the exception highlights an unhealthy reality of our wealth-obsessed, capitalist system: It often requires more intention and effort to give away money than to passively amass billions.

throwthere··on Feds seized $311M in Bitcoin, then hacker stole it back
80% of the way through the article you can read what actually happened. It's not that the Feds were incompetent and kept a "seized wallet" thinking only they had the private keys or something like that.

The wallets were simply protected by a passphrase and Larry couldn't be compelled to give the passphrase. The feds even told the judge they didn't have control of the funds and they could be moved to family/friends before it happened.

throwthere··on Ask HN: Should CTO own company shares?
I think you already know the answer because of the way you're asking the question. If you think you're underpaid on a salary basis and you don't have any large compensatory benefits like equity it just follows that you're underpaid.

Whether you make the difference up in equity, cash or something else is up to you but generally you could consider equity or some cash performance/bonus option.

throwthere··on Lambda the Ultimate is now running in a new, more stable environment
> LtU has experienced a long period of downtime recently. Its software infrastructure was outdated enough that it became difficult to maintain when problems arose. It has now been migrated to a brand new environment. It should be much more stable from now on.

So after 20 years of the old site they ended up with an unmaintainable ball of code. Not too bad in my opinion considering the evolution of the web during that time.
