throwaway40483··on Sccache, Mozilla’s distributed compiler cache, now written in Rust
When I see these rewrites, I'm always left wondering about the speedup achieved. How much was due to:

1) Going from programming language X to Y 2) Rewriting the algorithm in language Y

I suspect (without any proof) that too much is attributed to 1) and not enough to 2).

throwaway40483··on Google Cloud is 50% cheaper than AWS
Nothing. This is just a tactic to "silence" critics.
throwaway40483··on Apple Considers Expanding into Wearables with Digital Glasses
I think this can be boiled down to (hopefully without offending anyone):

AR = gaming "nerds" VR = "real" people

Apple has always targeted "real" people. It's very similar to Android vs. iPhone, where Android is preferred by people who like more control to tinker with their phones ("nerds") vs. iPhone users who want an integrated out of the box working solution.

throwaway40483··on More Americans Leave Expensive Metro Areas for Affordable Ones
I think the article makes it the correlation between education attainment (a proxy for income) and net loss. So, it isn't that millenials are aging. It's whether they get credentials as they age.
throwaway40483··on Inside Magic Leap, the Secretive $4.5B Startup Changing Computing Forever
This quote stuck out to me:

"Abovitz wants Magic Leap to stay in Florida; one of the benefits of manufacturing there is that it allows the company to keep its secrets. If it were headquartered in Northern California, that would be nearly impossible, given Silicon Valley’s job-hopping culture and well-lubricated rumor mill."

He's actually trying to pass off one of (the?) SV strength as a weakness.

throwaway40483··on Class-Divided Cities: San Francisco Edition
Everytime this issue comes up, this post deserves a link:

https://techcrunch.com/2014/04/14/sf-housing/

Probably the best written summary of the SF housing shortage.

throwaway40483··on Jack Dorsey Is Losing Control of Twitter
This is a reference to the Twitter blue bird logo. But yeah, it also caught me by surprise at first.
throwaway40483··on Google Canceled the Launch of a Robotic Arm
This "we must protect our brand" is really weird. If you look at the sentiment here on HN, it's pretty much "Oh great, Google is in the news again. I wonder which product they're sunsetting today". Maybe Google only invoke this for their HW products and not their SW.
throwaway40483··on Twitter Is Expected to Field Bids This Week
For the uninitiated:

throwaway40483··on Twitter Is Expected to Field Bids This Week
Facebook = people you (grudgingly) know

Twitter = people you want to know

throwaway40483··on Cathy O’Neil on Weapons of Math Destruction
Definitely one of the better (high wonkish/entertainment ratio) podcasts.
throwaway40483··on Cathy O’Neil on Weapons of Math Destruction
I think she addressed this by saying that the judges usually end up being more racist than the baked in racism in the algorithms.
throwaway40483··on Rust: The New LLVM
Yes
throwaway40483··on Elon Musk Supports His Business Empire with Unusual Financial Moves
Here' the correct link:

throwaway40483··on Ex-Reddit exec launches 'Imzy,' a warmer, fuzzier Reddit
I think you should be careful with this claim. This is what got Twitter into trouble.
