throwaway5752··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
Realize the administration is not competent or ethical. It fits their behavior and has predictive value.
throwaway5752··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
They didn't simply expel them, the sent them to a foreign prison. Don't misrepresent what occurred. And Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a legal resident. They are doing this to people who _do_ have the right to stay. Even for those who are in the US illegally, they are entitled to basic human rights and have protections under US law. They can be deported in accordance with domestic and international law.

Sending them to foreign prison camps instead is in fact a crime against humanity.

throwaway5752··on Trump's Tariffs Wipe Out over $6T on Wall Street in Epic Two-Day Rout
In the end, countries are nuanced enough to understand American political dynamics. They see Orbans, they see Le Pens, they see Trump, and they know what is behind it. I am quite sure that Ukraine did not expect anything else from the Trump faction of the Republican party. His victory was not unlikely and he is a simple creature. If different factions win, they will be eager to work with America again, with less trust and reliance.

Realistically, it is for the best if countries are resilient to US failure. It will make Americans generationally poorer, but the world will be better off for it.

throwaway5752··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
The inflation is a desired and intended side effect of the tariffs, the statement by Powell is part of a chess match and his removal will be part of an intended outcome.

Trump will try to replace Powell extra-constitutionally and at this point, I suspect he may succeed. It will be close to the lights going out at that point.

throwaway5752··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
I see you as having been downvoted. I have no idea why - it is on topic, and correct. Further, it is not hard to deduce why he will remove Powell, or the impact on America vis a vis the US Dollar. The "Mar a Lago" accord spells this out, with all its faulty logic.

They have an agenda that is based on errors, ignorance, and being manipulated by parties that are adversaries to America and democracy. Soon this will be irrecoverable within this generation, at least.

People have the mistaken belief that things are bad right now. They can get drastically worse.

throwaway5752··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
Naked political corruption! Welcome to America in 2025.

And Hacker News gestalt generally thinks politics is off topic - guess what happens to "disruptors" in a crony capitalistic system?

Hacker News and YCombinator, more than anyone, should be at the vanguard of stopping this. It will set innovation back by a decade by the end of the current administration's term.

throwaway5752··on Tech companies are telling immigrant employees on visas not to leave the U.S.
That should not be the case, and your saying this is an indication of how far America has fallen. You can just look at the Afghanistan withdrawal. That was executed by the 2020-2024 administration to complete an agreement signed by the 2016-2020 administration. It was unpopular and a bad outcome, but the 2020-2024 administration realized a country had to keep its word, even with the Taliban.

If the word of America is not honored that is exactly the disgrace I'm talking about. A nation's word - the treaties they sign, the contracts or agreements they make with people of other countries - has to be honored. Like the conditions of visas.

An administration can change future agreements or renegotiate within the frameworks it agreed to, but it should honor existing agreements. That is one of the many ways a government is not like a corporation.

throwaway5752··on Tech companies are telling immigrant employees on visas not to leave the U.S.
Regardless of your opinions of guest worker visas, they are here voluntarily on legal visas. The immigration lawyers at these companies are advising them they may not be allowed to reenter, for no cause.

It is a disgrace to the honor of America.

throwaway5752··on Doge Is Trying to Gift Itself a $500M Building
It is not an executive building, and they have not claim to it. They will take credit for the cost savings, hence "gift".

This is not clickbait and can't be overstated, there is no precedent for this sort of action in recent history in the US. Your normalcy bias is the problem.

throwaway5752··on xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B
Because it is run by Elon Musk, and he hasn't shown any sign that he's no longer good any running things. His successful endeavors are the ones he neglects.
throwaway5752··on xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B
I'd feel great being someone that financed the takeover of X/Twitter, and being stuck with inflate shares in an also-ran AI play. Obviously there is no rule of law for Musk, and no recourse for them.

He'll keep his ball of twine rolling past TSLA's next earnings date on April 22nd.

throwaway5752··on They Might Be Giants Flood EPK Promo (1990) [video]
They really are an amazing band that defies neat classification. https://tmbw.net/wiki/This_Might_Be_A_Wiki:Other_Bands_You_M... is quite the list.
throwaway5752··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
And why would they when they can pop Starlink and get a far bigger prize? https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/17/us/politics/elon-musk-sta...
throwaway5752··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
I have read that one of them (thanks to sibling commenter, yes, Witkoff) was traveling in Russia while on this group chat, and that the chat disclosed the identity of an intelligence officer.
throwaway5752··on White House Reviewing Signal Use After War Plans Chat Leak
There are two scandals

- OpSec failure to use an insecure non-DoD channel to communicate military operational status. Doesn't matter if it's signal, SMS, Slack or anything.

- Signal specifically is e2e encrypted without retention, in fact a first class feature to delete messages after some time. This bypasses legal requirements for record retention. Even if an "approved" DoD channel was used, the deletion of communications is a massive, massive scandal.

