throwawayk7h··on The Clock
Meant to be free of cultural preconceptions, but it uses 24-hour division.

There might be a natural, Schelling division to use -- the same ratio year:day could be applied, day:minute. Thus, the day can be broken up into 365.25 "Schelling-minutes" (corresponds to 3.94 SI minutes), and further into 365.25^2 "Schelling-seconds" (corresponds to 0.65 SI seconds). I think it's interesting that we get something not too distant from our own minutes and seconds if we do this.

Of course, for practical daily usage, lacking anything similar to an hour would be a problem. A "half-division" might be in order; that is, √365.25, or roughly 19.11 divisions of the day. Sure, that's close enough to SI hours... but it's probably worth remembering that there's a reason we don't like to use fractional divisions. :P

throwawayk7h··on Move Detroit
do they mean move "to" detroit...?
throwawayk7h··on Android Developer Verification
telling someone not to use corporate speech is policing their language.
throwawayk7h··on Android Developer Verification
"Being able to install software is why was why I switched to Android"

This doesn't make sense to me. iOS and Android (and HarmonyOS) all allow you to "install software".

throwawayk7h··on Canadian man says U.S. border officers made him give DNA sample
> “At no time did they question the intent of my visit," he said. "They never challenged that whatsoever.”

I wonder how they knew. Social media?

throwawayk7h··on I Built an Open-World Engine for the N64 [video]
In principle he could use alternative tools, like libdragon, but he said even if he did that it was unlikely Valve would permit it, as Nintendo would still be antagonized somehow. And Valve it seems wants to improve their relationship with Nintendo (See: Valve blocked Dolphin on steam, and took down a video showing yuzu installed on the steam deck).
throwawayk7h··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
Just as cis women can have the SRY gene, so too can trans women not have it.
throwawayk7h··on Epoch confirms GPT5.4 Pro solved a frontier math open problem
I thought it might do better if I asked it to do long-form multiplication specifically rather than trying to vomit out an answer without any intermediate tokens. But surprisingly, I found it doesn't do much better.
throwawayk7h··on A 6502 disassembler with a TUI: A modern take on Regenerator
Nice. Please add support for NES.
throwawayk7h··on GrapheneOS refuses to comply with new age verification laws for operating system
to clear up a misconception for everyone, systemd doesn't do age verification. it just lets you set age restrictions on accounts. It's very sensible.
throwawayk7h··on Oregon school cell phone ban: 'Engaged students, joyful teachers'
music players were often essential for my ability to stay focussed on my work and reading.
throwawayk7h··on Return of the Obra Dinn: spherical mapped dithering for a 1bpp first-person game
Outer Wilds is the best in class for this genre, IMO.
throwawayk7h··on As of today, Brazil requires identity verification to use social media
What constitutes social media?
throwawayk7h··on Animated 'Firefly' Reboot in Development from Nathan Fillion, 20th TV
I hope xkcd does a comic about it
throwawayk7h··on Montana passes Right to Compute act (2025)
Sadly this does not force phone vendors to allow bootloader unlocking.
throwawayk7h··on I ported Linux to the PS5 and turned it into a Steam Machine
There are a lot of ps5 hardware features like shared memory between cpu and gpu which I'm not sure games could take advantage of without being specially coded for it.
throwawayk7h··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
That was a 10:1 ratio of job openings to those seeking employment. That's not at all indicative of a 10:1 ratio of jobs to devs.
throwawayk7h··on The Xkcd thing, now interactive
I would add some lerp-smoothing to the position of the cursor/touch, since it's a bit rigid. Click-drag-release often doesn't result in a fling but rather a sharp drop.

Lovely idea by the way.

throwawayk7h··on Reading English from 1000 AD
I would rather like to see a fully modern rendition of this text. Even as English-first-language, I still find this hard to understand.
throwawayk7h··on Generative AI use and depressive symptoms among US adults
I think the causality is reversed. I have depression+ADD which has made life very difficult for me, but Claude allows me to be productive by helping me get organised and started on tasks, something normally very difficult for me.
throwawayk7h··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
I saw someone else using this feature. It does more than just be a chat bot. You can direct it to automate tasks like go to a web page, search for stuff, etc. -- I asked it to go to pinterest and download the top ten images for "cyberpunk," and it succeeded. Nifty I suppose.
throwawayk7h··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
It's more like if eating guano became a fad, and restaurants started offering guano dishes, and this one said "OK we'll still have guano on the menu because it is popular with some patrons, but we'll have a separate menu with no guano options at all for those who want to be sure they're not getting any."
throwawayk7h··on Terence Tao, at 8 years old (1984) [pdf]
What's his secret to eternal youth? He's 50 now but he still looks 25.
throwawayk7h··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
Parents can't easily prevent their kids from going to those kinds of stores once they're at the age where the parent doesn't need to keep an eye on them all the time and they can travel about on their own.

The difference though is that parents are generally the ones to give their kids their phones and devices. These devices could send headers to websites saying "I'm a kid" -- but this system doesn't exist, and parents apparently don't use existing parental controls properly or at all.

throwawayk7h··on All Look Same?
I got 6/18 for the faces ("Obviously, very bad.") I thought I would get at least 50%. Interestingly, of the ones I felt very sure about, I did much better (got about 4 out of those 6).
throwawayk7h··on Instagram boss says 16 hours of daily use is 'problematic' not addiction
habituation and addiction are technically different. But both can be very damaging.
throwawayk7h··on How a cat debugged Stable Diffusion (2023)
That's only misleading because you were expecting it to be more of an exaggeration than it was.

If it's misleading, it's because the cat debugged the computer's power supply issue, not stable diffusion per se.

throwawayk7h··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
Not sure it's 99.9%. I beat it on my first attempt, but that was probably mostly luck.
throwawayk7h··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
Ultimately nothing can match the ux of discord, but if you can convince someone to accept a bit of jank in exchange for freedom, matrix is the best choice.
throwawayk7h··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
I use matrix with several non-technical friends. Its UI/UX has improved greatly over the last two years or so.
