It’s not clear what device you’re referring to in this context.

I really would have expected a much more reasoned approach from the likes of you Mr coldtea.

Historically I’ve found your comments informative, well thought out, and entertaining.

Here’s the Wikipedia article on the BOTs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Overseas_Territories

I’m willing to acknowledge those locales probably remain British territories, at least some of them, as an spect of projecting force, in addition the to historical quirks.

I probably don’t know enough.

And, ultimately, it would be nice if everyone got along and was generally content to stay in their lane.

Would the former British colonies be doing better or worse had they never been colonised? Quite possibly better. We’ll never know. At least some of the former colonies have failed spectacularly. That’s probably a good enough reason to never try any of that again.

I’m trying to steelman your arguments here Mr coldtea. Not only that, I have also raged against what happened in a similar manner from time to time.

It’s such a non-problem it’s not even worth mentioning.

The surface of the Earth is big. If you place 40,000 car sized objects on it in random places, you’d not be able to see then from low earth orbit.

That’s approximately how irrelevant they are in the sky.

> Third-party peripherals usually do not have this functionality.

What do you mean by ”usually” here?

I’m certain all the regular name brands, eg JBL Bose Sonos B&O etc enable the device itself to be configured with a user set name via their app. I’m certain because I’ve used them and done so.

When you rename a Bluetooth device from your phone, does that affect the name it broadcasts, or only the label applied in the list of Bluetooth devices in the phone?

I know for certain if you change the setting General > About > Name in an iPhone it changes what everyone sees when they look at their list of available Bluetooth devices.

I assume other Bluetooth devices are the same, no? Otherwise how do you distinguish which one of the three million Bluetooth devices within range is your friends Bluetooth speaker you’re trying to connect to?

Is there a compelling reason encoding needs to be done locally?

The point of encoding is to reduce downstream bandwidth for the viewer, and upstream bandwidth for the distribution network.

The content creator only needs to upload it once.

Ha! Indeed.

If all the ice melted it would raise the oceans by something like 230 feet, so modern Vienna would still be above water at 495 – 1778 ft elevation.

Although some estimates suggest Earth loses 20 - 30 cubic kilometres of water to space annually. Plus whatever water is bound up in mineralisation annually.

450 million cubic kilometres of water lost over a 15 million year period would lower ocean by something like … a bit?

The total volume of water on Earth is presently estimated to be around the 1.386 billion cubic kilometre mark.

The volume of a sphere increases to the cube of its radius … carry the 1 … nup, that’s to hard for me.

> You don't just get to kill the ones you don't like.

I mean ya kinda do.

That’s how it’s always worked, that’s how it still works, and that’s how it will probably continue to work probably indefinitely, or at least from time to time, more or less so during different periods over time.

The only issue is that there will invariably be consequences, but the leaders of nations are, to varying degrees, immune to a lot of that, themselves personally.

Having said that, some of my drive-by criticisms have lead to lengthy discussions, with or without my further participation. Probably mostly on older accounts I’ve abandoned.

Admittedly, this was not one of them.
