throwaway287391··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
> Yeah accidentally switching that one caused some grief the first week as I fumbled for the "right" button to dismiss it. But Having to use it is not my experience. Does the previous generation insist you use it?

You're right, it can be dismissed that way. I looked for a way to disable it completely and quickly found that wasn't possible, but I did discover the right-arrow trick you mentioned. But it doesn't make it disappear for long, and I never managed to build up the reflex of pressing it regularly (it's kind of non-obvious, you have to admit), and to be honest I'd mostly forgotten right-arrow did that. But thank you for reminding me, I may have to try to work on that muscle memory.

Everyone seems to love the LG WebOS software, I seem to be the only one that absolutely hates it. I have the LG E9 (previous generation, one year old). The picture is great but I hate just about everything else about it. Having to point at things with the "magic remote" is the least usable input interface I've ever encountered -- I'm not sure if I'm just completely devoid of motor skills but I find it ridiculously difficult to point at a particular thing on the screen, especially if it's a small hitbox. I genuinely don't understand how anyone likes it (but I know they do). I guess I'm the only one who still sometimes watches linear TV but the on-screen program guide is basically unusable; it takes literally a full minute to load 2 hours' worth of shows for the currently displayed 10 channels sometimes (and then repeat if you scroll to view a different 10 channels). Meanwhile my cheap Samsung dumb TV from 5 years ago works flawlessly (other than being only 1080p) and it's easy to browse with the arrow-key-based remote.
throwaway287391··on Lego Microscope
Even you're misconstruing their recommendation. "LEGO is always an adjective" implies there is no plural form, because there is no noun to begin with. You're supposed to say "LEGO brick(s)", apparently...

> I’m not sure why people sign these things though...

The clauses are usually (in my experience anyway) restricted to things that are "related" in some way to your core work. I personally don't question the boundaries on this "related" and assume that anything that involves writing code belongs to my employer. This doesn't bother me because I rarely write code outside of work [0], and I suspect most people who are employed full-time to write software are the same.

[0] Rare exceptions: solving silly puzzles when I get nerdsniped, and automating random things on my personal phone/laptop. If my employer finds out I'm doing either of those and would like to claim they own the IP for them, they can be my guest.

throwaway287391··on Chrome’s address bar will use https:// by default
Wow -- life-changing, thanks! On the native iOS keyboard, hold down spacebar and (without lifting your thumb) swipe left/right to "scroll around" within a text field (at least in the Chrome address bar, but presumably anywhere). Amazing that after 5+ years using iOS I'm still discovering these hidden but basic features...
throwaway287391··on Chrome’s address bar will use https:// by default
I hate that editing URLs is practically impossible in Chrome on iOS (not sure about Android or other iOS browsers). There seems to be no equivalent of arrow keys to navigate around inside the address bar. If I screeenmash enough I think I can sometimes get it to go to the very start or end of the URL, but anything in between is hopeless.

(Posting this partially in hopes that someone tells me how to do it to prove me wrong...)

throwaway287391··on Bill Allowing Big Tech to Form “Techno-Governments” to Be Announced Today
Couldn't a tech company that is sufficiently determined and large enough to fulfill the requirements already try to incorporate a new city/county through whatever the standard method is to do that in Nevada? Does this "just" signal the state's support for companies doing so, or make that process easier / more likely to be approved? Or is it something qualitatively different? Like, would these city/county governments be able to do things that a normal city/county government couldn't?
throwaway287391··on Ask HN: Why are e-ink note-taking devices so expensive compared to iPads?
> Even if someone had rushed out of the gate in 2018, they would probably not have ad products ready for a couple of years (and last year there was covid too) - and this with the most basic tech, which we know actually took significant time to be refined.

