throwaway1892··on Roguelikes: The Misnamed Genre (2011)
okay, thanks
throwaway1892··on Roguelikes: The Misnamed Genre (2011)
didn't you post on the 'dex a few years ago? (just curious, seen a similar username in some older threads)
throwaway1892··on New Maps Reveal Global Fishing's 'Vast Scope of Exploitation of the Ocean'
As a French, I think I've as much "China/SE Asia is overfishing" as "Europe is overfishing". But usually it turns political very quick, since the region supported by the fishing industry don't have many other economical prospects.
throwaway1892··on Making Millions by Distributing Pirated Movies
Yes, they are paying software creators to add a chrome install in the installer, usually with a checkbox that's enabled by default. I remember the creator of VLC saying that refusing Google's offer was the hardest decision he's taken, so the money offered must be good.
throwaway1892··on Postmortem: Every Frame a Painting
Yeah, it's the same thing for me.
throwaway1892··on Will automation put an end to the American trucker?
Even in France, with paying interstate (called autoroute here) and subsidized rail (it was a state monopole until recently), most of transport of goods is by truck.

I think it's mostly a last mile problem (you'll need big trucks to carry from the station), compounded by the fact that most of the train station of cities and I don't think they is a lot of dedicated cargo train station. Also you do not control part of the schedule: you are dependent on the departure/arrival time of trains. And don't forget the strikes...

throwaway1892··on Study finds putting people in prison increases re-offence rate vs. probation
Where did you get the numbers for France? I though that it not possible to do any ethnic census there? Perhaps it could have been done by asking for countries of birth for the parents/grandparents.

Also when you are saying colonies, is it the former colonies (North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Ex-Indochina) or the current overseas departments (in the Carribean, Guiana in South America and in the Indian Ocean)?

throwaway1892··on Charts that don’t seem quite right, organ donation edition (2015)
I had a discussion with a French medical student concerning organ donation. She said that the type of death where organs can be donated (cerebral death if I remember right) is very uncommon (compared to cardiac arrest) so we did not have to worry about it (or needed to opt-out). In addition, like in the Austrian example, the relatives are consulted for their assent.
throwaway1892··on Charts that don’t seem quite right, organ donation edition (2015)
Or the superstition that the organ will be harvested while you are still alive.
throwaway1892··on Best RPGs of 2012-2016
I just liked the various graphs used in the article, so I wanted to share that.

As for the rest of the site or the thread discussing the result, I don't think you'll miss much by not wading further.

throwaway1892··on It is as if you were doing work
I wonder if this submission would have gone to the front page if I had added game (or [game]) in the title as I first intended when posting it...
throwaway1892··on Redesigning Google News
I was disappointed by their redesign and I think I won't be using it much. There is too much wasted space, the banner at the top is useless (for how I use the site) and the selection of article for a story is too limited, only 3 compared to a dozen in the old design.

At least this afternoon I still had access to the old design by disconnecting.

He did said that the drinking was done outside of work hours.
throwaway1892··on How to build the next Trello and sell it for $425M or more
Jira can be configured into sthg unusable, Trello can't. But Jira can be configured to be nearly as simple as Trello, if not as much user-friendly.
throwaway1892··on The Heroism of Incremental Care
Well, in France, except for car-commuting, we're going fast gain all those habits.
throwaway1892··on I Had My Electronics Seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
> I'm racist, for example, as are pretty much all other people in the US

FTFY.

I think that a part of human nature make us distrust those who are different, whatever the difference is.

I remember that one because of the offer to learn Oracle during a cruise, complete with the important part "Convince the boss" : http://www.dba-oracle.com/BC_cruise.htm
throwaway1892··on Japanese toilet industry agrees to standardize complex bidet controls
For Europe, at least where I am, it goes both way, in some parts the women are on equal footing to men, but in other parts it's the opposite, with women seen as inferior to men.
throwaway1892··on U.S. sues Oracle, alleges salary and hiring discrimination
> how they threat each other.

Do you imply something here or is it just a slip?

throwaway1892··on Galileo satellites experiencing multiple clock failures
What makes you think they do not need it now?
throwaway1892··on Yes, organic farming will kill us all
I hope that the solution is applicable, as I hope that the policy can be changed. But that's something on the long term.
throwaway1892··on Yes, organic farming will kill us all
> Farming lobby in Europe

For my perspective in France, here the farming lobby is inexistant/inefficient, since farmers had to big pretty big actions all over France just to raise the price of milk. So I think it's not the farming lobby, but the fertilizers and pesticides lobby.

throwaway1892··on Yes, organic farming will kill us all
The problem (here in France) is that the number of farmers is going down hard (with suicides every day). They are currently crushed by regulations, labor costs, undercuts by products from other countries with different labor costs and regulations and the supermarkets that make big margin on their back. So your solution is good, but it is not currently applicable here in France.

> a spoiled population that still hasn't fully digested just how irrelevant they have made themselves in the world.

I think the problem was more with the various gov we had since De Gaulle than the population. And also with the massive immigration and the political exploitation of the migrants.

And when it's not a strike, it's the breakdowns. This morning, my commute was one hour longer since there was no train on my line and I had to walk to another one.

Yeah, if you're not a big firm, you'll have a lot of difficulties.
throwaway1892··on A Visa for founders, engineers and investors willing to join France
I'm calling BS on that. No, you get paid during your holidays in France, wathever the type, RTT or annual leave. In addition to that, you can take unpaid leave.

Perhaps you were a contractor? In that case you would not be paid when you're not working.

> * Cheap nursery.

The problem is the limited number of places. All the persons around me struggle to find a place in nursery for their childrens.

> * Quality public schools.

It is highly dependent on which school. In lot of public school, it's shit.

Where do you get your passport done in a week? Last time (in 2014) I did mine, it was closer to one month.

And for culture, apart from some museums when you're under 26, public libraries and cultural festival, you have to pay for the rest (theatre, concert, expositions...), even if they are subsidized.

> Are you trying to imply that Syrians and Tunisians have NO positive economic impact?

Why is this comment dead? It was more or less my point, which that a lot of unqualified migrants, mostly from Africa and Asia, has no positive economic impact, since we have NOTHING to offer to them (no job, no future). So I am opposed to more unqualified migrants coming for economic reasons. Syrian refugees, on the other hand, I think we should help them.
