throwaway7783··on Anthropic acquires Bun
Ahem, Temurin/OpenJDK disagree
throwaway7783··on Collaboration sucks
In my teams, I try to pre-empt as much as possible by getting feedback from users on mockups. And then the item is "done", only when product verifies the core flows before it goes to production. I don't do Scrum/sprints (I think it puts artificial timelines and unnatural item splits) , but more aligned with Kanban (this gives me never-ending grief about quarterly releases, QBRs etc, but thats another story). So we try to make what's "done" fairly well defined. Does this slow down shipping? A little bit. But in practice, we end up shipping something at least a couple times a week.

We used to play a bit fast-and-loose with what's defined as "done", and that allowed us to ship everyday, but the loose part of that invariably came back from our customers, at a much higher cost. So we went back to being a little more rigorous.

throwaway7783··on Pikaday: A friendly guide to front-end date pickers
Agreed. This works way better than struggling with date pickers not working on mobile, finding where the year picker is etc etc
throwaway7783··on Collaboration sucks
>>Prefer to give feedback after something has shipped (but before the next iteration) rather than reviewing it before it ships. Front-loading your feedback can turn it into a quasi-approval process.

Don't confuse this with "Don't test and don't do code reviews"

throwaway7783··on TruthWave – A platform for corporate whistleblowers
Or corporate espionage
throwaway7783··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Even with ballot boxes you still need to trust what happens after ballot enters the box.
throwaway7783··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Been using pip and venv for long. I get uv is faster, but I don't get why people drool over it this much. What is wrong with pip + venv? I build webapps so perhaps I don't see issues in ML world
throwaway7783··on The new calculus of AI-based coding
AI can help here too, by exploding the spec into a series of questions to clarify behavior.

Today, it just does something and when corrected it says "You are right!....".

throwaway7783··on How to tame a user interface using a spreadsheet
I love Balsamiq too and have been using it for 7 years now. For me it's the best way to define a product requirement, and share product ideas.

throwaway7783··on Rating 26 years of Java changes
Okay, that's fair. I don't even know anymore what point you are trying to make.
throwaway7783··on Rating 26 years of Java changes
Why are you assuming you cannot write your own library and use it with Spring? It's not an either/or, just like most frameworks are. You are framing it as if there is only one way to do it in spring.

Please do not project things like "you guys don't even know..". I'm one of "you guys" , and have built production code in a variety of languages and frameworks. So this "you guys" knows exactly what he/she is talking about.

throwaway7783··on Rating 26 years of Java changes
Whole point of spring is so you don't have to write your own libraries. Batteries included and all.
throwaway7783··on I switched from Htmx to Datastar
I agree on caching. But in general my point stands. The updates in question may not even be shared across users, but specific to one user.

Philosophically, I agree with you though.

throwaway7783··on I switched from Htmx to Datastar
A good example is when a page has expensive metrics specific to say a filter on the page. Let's say an action on the page shows a notification count change in the top right corner.

While morph will figure it outz it's unnecessary work done on the server to evaluate the entire body

throwaway7783··on I switched from Htmx to Datastar
yes you can, but the complexity is now moved to server side template wrangling. With SSE, its just separate events with targets. It feels much cleaner
throwaway7783··on I switched from Htmx to Datastar
I like that datastar has better defaults, embracing SSE makes certain things much simpler and cleaner even on the backend (no need to wrangle templates with htmx oob for example).

I am okay with the open-core and pro model.

But, the maintainers are quite combative on HN and Reddit as well. This does not bode well for the otherwise great project.

throwaway7783··on Show HN: I wrote a full text search engine in Go
You are neither confirming nor denying, why won't you just tell if you vibe-coded it or not?
throwaway7783··on Python 3.14 is here. How fast is it?
pypy has a c-extension compatibility layer that allows running psycopg2 (via psycopg2cffi) and similar for numpy etc.

What makes Figma more complex?
throwaway7783··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
The Indian government claims to have shit down Pakistani jets as well and Pakistan denied it. Pakistan claims to have shit down six jets and India says it's 3. So there is that
throwaway7783··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
I'm curious to know what it is that India didn't fare well in the recent conflict. Based on my reading I was under the impression that original incursion was a military success for India and everything else after that was theatre on both sides. What am I missing?
throwaway7783··on Mesh: I tried Htmx, then ditched it
Do you think apps like this are not a good fit for HTMX? Drag drop interactivity?
throwaway7783··on AI was supposed to help juniors shine. Why does it mostly make seniors stronger?
100%. This has in general become a trend across my company. Less so developers, more so everyone else spitting LLM generated content, and asking real people to review and provide feedback. I mean , WTF.
throwaway7783··on Microsoft memo advises H1B employees to return immediately if currently abroad
Where do you hear this? All I'm seeing is people praising this on X, people split here on HN, and people being downright racist towards Indians on Reddit h1b forums
throwaway7783··on Microsoft has urged its employees on H-1B and H-4 visas to return immediately
I really would like to understand what did last administration do to open the doors. Didn't they actually deport historically high number of people?
throwaway7783··on Microsoft has urged its employees on H-1B and H-4 visas to return immediately
>>those who are coming here are from the class who have the most say in the conditions of the poor in their own countries.

Wow, okay. How does this work? All such people actually rule those countries? Or their votes somehow counted more than others?

throwaway7783··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
That's what I said. This is not the intent of H1b and exploiters must be punished. Classifying countries into low trust/high trust without understanding the full context of history and exploitation (by the so called high trust societies) and saying they are "gleefully" exploited, is disingenuous. Also see https://www.uscis.gov/tools/reports-and-studies/h-1b-employe... , and it's not just WITCH. In fact American companies have the biggest slice
throwaway7783··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
I'm against these top sweatshops, but is the answer to that is ban the entire subcontinent?

Also, I don't know how many h1bs have you worked with. I have worked with many (hundreds), and it's the same spectrum of talent you'd find anywhere. This is probably not the intent of h1b, but banning a set of countries is not the solution. Changing the criteria is.

throwaway7783··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
I never pick up calls from numbers that I don't know. If it's important they leave a message. And if I think it is important, I call them back through official phone numbers