Ignorant question: are you not allowed to start developing a product, or "planning" to develop a product, before a patent it infringes on expires? I see from glancing at Wikipedia that with a US patent, "making" the item is infringement, but where is the line on that? Is it that you literally can't fully make the thing, i.e. only get 99% of the way there and you're fine? Or is it infringement to have an on-the-record chat with a buddy that you're thinking of working on X when the patent for X expires? (Responses in the form of LMGTFY are welcome, I couldn't quickly figure out how to search for this.)

throwaway287391··on New report on Apple’s VR headset: 8K in each eye, potential $3k price tag

Lol. Just picturing the reactions of the hip baristas in SF who already disdain techbros for spending 5 hours at the coffee shop with their laptops/headphones and their one cup of coffee when said techbros upgrade to VR headsets.

throwaway287391··on German police take down 'world's largest darknet marketplace'
Why do you say that? Anecdotally there are tons of cannabis listings, and from a quick search I found this study [0] (Fig. 3) showing cannabis was easily a plurality of drug sales on one darknet market (31%, with the next most common being dissociatives+psychadelics, which is also a broader category, at 22%).

throwaway287391··on MindGeek: The owner of Pornhub and RedTube
Did they really not provide censored versions of their screenshots or give you some sort of warning before you opened their portfolio? That's funny, but IMHO it doesn't sound very professional when applying to work at a non-porn business if that's the case.
throwaway287391··on New York Times Best Seller Business Book

throwaway287391··on AirPods Max
Yeah, this is a large part of the reason I don't see myself using it much either -- if I'm at home watching video it's almost always on a TV screen. Also, I don't understand why it's still only supported by a couple streaming video services (none of which I personally use) -- Netflix already has Dolby surround audio in many of their videos, so shouldn't it be pretty easy to enable spatial audio in their iOS app? Well, clearly not, but I don't understand why.
throwaway287391··on AirPods Max
Interesting, thanks -- I hadn't thought about using it for games but I could see how it might be more interesting for interactive stuff. I'm not sure if there are any iOS games that support it yet but presumably it's possible? (Didn't find anything with a quick search.)
throwaway287391··on AirPods Max
I'm surprised spatial audio is a selling point for anyone on a product this expensive. Have you tried it? I have AirPods Pro and I spent £6 on a month of Disney+ just to try out the spatial audio feature when it came out (which already felt fairly ridiculous but what can I say, the HN comments were too enticing). I used it for 5 minutes, rotated my head around a bunch to maximize the effect, thought "hm, that's pretty neat" and then went on with my month never using it again. It really felt like a gimmick to me but I'm wondering if I'm missing something now...
throwaway287391··on The Economics of Christmas Trees
So it takes 8-10 years to grow a tree to maturity, and the profit margin for the farmer is $8-10 per tree. A farmer grows a tree for me to make a dollar per year. This is staggering to think about to me. Unreal.
throwaway287391··on Violent, lively and brash, taverns were everywhere in early colonial America
What's the danger in "opening that can of worms"? IMHO the world might be a better place if there were a lot less killing, whether it's in the context of a war or not. Some killings throughout history are certainly justifiable or excusable, but it seems far more dangerous to me to stick one's head in the sand and avoid reflecting on whether each killing really needed to happen, or if the victim could reasonably have been spared without significant risk of harm or jeopardizing the larger cause (presuming the cause itself is just). "Murder" doesn't seem like an unreasonable label in the latter case. (Whether and how the killer should be punished in such situations is a separate question that I'm not taking a position on here.)
throwaway287391··on Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
> Transcriptions from dead composers like Busoni are allowed in competitions. So if you're dead and gone, your transcription is a "work". If you're alive and playing in a competition it's not allowed, unless the student is making emendations to an already transcribed piece.

