throwaway67743··on Ask HN: Why is my web server being attacked?
Enabled cookies? Checked your TCP/IP settings?
throwaway67743··on Clang now makes binaries an original Pi B+ can't run
Iirc the original pi was a set top box chip, because it still at the time had directfb gpl code available (as every StB used) - I remember it quite distinctly as I laughed how pointless their experiment was (sort of wrong, but actually the rpi has done more for encouraging competition than anything they've produced themselves)

Also broadcom haven't made phones, while they do still have a strong tv/StB market share, but that's declining due to their incessant proprietary attitude

throwaway67743··on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Committing to Netplan for Network Configuration
Can someone explain to me why netplan even exists? I don't see any utility in it, I don't change out my network connection manager on a daily basis so what use is a sub par abstraction when I can configure my manager of choice directly? For me it's just one of the many many reasons I don't touch Ubuntu, but sometimes I have to deal with it and I always end up shaking my head at the half baked crap they keep adding.
throwaway67743··on Official releases of the Transmission BitTorrent client might be compromised?
Strikes as clueless developers right there, may have to reconsider choice of software...
throwaway67743··on Wise is deactivating Business cards in the US on Oct. 31st
It's infuriatingly dumb as my backup high street banks (in multiple countries) have failed to implement this, I noticed when I got a new eco card, it's not even always 150 eur or 5 times, sometimes it is less of both.

I understand risk mitigation but I am not a moron and it's my responsibility if my card is used without my authorization and thus they can just pass liability onto me I don't care, it's not a credit card I can't spend more than I have on it.

Secondary to that, at least here they never update contactless limits, so it's still 500kc/20 eur, ať which point you are required to enter pin anyway, iirc back home in the UK many terminals allow up to 100 per transaction without pin

throwaway67743··on Wise is deactivating Business cards in the US on Oct. 31st
Interestingly I've not had to do any of that but I expect given the age of my account it was grandfathered in and isn't subject to the same rules that newer accounts have, I did notice they unverified my LLC though re obtaining cards but I guess that may just be different regulations they need to follow now, or requirements from partner banks as they've changed 3 or 4 times since I opened my account (very early on, one of the first).

Other than slow support I've not really had any issues though, when I do contact them they usually get it right - ie I asked them to add card transactions to web hooks as for some inexplicable reason it wasn't done, they added it within a few days and that was around a year ago.

Also they're not based in Estonia, they just have a presence to satisfy license requirements, they're still based in the UK (they also have a Belgian presence for some of their licenses too etc)

throwaway67743··on Tell HN: Wise froze $40k+ in funds for 10 days and counting
PEP is wholly incompetent in any language, I'm still flagged as a PEP because I'm the father of a 60 year old US senator, despite not having any ties to the US nor possessing a time machine.
throwaway67743··on Tell HN: Wise froze $40k+ in funds for 10 days and counting
They used to be good back when they started, but alas not only have the grown significantly and can't deal with the support load, but as they're growing towards being a "real" bank (ie; they actually have licenses to operate) they're subject to much stricter regulation, so this will only get worse.
throwaway67743··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
Why would you give a third party control over your device? You're just renting overpriced devices from Apple at this point, one of the many reasons I stopped buying iPhones (that and they're just awful anyway, the UI/ux is offensive.)

By using this crap you're allowing Apple to brick your device on a whim etc if they feel like it.

