thrownawaysz··on How Singapore's government-run dating service works
I thought incels are white right wingers, first time I see this term in a non-white context. Southern Poverty Law Center is listing them as a hate group for example so by definition incels can’t be black.

Well for me not even the back gesture works, I just have to force close the app if I don't want to answer a survey lol

thrownawaysz··on MiMo v2.6
>Night 0.8x Usage, 00:00-08:00 -UTC+8

It's because offpeak electricity is cheaper?

Funnily it's perfect if you are in the Pacific Time Zone because you can use it daytime 9am to 5pm

thrownawaysz··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
>Another reason to use a car from 90's or 2000's

Talking as an eastern european: unless you live in a sunshine place (~Mediterranean) most of the 90s car already eaten by the rust + the salt used for defrosting on roads in the winter.

Also by my experience cars (except from SUVs) somehow never kept up with the road quality. Pot holes are a problem everywhere but you can see that certain brands for example japanese and korean ones never designed for deteriorating road quality (and I don't mean offroad) because... you know they just don't exist in the home market. So the tires, wheels, suspension are not as robust as they should be.

Sure _everything can be fixed_ but then your car becomes a hobby and might not everyone has an attitude and time for that.

thrownawaysz··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
Which is distinctly different both in purpose and technology than the previous versions. DLSS 5 is no longer about frame improvements. It’s about increasing graphical fidelity with active AI rendering.

DLSS 5 is trying to relight and retexture the scene using AI. DLSS 4 is just trying to take a lower quality image and upscale it using AI

thrownawaysz··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
I wonder when they will give up on the gaming market because that could take down several publishers and developers. I really don't think it's an if question but a when because it almost feels like an afterthought at this point (they removed the standalone gaming revenue report from the financial reports this summer). Also I don't think AMD and Intel is capable "to step in" to replace them.
thrownawaysz··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
I am not using any of these AI tools. I thought it was basically given that any single thing you write in these systems also used by the companies. On the other hand now I understand why there are so much projects about hosting AI systems locally.

thrownawaysz··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
This is what I meant by my last sentence.

Easy Anti cheat works as a software but doesn't work as an anti cheat system.

thrownawaysz··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
But they are not selling the game for Linux. Only for Windows. It's another story that it works because of Proton but technically they don't support the platform at all.

thrownawaysz··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
Valve can't even make their own anti cheat system work (VAC) on Windows let alone on Linux so not surprised that 3rd party publishers with 3rd party anti cheat system is giving up. I mean they technically work as a software but they don't fullfil their purpose, to block cheaters.
thrownawaysz··on Overcooked? Why robotic pizza makers are failing
I've had my fair share of shitty human made pizza so this kind of sounds like the autonomous taxi news cycle to me

Thousands of car crashes a day > not a news

A Waymo crashed > national news

Humans making shitty pizza is not a news. But robots burning a pizza is a news. It'll get better.

thrownawaysz··on Stop Killing Games: It's time to sue Sony, join us
I'm too small brain to understand the whole monopoly in my own business aspect. Because they are not arguing about game exclusivity, you can buy the same game most of the time on Xbox, Switch, PC (and if not that's an entirely different story) but the fact they want to buy on that platform (Playstation) but from a different store (not Sony). Can't wrap my head around that logic.

thrownawaysz··on Geekbench 7
Never really liked Geekbench. Synthetic benchmarks are easy to use and easy to understand but borderline useless. 1000 is better than 990 but it literally doesn't mean anything at all. Just an example: the 2017 Intel Xeon gets more points than an Apple M1 on multicore but everyone knows that they are incomparable. And no one should get a 2017 Intel Xeon because it's scoring higher yet that's the whole point of Geekbench, higher score is better.

Benchmarks like 7Zip compression/decompression, LAME encoding, Blackmagic RAW video encoding, Cinebench, x265 encoding, Blender encoding, Y Cruncher, and any of the built-in video game benchmarks make much more sense than Geekbench.

Some good benchmark options here https://hwbot.org/benchmarks

thrownawaysz··on Grok 4.5
Is there a reason the AI companies usually announce new products so close to each other. Like not just the same day but literally hours apart. GPT Live then an hour later Grok 4.5. As if they try to one up. I expect something new from Anhtropic as well today.

thrownawaysz··on Crypto in 2026: Oh, This Is the Bad Place
>Meet Mike. Mike is a college freshman who is exposed to crypto through social media. He downloads Coinbase, buys ten dollars of CumRocket because his friend group is in on it, watches the price move, and feels for the first time the dopamine rush of gambling on non-economic random walks. By his sophomore year he is onto harder drugs: 0DTE options on triple-leveraged single-stock ETFs he does not understand, traded on a gamified brokerage built to look like a video game. By twenty-two he has a Kalshi account, because betting on the outcome of a presidential primary or a reality television show winner has been reframed as participation in financial markets. By twenty-four he has hit rock bottom in the sportsbook, firing off ten-leg parlays on Tibetan ping-pong and third-division water polo at two in the morning because the games he has actually heard of no longer move fast enough to feel like anything. Mike believes he is investing. Mike is gambling. Mike is on the express train to a gambling addiction, and he is meaningfully poorer at every stop along the way.

tbh that reads a bit like the war on drugs propaganda we got in school back then. You don't want to try the devil's lettuce cause in 2 years you will be a homeless heroin addict in San Francisco, or worse!

The basic Seat Leon combi is currently 22.000€ on promotion. And that's a spacious family car. No EV car exist at that price point in that size with a range that most people would be comfortable with it.

Yes they will exist in the future but we are still a decade away from that at least.

thrownawaysz··on Six years perfecting maps on watchOS
The fact that there is no 1st party Apple made hiking and topography map on the Apple Watch is such a failure, not even on the most expensive “made for explorers” Watch Ultra. And things like gpx import is just a mere dream

mildy related but wasn't there an emulator (maybe not GB but NES or SNES?) which had a visual panel showing each CPU cycle step by step? afaik it was very slow but the 1000% accuracy was the goal not playability.
