throwawayhhakdl··on Vitamin D supplementation to prevent acute respiratory tract infections (2017)
Without reading the study in detail, I feel like 4,483 is too few people to detect an effect like this because you can’t easily control for how much vitamin d people get from the sun.

throwawayhhakdl··on The Real Challenge Is Teaching AI to Play D&D
To be a dungeon master is effectively to achieve AGI. It’s... not realistic. Current NLP systems have mapped out what language means, and can use that to generate text. But they have no idea what the text means. It requires incredible knowledge about how the world works and an ability to explain its reasoning in plain terms.

Can you name any piece of intellectual property that has a small, recurring income after 30 years?
throwawayhhakdl··on Meaningful Availability
> A bunch of people couldn't get to us, but that wasn't really our fault (or was it?). At the end of the day the users didn't care if it was our fault or their ISP, so we counted that against ourselves.

So... what did you do about that?

throwawayhhakdl··on Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism (2017)
Further, The introduction of hotels to the game was not intended initially. Adding hotels causes more housing to appear, which is antithetical to the point of housing shortages
throwawayhhakdl··on Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism (2017)
That is... false. Trading down consistently only works if you’re playing with idiots.

Trading a high value property for a low value property makes sense if you get a color set, but if you do this multiple times with bare minimum competence players, the likely outcome is that everyone has at least one set, but you have booth the lowest amount of cash to develop things and the least valuable properties.

With the exception of edge case (although often optimal) strategies where you lock down the available houses, trading down is likely a sign that you’re trying to increase your likelihood of winning from 0% to 10%, while improving the odds to a greater degree for whoever is getting the better deal.

Most properties are superficial until they have specifically 3 houses on them. If you have three color sets, but fewer than 3 houses on any of them, you’re going to lose.

throwawayhhakdl··on Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism (2017)
No no no

The trend in board games right now is legacy board games, where the game maintains state after each session. What you really want is legacy monopoly. Where the winners of early games maintain their monopoly, and face a proletariat uprising in future games, making it an asymmetrical struggle for the elites to maintain power.

throwawayhhakdl··on Tech can't remember what to do in a down market
Subscription is the opposite of what you want for a product that nobody wants 95% of the time but then everybody wants 5% of the time. As a supplier you would be locked in to selling at a given price while your costs skyrocket.
throwawayhhakdl··on CDC outlines what closing schools, businesses would look like in US pandemic
People generally aren’t going to use them correctly, aren’t going to change them frequently enough, are likely to touch their face frequently if not used to the mask, and aren’t nearly as concerned about infecting others so much as protecting themselves.

Should you go buy some? Probably jot

throwawayhhakdl··on CDC outlines what closing schools, businesses would look like in US pandemic
That’s not a fair thing to say. Closing businesses doesn’t guarantee anything about the virus. The halting of economic activity, even temporarily, can devastate people’s lives because it doesn’t always come back and many people already live paycheck to paycheck.
throwawayhhakdl··on AB2712 – California Universal Basic Income
Housing is an essential. You can’t just go homeless without significant consequences. That’s not “voluntary”. Just moving somewhere else is not always viable.

To prove an extreme case, if I point a gun at you and say “$1k or I shoot”, you’re likely to pay. You gained not dying, but are you richer? Or did I merely use my power to impose an urgent need on you that you needed to pay for?

The fact that only he knew is really the crucial point here. That gives him incredible opportunity to sway the conversation. He also has the ability to cherry-pick which recordings to choose.

> What happened when Boston Public Schools tried for equity with an algorithm

Ugh

One thing I hated about this story was people complaining about being controlled by a black box algorithm. This was not a black box algorithm. It was, in fact, the opposite. It was an optimization solver that found the best outcome as defined by you given the constraints as defined by you. It could not be more transparent how it worked.

throwawayhhakdl··on What Coronavirus Does to the Body
What bothers me is the difficulty in interpreting such numbers because they’re not normalized to health.

E.g. dropping sperm counts in men. Is that dropping in all men? Or is it a side effect of rising obesity in enough men to dent the average?

Is the mortality 1/500 here because a good health 30 year old has a 1/500 chance of dying? Or because the 1/100 30 year olds with poor health have a 1/5 chance of dying?

throwawayhhakdl··on In Santa Cruz, a graduate student strike grows out of a housing crisis
I feel like I have to disagree. I did a masters there a few years ago, and lived in somerville for 2700/mo in a large 3BR split with two roomies. So very cheap. The commute was just about 25 minutes on very affordable, very comfortable public transit (red line).

Certain areas of Cambridge and Boston are very expensive, but we have plenty of options that are easy to make work.

A quick ddg reports much lower rates than what you suggest.

https://studentlife.mit.edu/housing/graduate-family-housing/...

The new grad housing is likely for established families who don’t want to live in a “dorm” but do want to live on campus.

throwawayhhakdl··on Indian police open case against hundreds in Kashmir for using VPN
I’m not especially familiar with those groups but I would think not. Semantics are subjective but I would tend to assume that there’s a pre-requisite that they already be in power, and yet be pushing for tripling down on those power structures.

Trump’s campaign rhetoric is emblematic of nationalist themes. Anti immigrant. Playing up cultural mythos. Bragging about military capabilities. Blaming foreign nations for most problems. Implying that a return to core values will bring greatness. Lots of fear and anger.

Tends to be very effective for groups of people that used to be powerful but are no longer.
