throwaway0x7E6··on There’s no such thing as affordable housing
>limiting ownership to a very long lease (e.g. 99 yrs) similar to what they do in Singapore.

...and China.

I wholeheartedly agree with (2), but this is not the way to do it, for a number of reasons.

throwaway0x7E6··on Tell HN: Whole Yandex Git repository leaked
>but regulations have forced them to cripple it in some ways

the regulations don't apply to Microsoft apparently, because even goddamn Bing has been better at it than Google for years now.

it's remarkable how little time it took for the big pharma to become our greatest ally

>Don’t roll your own crypto

as far as I can tell, they're neither inventing their own algorithms nor implementing existing algorithms from scratch. that's what "Don't roll your own crypto" supposed to mean, not "just use Bitlocker"

throwaway0x7E6··on Official Warning: Zero3K
no it doesn't, these things get flagged in minutes and only the people with showdead get to appreciate these
throwaway0x7E6··on How do AIs' political opinions change as they get smarter and better-trained?
we have no way to evaluate that. OpenAI products are severely lobotomized. Microdoft fears another Tay

their bullshit pointless essays are out of place even here
throwaway0x7E6··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
>At the end of the day, most people are fine with "buying" a book that they don't own as evidenced by the sales.

most people are under the impression that they own the things they've paid for, and the inevitable rug pulls always take them by surprise.

rejecting the bullshit rules of rent-seeking parasites would be a more worthy principle to pursuit.

throwaway0x7E6··on Bitcoin hashrate drops nearly 40% as deadly U.S. storm unplugs miners
I really doubt bitcoin mining farms use power from the grid, that's simply not viable. they can only operate with near zero electricity prices.

throwaway0x7E6··on Password Requirements: Myths and Madness
kinda. you can calculate the number of bits of entropy in the password

8 character long alphanumeric lowercase password: (26+10)**8 = 208827064576 possible passwords. 11000010011111000100000010000100000000 in binary = 38 bits of entropy

20 character long upper+lower+numeric+other ASCII password: (26+26+10+32)**20 = 2901062411314618233730627546741369470976. 132 bits of entropy

128 bits of entropy is considered to be enough for all purposes

throwaway0x7E6··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately
I should have clarified - I mean I was wondering if any browsers block fetch to remote URLs from local files

I do vaguely recall encountering some problem I didn't expect when I was making a tool contained in a local html file, but I dont remember which browser I was using at the time

throwaway0x7E6··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately
> Con: Any issue (there have been many) in WebCrypto implementation at time of encryption can not be fixed by browser upgrade (because of secret caching).

has there ever been an issue that made WebCrypto produce invalid ciphertexts/hashes/PBKDF output?

throwaway0x7E6··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately
for local files as well?
throwaway0x7E6··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately

which ones do that?

throwaway0x7E6··on Threeuk is blocking Tutanota
>Who specifically hate and fear dissent in western democracies

the people and entities in power

>what's the mechanism against that?

disarming the population

throwaway0x7E6··on Threeuk is blocking Tutanota
>it's like wtf leave it alone guys, we are not in north Korea

we will eventually get everything they have in NK/China/Russia/Iran, under a thin veneer of being done for our own good and accompanied by a mass media campaign that will convince a sizeable population of useful idiots to accept it all. the venerable western democracies hate and fear dissent as much as those loathsome dictators do

throwaway0x7E6··on Regulating Crypto: How we move forward as an industry from here
you die, hopefully.

crypto will live on. but the "industry" of money people parasitising on it will inevitably die. and that's a good thing
