throwaway_374··on Samsung’s biggest challenge now is Google software, not Apple hardware
In terms of pre-loaded crapware, I was really infuriated by their Peel Remote Control app recently introducing a custom lockscreen overlay and ads without any warnings.

throwaway_374··on Iron Man-like flight suit by a British entrepreneur
https://www.rs-online.com/designspark/daedalus-the-jet-engin... for an interview with the inventor and link to working youtube video.
throwaway_374··on Brexit's Tech Brain Drain
Curious to get some perspective from (British) Londoners and how they feel about this. Do they not feel cornered out of the market against the top 1% of global talent heading to London? Particularly in tech with insane recruiting procedures.
throwaway_374··on Graph Data Structure Interview Questions
Almost certainly TwoSigma.
throwaway_374··on Bay Area professionals indicted for H-1B visa fraud
How would this work in practice? I'm guessing you're from a reasonably financially comfortable background so you don't have to worry about loss of security. What happens in 10 years time when the market only seeks Tensorflow experts with a PhD in AI and you're relegated to flipping burgers or driving ubers which you can't do anyway because robots and so you rely on basic income and lose all sense of worth and purpose to society...
throwaway_374··on Report: Uber CEO's Group Trip to Escort Bar Made Female Employee 'Feel Horrible'
Sorry as much as I hate Uber in principle and culture, this is a complete non story.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: Do you think there is market for mock job interviews with professionals
Without a doubt I found that being put on the spot and under pressure reinforces the learning experience in a way that is simply unmatched when trying to learn alone. Particularly for phone interviews where there is really a limited set of questions that can be asked as screeners and you just don't have the natural feel of discussing it with the interviewer face to face or chiefly having a piece of paper or whiteboard to illustrate your thinking.
throwaway_374··on Hiring without whiteboards
Yeah why not just ask a surgeon to perform in a janitor's cupboard. No gauze? No problem, improvise with a mop. Remember, the aim is not to actually perform the procedure, just see if you solve problems under stress.
throwaway_374··on Hiring without whiteboards
It took me 5 minutes on my laptop at home to code out a problem that I danced around for an hour on a whiteboard being stared down at by 2 engineers in silence. Yes, I had the benefit of hindsight, but unless you've actually done a whiteboard interview yourself where your livelihood is on the line for an hour, don't act like a trivialising nonce.
throwaway_374··on Problem Solving with Algorithms and Data Structures using Python (2015)
I really appreciated this resource for learning Python for interviewing.

My only criticism is in some cases particularly with the more advanced structures (graphs, trees) it approaches the matter as a literal translation of "data structures with python", as opposed to "pythonic data structures". A lazy example is probably Linked Lists which don't really serve any purpose in Python. Presumably that was the intention?

throwaway_374··on Paypal Horror Story 40k Frozen No Answers
You have my sympathies. A firmly drafted lawyer's letter should get their attention very quickly. This will cost you a small amount but it will bypass CS protocol and get you a senior.
throwaway_374··on “Banks are no place for coders”
lol Goldman with a proprietary secdb where techs and strats are locked into an ecosystem that they can't move out of whilst the firm is ironically trying to move off the silo?
throwaway_374··on “Banks are no place for coders”
Great well for what it's worth I'm a "multicultural minority" and you're most welcome to express your views through the democratic process if you are Londoner. Evidently, Londoners don't discriminate based on such irrational nonsense and therefore he does, by democratic definition, represent the "majority". Unless, of course, you were imply a representative "racial majority" in which case I have no words to say to you in a civil manner on this forum.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: What features of HN unlock with karma? Are there user levels?
I think there's an advanced level that lets you downvote comments, though I do find - particularly of late - it's pedantic and politically abused rather than sensible content moderation.
throwaway_374··on “Banks are no place for coders”
I've never worked for MS but my impression was that they are a decent tech bunch (corely Java). Also you can't really beat http://www.morganstanley.com/profiles/bjarne-stroustrup-mana...
throwaway_374··on “Banks are no place for coders”
Ah you were doing so well and I'd almost agree with you as a Londoner until you hit me with Muslim mayor. Frankly I'd much rather him than most of the flat out lying Oxford PPE scum.
throwaway_374··on Scrimba: a video format for communicating code
I was thinking about something very similar, essentially embedding an IDE on top of Youtube videos. Like others, I agree this is very neat. Is it just me that can't hear any audio?
throwaway_374··on Chinese firm ZTE pleads guilty to breaking Iran sanctions
Sanctions are collective punishment of a populus. America has no idea of how much anger it sows around the world. You will reap what you sow.
throwaway_374··on The Job Interview Will Soon Be Dead. What It's Being Replaced With
>>"In an effort to simulate their work environment, they bring in 50 job candidates at one time and pair them for 20 minutes. This is because work at Menlo is done in pairs, two people sharing a single computer, passing the mouse back and forth while brainstorming ideas.

