throwawee··on Stop saying "just" (2019)
I think there's a missing distinction here between "Just do X!" and "Can we just do X?" The latter is a legitimate question and positive thing.

I was once asked if I could just do X and I said I'd have to spend hours ripping out Y and debugging its replacement. It'd slow down development and if there were any features from X they wanted, it'd be faster for me to write them for Y. Did they still want X? They didn't.

Another time I was prepared to build a robust, modular system with its own interface for everyone on the team to use. I mean, really put in the hours and design the hell out of that thing. And somebody said "Hey, can't you just do X?"

Sure, it'd take me five minutes. But you wouldn't get features A through F--you don't want any of those? They didn't.

I just did X.

throwawee··on Bill Atkinson doxxed Douglas Adams in 1987
It was a different time. Let's not forget Douglas Adams himself doxxed a man in the earliest versions of The Hitchhikers's Guide for being the worst poet in the universe.
throwawee··on Smashing the Limits: Installing Windows XP in DOSBox-X (2023)
You're looking at it through rose tinted lenses. I remember it getting blasted for its Fisher Price theme and ugly new Start Menu and Control Panel redesigns. Remember the search dog?

If Microsoft had a champion of UI consistency I think it'd be Windows 2000, but I wouldn't know from experience. I was given a Windows ME prebuilt.

throwawee··on New Mersenne Prime discovered (probably)
Needlessly confusing if Dan Brown is green and Dan Green is white. Somebody standardize Dans.
throwawee··on Researchers Find Cannibalized Victim of 19th-Century Arctic Voyage
Probably not even edible at this point. Should just throw him out.
throwawee··on Godot for App Development
This is with low processor mode enabled. Hell, it's still true when I multiply Low Processor Mode Sleep by 100. This is a blank default project that has a single empty node--and the window is minimized.
throwawee··on Godot for App Development
I love Godot for games but it's clearly not designed for utilities. The editor constantly uses a percentage of my CPU doing absolutely nothing. I don't think Godot executables can stop redrawing the window, only lower the FPS. I don't want my applications to be like that.
throwawee··on Can kids master the video games their parents loved?
Cup-and-ball popularity fell off but net-and-ball is going strong.
throwawee··on One of the most unusual heists in America seems to be unfolding at Taco Bell
A six-pack of Mountains Dew
throwawee··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Godot 4 already has hot reloading.
throwawee··on Inside the Super Nintendo cartridges
Widely believed to be because Mike Bison was a little too on-the-nose for a heavyweight boxer and the shuffle was the easiest way to make a last minute change.
throwawee··on PFAS 'forever chemicals' to officially be removed from food packaging, FDA says
I was briefly confused by the headline. How am I supposed to know what kind of forever chemicals are in the food if they take it off the packaging?
throwawee··on How do I become a graphics programmer?
Agreed. I've seen beginners fall into the trap of spending way too much time on software rendering that won't be useful or performant later because every platform they'll ever develop for has hardware accelerated rendering. I learned how to painstakingly render scenes pixel by pixel and then had to unlearn it because graphics programming doesn't work that way anymore.

Teaching beginners to render graphics without the GPU is like teaching them to do fractional math without the FPU. It won't make their first project better and gives them the wrong idea of what to expect.

throwawee··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
>there are various programmer types who find the Apple way really onerous and problematic, because they want to control everything

Treating customers like renters after they buy your products at a premium is a pretty onerous practice and it's pretty surreal to see the pushback characterized as megalomania.

throwawee··on Ask HN: Who is using the D language and likes/doesn't like it? Why?
I've tried it every so often over the years because I love what it was trying to do. Tragically, I think it might have been really successful if it just had optional GC/runtime from the beginning so it could stick to displacing C++ instead of competing with all the other fancy managed languages. Ultimately, C++ got a lot of ameliorating features to make it feel more like D and D had a lot of half-baked additions that made it feel more like C++.
throwawee··on What is wrong with TOML? (2019)
Thank you for introducing me to Hjson. I've been using simple colon delimited lists which seem to be, hilariously enough, already valid Hjson.
throwawee··on LÖVE: a framework to make 2D games in Lua
Yeah. I've had fun with Love2D but it's not even an engine, really. It mostly just wraps SDL functions (and a few other libraries). If that fits your use case exactly, go for it! But if you're looking for the FOSS equivalent of Unity, Godot is pretty much exactly that.
throwawee··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
I think package managers are the single most impressive feature Linux distros have over Windows. Everything else I use has some kind of equivalent; for a dev environment you can sort of get by with MinGW and MSYS. But if there's anything on Windows remotely as capable as apt or pacman, I haven't heard of it.
throwawee··on The Federal Helium reserve is for sale
Zeppelins are just a bubble.
throwawee··on The Cost of Good Movies
It's kind of inevitable. I grew up hearing movies decried as brain-rotting, imagination-killing junk food preventing everyone from reading a good book like nature intended. Of course the medium would be dethroned by something even more accessible.

When there's something even more convenient people will latch on to that instead. Expect nostalgia for the good ol' days when social media used to instill community values and awareness into the youth.

throwawee··on Noctis, the 'No Man's Sky' Forerunner Whose Creator Retreated from the World
I think L.in.oleum was the first language I was ever comfortable with. Everything else was abstractions on top of abstractions. Lino was just platform agnostic assembly, and I loved that.
throwawee··on Most tech content is bullshit (2020)
From one throwaway to another, this is a legitimately useful service and I hope you and others keep doing it. At this point I flip through the HN comments before the articles. The primary source links alone are a treasure.
throwawee··on Twitter engineering boss Foad Dabiri quits day after DeSantis launch glitches
It's a bird joke.
throwawee··on When the CIA spied on American citizens using pigeons
No, that's too much nutrition. Same reason Baby Formula 1 racers never took off.
throwawee··on A woman turned to a natural enemy of bacteria to save husband’s life
Thank you for this. I always appreciate click-unbaiting.
