throwmemoney··on 2/3 Ace (Amiga Computer Expo) 2000 Bill McEwan CEO of Amiga Explains AmigaDE [video]
Bill McEwan CEO of Amiga talks and demonstrates a hardware-agnostic operating system... AmigaDE (Amiga Anywhere) 21/9/2000 at ACE (Amiga Computer Expo) 2000 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. ~1,000 people attended. The software could be run on top of another OS or natively (without any other OS)… making it very flexible. The demo includes loading the same software onto 2 different OS's without recompilation (using the same floppy). The portability was achieved by writing a small virtual (under 120KB) virtual processor so that the software always sees the same hardware/processor. The virtual processor was easy to write. The small size of the virtual processor means it had no effect on the speed of the machine... and in fact the demo's Bill shows us run much better on the virtual processor than on Windows or Linux. It is unclear how much progress was made on AmigaDE after this.. but the explanation appears similar to the one Bill gave when demoing OS5 (the ACE demo actually has a lot more detail).

Some children can remember exact & verifiable details of their prior life they never could have come to know in this their current child life. These details can be objectively and independently confirmed. Remarkably & quite biologically enigmatic: Some of them have birth marks and birth defects at very same locations as the lethal injury causing their often abrupt and violent past life death. Eg. Born with 5 missing fingers after a prior life accident where they were cut off... Birthmarks at the exact location where they got gunshot wounds in their prior life, which could be confirmed from the autopsy report of their deceased individuality. Furthermore: Some can speak a language they never have learnt in this life (xenoglossy) corresponding to their past life language & nationality. They can in some cases remember names of siblings and other family members in their past life family who they never have met in this life...

throwmemoney··on AI Weiwei: Credit Suisse closed bank account over China
Leading Chinese dissident and artist Ai Weiwei has said he was told by Credit Suisse that his foundation's bank account in Switzerland would be closed over his "criminal record" in China.

The activist, noted for architecture, sculpture and documentaries, has never been convicted of a crime.

Mr Ai, who left China in 2015 and now lives in Portugal, made the comments on website Artnet.

Credit Suisse told the BBC it did not comment on client relationships.

The contemporary artist famously designed the Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but ran into serious problems after he spoke out against the Chinese government. This saw him spend 81 days in prison in 2011.

In the Artnet article Mr Ai wrote that in spring 2021 he had received a "surprising notice" from Credit Suisse.

"The bank informed me that it was terminating my account in Switzerland. They did this, they wrote, in accordance with a new policy of closing all accounts with people who have had criminal records. They believed (or pretended to believe?) that I had been convicted of a crime in China.

"Just a bit of homework could have shown them that I was never formally charged, let alone convicted of a crime."

throwmemoney··on Roblox raises $520M at $29.5B valuation
It is more to do with volumes of product, hardware is costly and the margins are thin if targeting less than 1000 per year. The problem is the product is not versatile to be adopted in a more general sense. The Engineering accomplishment of the company are great, but it does not have a broad enough market and hence reflected in the cost of the product. Similarly, you can compare that to technical books and why they cost so much as the expected sales volumes are not high enough unlike a fictional character book, prime example Harry Potter, it also became a big screen hit with fans.

throwmemoney··on Ask HN: Why isn’t finance a part of the core curriculum at schools?
It is true for Europe too. We are not taught about money in schools. Is is a conspiracy theory? The fractional reserve banking system is what shocked me when I came to watch the money as debt video on YouTube. The more loans you take out to by stuff to impress the people whom you don't like is a live an kicking in the world.