Huh, interesting... Do you happen to have a pointer to any more info/context on this or a link to a competition’s rules where they say this? I played piano for a long time (although never at anywhere near an international competition level) and I’ve never heard of this; it seems like a really bizarre rule to allow competitors to make arbitrary changes to an already-altered piece, but not allow any changes at all for a fully original one. I feel like I’m missing something.

throwaway287391··on Why Italians don't drink a cappuccino after 11am [video]
I searched when I saw the video was 7 minutes long and found more results about why Italians don't drink a cappuccino after lunch (or noon). The explanation is they believe milk after meals impedes digestion. (I guess the video had a different but related explanation.)
throwaway287391··on Weird A.I. Yankovic: Generating Parody Lyrics

throwaway287391··on John Gray: 'What can we learn from cats? Don't live in an imagined future'
“Close” in a relative sense. They implied we’ll have the cure for death in the next 2000 years or so, with the 99% and humans having existed for roughly 200K years. Sounds plausible to me.
throwaway287391··on Mood and cognition after low LSD doses: A placebo controlled dose-effect study
So for attentiveness and anxiety, the 5 and 20 mcg doses both had a statistically significant effect vs. placebo, but the 10 mcg dose didn't. Should that lead me to believe that there's really a dose-response curve with two peaks near 5 and 20 and a valley in between, or should I be wondering whether they got "lucky" finding a significant result with either the 5/20mcg doses? (P-value was <1% for the significant results.) Is the former (multiple peaks in the response curve) known to happen in other drugs?
throwaway287391··on Some onions were too sexy for Facebook
> "We use automated technology to keep nudity off our apps, but sometimes it doesn't know a Walla Walla onion from a, well, you know," Facebook Canada's head of communications, Meg Sinclair, told BBC. "We restored the ad and are sorry for the business's trouble."

Pretty affable for a public corporate PR "incident" response. I like it. Is this a Canadian thing?

throwaway287391··on I built that “so-and-so is typing” feature in chat (2014)
> Anyway, the real problem is people who ask “what were you typing?” when you delete your message. That seems so rude to me!

I've never actually had this happen to me, but I nonetheless fear it will 100% of the time I start typing something and then delete it. In any IM application that has a typing indicator (especially Slack at work -- I shudder at the thought of typing out a long message in #general), I've taken to drafting messages that require any non-trivial degree of thought to type in a separate box, e.g. a message to myself, and then copy-pasting it into the actual chat.

throwaway287391··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
> How does having a "professional critic" only prevent you from getting fake reviews? It could easily be manipulated by companies paying reviewers for biased reviews. Same as sponsored YouTube reviewers.

It doesn't of course, but (going back to the RT comparison) it would be a major scandal if it were ever discovered that a well-known professional movie critic were being paid off by a studio for biased reviews. A website that focused on this could keep track of and remove the special status of reviewers caught doing that. Given that obtaining the "professional reviewer" status is quite expensive (relative to making an RT account) and such people have much more to lose than a random user, I tend to trust the RT critic score much more than the user score.

If it's possible to establish a similarly robust reputation system for user reviews with no external source of validation (e.g. a newspaper/journal hiring someone as a reviewer) I'm definitely all for that! That seems much more difficult to me though. But maybe if it continues as a niche community as you say, it could work. I hope it does.

throwaway287391··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
Yeah this is cool, but if it gets any traction I'd expect the fake reviews to quickly make the site useless without a ton of investment into spam detection. Given that Amazon sucks at this as a trillion dollar company with purchase data, I don't have much hope for a new startup or personal project (not sure which it is), but I'd really love to be proven wrong.

To be honest I was hoping it was even more like RottenTomatoes, focused on aggregating credible professional reviews of products (like RT focuses on professional critics, though they do also have user reviews).

throwaway287391··on “Really successful people say no to almost everything”
> I have to wait on hold. [...] How do we avoid this?

Hold really is awful. And it's gotten so much worse during covid. Re how do we avoid this: for starters, there should be laws against companies putting people on hold without providing a callback option. As far as I can tell there's no reason not to offer a callback option except to screw over your customers who aren't willing to wait on the phone and listen to their awful hold music for an hour straight to save some money on customer support and prevent your unwilling customers from cancelling. (BTW while we're at it, there should also be laws allowing anyone to cancel a subscription service online. California partially does this by requiring an online cancellation option when the subscription was started online.)
