throwaway1892··on A Visa for founders, engineers and investors willing to join France
From what my former classmates told me, for profiles that are roughly equivalent, it looks like to be closer to 40k. But then they are not in consulting companies.

And I'm too much of a lazy ass to look for another job. Also I have few reason right now to seek a higher salary.

Yeah, like a temp agency, but we are full employees, which means we are still paid between contracts.

The problem is knowing the market rate.

I've had my Engineer's Degrees from ISEP last year and I'm working at Alten since October 2016. My official title is development engineer (Ingénieur d'études). Before that, I've done two six-months internship as a junior java dev.

Alten is a technology and engineering consulting company, which means, in the context of the French market, that when a company, need a particular profile (like java dev) to staff a position for a set amount of time (like for the expected duration of a project), they'll contract Alten for a developer, java, for x months.

Well, my 36k salary, while working around Paris, disagree with your assertion.

I would say 46+ k€, before taxes, which are 33% corporate tax rate and ~30% on personal income. But I'm not sure how it applies to people with tech visa.

Could you expand on corruption? I am keenly aware of its existence in the construction sector there, but do you any other examples?

That's odd, I felt very welcome when I was there hiking this summer. But then it might not have been in the same areas, plus the usual difference between the country and cities.

Well, the current government could be trying to have one positive result. And have some example of migrants with a positive economic impact.

> The limit of freedom of speech

Could you expand on that? I'm French, living and working near Paris and I would be interested to hear what limits do you think of.

Personaly I think it is no worse that any other Western country.

Edit: The limits I can think of are more from media watchdogs, which can be ignored (just look at Dieudonné). Or you can be sued by anti racist/anti _____phobe associations for slander, but I would not qualify that as a limit on freedom of speech like can exist in other countries.

I've been using it for years, so I did not realised they had closed Labs in the interim.
throwaway1892··on How Antarctic bases went from wooden huts to sci-fi chic
I remember reading a lot about staying during the winter in Antarctica from this: http://www.funraniumlabs.com/category/antarctica/

Alcohol, lot of alcohol.

throwaway1892··on Ask HN: Have you experienced completely loss of interest on everything?
Does never having any interest in anything count?

Still, my work is not my (whole) life and is nothing more than a way to earn money to support me. At least that way I'm not disappointed by my current job, which is mostly useless and unrewarding.

throwaway1892··on Nintendo Switch
Fair enough. My comment was mostly valid for the Wii and Wii U lineup, I agree that it's better for the DS.
throwaway1892··on Nintendo Switch
> Typically the best games on the whole platform.

Also perhaps the only worthwhiles games on Nintendo's consoles.

throwaway1892··on How Designers Engineer Luck into Video Games
In the XCOM games, one interesting aspect is to mitigate bad rolls and stack bonus to increase your chances to hit.

So with enough skill, you can remove most of the luck aspect from the game.

throwaway1892··on How Designers Engineer Luck into Video Games
XCOM2 does it too.

You can see the code in there : https://twitter.com/m1sp/status/697268847187890176

It is increasing your chance to hit if you've a missing streak and if you have lost soldiers. And lower the chance of the enemy hitting you if they've already hit you this turn and you have less than 5 soldiers. So you can (and will) miss 90% shots, it should not happen twice in a row the same turn.

In the code of XCOM2, modders have discovered that the game cheat in your favor by increasing your chance to hit if you've missed in your lasts shots. And lower the chance of the enemy hitting you if they've already hit you this turn.

So you can (and will) miss 90% shots, it should not happen twice in a row the same turn.

throwaway1892··on Ask HN: Do you carry a backpack? Which one?
An eastpack shoulder bag, enough space to carry a book for the commute and a water bottle during summer.

On the other hand, I don't think the concentration in THC was the same between the cannabis now and then and it's even worse for the processed form.
throwaway1892··on Ask HN: What manual processes would you automate in your company?
Creating Jira accounts and giving them access to the right projects. It's one of my jobs.

throwaway1892··on Fleet of 12 Nuclear Submarines in Line for Pentagon Approval
As said in the conversation you linked (which is interesting, thank you), the obsolescence is for the attack submarines close to their target, whereas missile submarines, like the Columbia, has still the rest of the ocean to hide.
throwaway1892··on Fleet of 12 Nuclear Submarines in Line for Pentagon Approval
Well, the sub part is pretty expensive, since you have to accomodate 100+ people, with a nuclear reactor/diesel engine + batteries and all the supplies for a long trip. And they need to be able to move undetected, that's the point of the nuclear missile sub as a strategic deterrent.

I found a breakdown there: https://www3.epa.gov/watersense/pubs/indoor.html

throwaway1892··on Request for Startups: Water
If you're including water for shower/bath, dish and cloth washing, it does not seem a lot.

I think he meant the labor laws are protecting more the employee than the employer, notably on the firing part. So, as far as some theories go, if it is hard to fire employees, employers will be more reluctant to hire, reducing worker mobility.

But I only have a small experience of the consequence of our current labor laws (which are very hard to change, the current gov tried last year and got massive protests for their trouble).

Edit: Also the employment taxes (the one paid by employers) are very high in France (half of the salary +/-).