throwaway67743··on Ask HN: "Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube" aggresively
Interestingly when the thread came up the other day I was seeing it, now I'm not, still a/b testing maybe, or stop harassing when the user just closes the window and doesn't come back
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
Probably for user containers, but I've only ran it as root generally to avoid those sorts of limitations so haven't noticed any issues - I rarely use docker and only use for quick testing and then switch to non-docker installs
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
Podman makes this better, as it doesn't trash my ipt/nft rules in the process, and its essentially stateless amongst other useful things
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
I hadn't seen that, thanks! even has clear information on how to build natively and has a reference config
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
I stand corrected, looks like its come a long way since I last checked - will have to give it another go
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
It means I have to sit and read through the Dockerfile (or compose, in many cases, which is even worse) and figure out what its doing and what magic variables I need to provide etc, when just providing a binary download url and an example (or reference) config does just fine, not everyone uses docker
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
I think I did and when I couldn't find useful installation details I gave up, I don't use docker or kubernetes, so if projects can't be bothered to make information available for a generic install, I immediately lose interest.
throwaway67743··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
Ohh, looks extremely promising, I've been after something with a bit more flexibility than Dex while not being Keycloak/Java etc, an LDAP backend would be awesome as well though (another thing thats lacking is a simple ldap server, perhaps with sql as db, openldap is excessive and glauth isn't there)
throwaway67743··on Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars from centre from 2025
I've said you don't need a car all of my life, but after moving out of capital cities it's actually reality that you do need a car, it's just not practical otherwise regardless of how good public transport infrastructure is.
throwaway67743··on Firefox tooltip bug fixed after 22 years
I've just been trying to think how long the most annoying Firefox issue I see every day has been around, it's at least 10 years and it's very disruptive - copying just will, 70% of the time, not actually copy (mostly when copying URLs, as in right click, copy link context option, but happens on other occasions too even when using ^x)

I can't be the only one suffering this, because no other application does it, although thunderbird has done on occasion but that is hardly the worst thing about it..

And then there is Firefox on Android, some genius decided to disable pull down refresh by default, not a bug I guess but more annoying than the plethora of problems.

throwaway67743··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
I didn't say client, I said frontend (ie; invidious, which is not a webview nor a client), but the likely reason its easier to pretend to be android is they have to support older versions for a long time, once you've emulated the behaviour its difficult for them to fix that
throwaway67743··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
They do, and invariably fail but I'd argue trying to hide an adblocker is going to be more tricky than pretending to be android, for example.

But both downloading and alternative frontends still work fine, I just got the message on youtube for the first time (only on desktop though, not android, firefox on both), minor inconvenience to run yt-dlp in an internet accessible folder and means I retain the content should their random behaviour make it unavailable in the future.

throwaway67743··on YouTube isn't happy you're using ad blockers – and it's doing something about it
This was solved in broadcast a long time ago, I'd imagine similar could be done for videos delivered to web browsers, but you'd still be able to detect the insertion then I guess, so it wouldn't be very useful (unless its WideVine/HDCP or similar so it couldn't easily be seen, but eh)
throwaway67743··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
Or use an alternative frontend, or download the videos first? Why would I pay for content that isn't monetised and thus the "creator" (for lack of a better word) gets nothing anyway? I'm not going to fund Google, they already get some from reading my (spam) emails.
throwaway67743··on Extreme parkour with legged robots
War of the Worlds (recent remake) is finally here!
throwaway67743··on Play Leisure Suit Larry free in DOS running in browser
I failed the age test as it asked which one of these is not a war?

Crimea, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese - technically all 4 were, although one was a civil war but a war nonetheless!

throwaway67743··on 1.1.1.1 lookup failures on October 4th, 2023
People had global networks of the same scale long before, they just didn't offer the same features because they had different products.

Also DevOps crap is not a selling point, as much as hn wishes it to be.

Also fastly et Al have the same or better ability but nobody talks about them?

throwaway67743··on 1.1.1.1 lookup failures on October 4th, 2023
Quite. Nobody else can do what they do! (Brb doing the same thing before Prince was even born)
throwaway67743··on 1.1.1.1 lookup failures on October 4th, 2023
They use transparency as a cover for rookie mistakes it's not the same as actual transparency. Especially as these are really bad examples of doing it wrong.
throwaway67743··on 1.1.1.1 lookup failures on October 4th, 2023
I've never loved cloudflare - as someone doing this long before they existed I see through their wordy blog posts about rookie mistakes. It's embarrassing really.

We are not even close to the most important species, arguably the most detrimental in fact. Unfortunately most people are pretty narrow minded.