They give them an exercise typical of the kinds of work done at Menlo. While the pair work together, a staff member observes their interactions. At the end of 20 minutes, everyone will get new exercises, new partners, and new observers. Twenty minutes later, they will switch for a third time."

Talk about extreme - excuse the pun - commoditisation of programming. Your experiences no longer matter. Just walk in, do your audition, and hope you can shine against the herd. This is frankly ridiculous and I cannot think of a single benefit this would yield.

throwaway_374··on Whiteboard Interviews
>>"Back when I was at Google, I was mostly interviewing people for “Developer Advocate” positions, and a lot of people somehow got into the process without being able to code at all. So, early on, I’d ask. “You’ve got a list of objects, write some code to select one of them at random. Any language, don’t worry about syntax, assume the built-in random function is good enough.”

That was actually a nice question: If you wanted to dive a little deeper, you could ask the candidate to sketch in unit tests. And if you’re talking to somebody super-technical, ask “Your code is in production and sometimes it’s throwing illegal-index exceptions under heavy load. What’s going on and how do you fix it?” Just because that’s a cool problem, very real-life, and most people smile when they get it."

Genuinely curious as to what the reasons for illegal-index exceptions under heavy load would be? I genuinely can't think of any reason. Perhaps the problem is under specified. Unit-testing would need to be seeded to be reproducible.

throwaway_374··on Dell Systems Developed by and for Developers
Sorry, I had a horrible experience with my i7 7537 http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-15-7537-No...

I stupidly fell for the sleek aluminium looks but the driver issues have been a nightmare since. Build quality is also terrible. My touchscreen is half fallen off as I write this and it's only 2 years old. I will never buy Dell again.

throwaway_374··on I spent three months working full time to get a job
This is almost facetiously hyperbolic. I don't have time right now but I'll be responding later.
throwaway_374··on An app that lets you pretend to receive a call when a co-worker distracts you
I think that would offend my British sensibilities. Unless delivered with a winning smile. It's amazing how much a smile can solve.
throwaway_374··on I spent three months working full time to get a job
>>At Valley salaries hiring someone for a day costs you $100k++. In more moderately compensated locales, lower bound it at $40k or so.

Sorry, WHAT?

>>pportunity cost of other team members (could be coding but are instead spinning up the new engineer)

Hey I've got news for you. Developers don't just waltz in and start coding from day 1, they need to be brought up to speed on the systems. Your business-nosed attitude needs a reality check. Developers are human capital, not robots.

throwaway_374··on I spent three months working full time to get a job
I'm going to assume "couldn't accomplish the task" means couldn't get it entirely correct. Do you provide a testing baseline that determine the expected behaviour? With TDD being the norm and correct way to test your program behaviour, I'm absolutely not going to go through every edge case with a fine tooth comb to check your "correctly formatted number" calls the API as you expect for a homework assignment. Provide a testing baseline or clearly demarcate the various possible edge cases as would be discussed in real life.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: 50 job applications, 15 interviews, 7 onsites, and no offer – what next?
Sorry, that's overly simplistic. We don't live in the 1950s. Modern discrimination is "he doesn't really fit into the team culture" ie can't really fist bump him and have a few kegs after work bro. The fact of the matter is teams are tribalistic and often that's synonymous with racially homogenous.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: What are some areas in 2017 which can be automated in Banking/Finance?
Probably inaccessible to an outsider, but there is strategically a big push in the industry to automate liquidity and market making across derivatives and fixed income.
throwaway_374··on ‘I must fundamentally change and grow up’: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s apology
Sorry but the words "I must fundamentally change and grow up" are unbecoming and not befitting of a CEO. As genuine and sincere as it may have been intended - if at all - it just comes across pathetic, weak and a failure. No one wants apologies. You're the fucking CEO, we want ACTIONS.
throwaway_374··on Airflow and the Future of Data Engineering: A Q&A
Minor gripe - why can I not execute an entire DAG (end to end) from the UI? Also trying to execute single tasks from the UI using the "run" functionality gives a CeleryExecutor requirement error... sorry, I know this isn't the help forums but it sounds like the most trivial tasks were overlooked.
throwaway_374··on Qualities that I believe make the most difference in programmers’ productivity
The 10x programmer is a myth perpetuated by senior management to get compliant submission from naive young code monkeys. End of discussion.