As others have noted, specifically Signal has a special bulletin due to exploits by Russian actors. This is a big infosec story proceeding in real time. The Hegseth / Yemeni / Goldberg angle is a small facet of it, and possibly least important.

throwaway5752··on White House Reviewing Signal Use After War Plans Chat Leak
This struck a nerve. Here's another comment to downvote about how this is more about the widespread, illegal Signal usage than the war plans accidentally leaked over Signal. Both are major stories. One is an extraordinary security incident. The other is concerted effort to bypass recordkeeping and disclosure. Nobody will ever be able to be able to FOIA these messages, which rightfully belong to the American people.

I can't imagine the confusion of the mind that thinks it is conservative to behave in this way, or to think this is political and not related to technology.

throwaway5752··on White House Reviewing Signal Use After War Plans Chat Leak
They are not the same story in reality. HN duplicate rules not agreeing with reality is HN's problem, nobody elses'.

throwaway5752··on Ex-US Attorney Jessica Aber Investigated Russia, CIA Leaker Before Death
Former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Jessica Aber, who was found dead at the age of 43 by Virginia authorities on Saturday, was at the helm of high-profile investigations into intelligence leaks, allegations of war crimes against Russian-linked individuals and people suspected of providing sensitive U.S. technology to Moscow before she stepped down at the start of the year.
throwaway5752··on Tyler Cowen on Immigration, Doge, and 'The Great Forgetting'
Every single thing he says is laundered pro-corporate policy given the veneer of an academic voice. He gets so much money and prestige from conservative causes, and has so little comparable serious academic research economist credibility. You can find his CV and confirm, he's a political philosopher that writes in the context of economics.

A good writer, an interesting person, but very overrated economist. And much more insufferable as he begun this self=laudatory fart-sniffing phase.

throwaway5752··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
Remember this: it is illegal. People can claim it's not, people can claim "truth doesn't matter any more" or "they make the rules and control the media"

But you have your own eyes and brain and you know it is illegal. It is plainly illegal, which is why nobody had done it before this. They are doing illegal things because they are crooks.

They are trying to get you to give up and lose hope. Hacker News is far more of an echo chamber in that regards than other environments.

throwaway5752··on Greenpeace must pay over $660M in case over Dakota Access protest activities
This is a pyrrhic legal victory. If they can operate within the bounds of the law, it prevents asymmetrical outcomes that can't be made whole with financial restitution. If they can't operate within the bounds of the law, worse outcomes are possible. Particularly for ETP with their widespread physical infrastructure.

Like others note, leaving that aside it seems like a kangaroo court outcome in terms of the facts of the case and amount of damages.

throwaway5752··on Why Is White House Using Starlink to 'Improve Wi-Fi'?
That is defeatist nonsense. Sounding cynical and jaded can be confused with wisdom, but you're vastly overstating their power and influence. You would be surprised how much you as an individual can influence your senators and representatives just by calling them regularly.

But back to the point, why are they sending packets outside government networks? What are they sending? Who else may have access to that data?

throwaway5752··on Why Is White House Using Starlink to 'Improve Wi-Fi'?
Why indeed. Everyone in this forum knows this is complete bullshit. So why are they doing it, and willing to lie about it?
throwaway5752··on The race is on to build the most complex machine
The United States is credibly threatening to invade Canada, Greenland, and Panama.

It is throwing absurd tariffs at anyone with a pulse except for Russia.

It stabbed an ally, Ukraine, in the back. For a treaty with their invaders. Dividing Ukraine's national resources between the US and Russia, negotiated without Ukrainian representation, in Saudi Arabia.

The space between the perception of America and China internationally has much less space between them a lot of Americans would prefer to acknowledge. I don't have much recent data, but I would suspect international sentiment on the whole right now is more favorable of China than the US in absolute terms.

throwaway5752··on The race is on to build the most complex machine
If you do business in the US as ASML does then it's a good idea to comply with sanctions. Otherwise they'll sanction you too.

It only works until it does not, and it works less well if one does not abuse it. Maybe this administration will just make it more profitable and safer to ally with China at this rate. A number of countries will be making this decision in the next four years, and Americans very well may be disappointed.

throwaway5752··on Can Trump Arbitrarily Take Money from Anyone's Bank Account?
A de facto surrendering of Art III is the same as the presumptive crisis. We are here, though, it's no longer a hypothetical to maneuver around.
throwaway5752··on Can Trump Arbitrarily Take Money from Anyone's Bank Account?
A lawsuit is never meaningless. One doesn't stop trying to enforce the law because a criminal is persistent. And someone that willingly breaks a law for immoral reasons and without being willing to face the consequences is a criminal.
throwaway5752··on Can Trump Arbitrarily Take Money from Anyone's Bank Account?
Not legally. They are attempting a number of illegal actions to see what they can get away with, though. That doesn't change that it is illegal.

You can simply imagine what Rand Paul would say about it if the Biden administration did it if you think otherwise.

throwaway5752··on Ask HN: Would you reapply to a company that ghosted you?
Of course I would. Companies can have recruiting issues that aren't related to engineering. They can be forced to freeze a hire and not advertise it. It is an irrational decision to do blacklist them.

Who is harmed by blacklisting a company? The company will just hire someone else, and you potentially won't have a salary.
