throw737858··on What is inflation?
Cryptocurrencies can have inflation too. All it takes is to change a few settings in code. Some cryptos already changed their monetary policies.

And somehow daily trading volume is 10x higher than actual transactions on network. It is almost like someone is printing money out if thin air.

throw737858··on Babylon and the Square Root of 2 (2011)
This tablet could be made by 12 years old scribbling his homework. Most important thing is they actually had geometry and used it.
throw737858··on Social media are turbocharging the export of America’s political culture
Is it a good thing for US? In 90ties we only knew American culture from sitcoms like Baywatch and Friends. Now your political culture turned into Southpark and US is a joke.
throw737858··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
It was in some article, "58% milenials"
throw737858··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
It is not "socially normal/acceptable" to be single parent, yet 60% of young parents are single.

You are both out of reality.

throw737858··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
Imagine some people retire in peace at 50. What a sad, sad, pathetic existence :)
throw737858··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
There absolutely is an option to skip career and family. It is 2021, social reality is that women can be breadwinners too. And it will be more and more difficult for women to find a breadwinner.
throw737858··on The Surveilled Student
FB, Google etc dropped gate keepers.
throw737858··on The Surveilled Student
Did you visit public library recently? It is closed or full of homeless people. Scihub and laser printer is much better option!

For $50/hour you can find experts in most fields. You could even hire underpaid postdocs who teach at unis.

throw737858··on The Surveilled Student
One more reason to skip uni. Remote only experience for full price with orwelian nightmare included. All documentation and lessons are online for free. You do not need human text to speech engine that costs 30k/year.
throw737858··on The work-from-home future is destroying bosses' brains
I worked in similar company, I could do all my weekly work in 10 hours. But company did not like my side projects.
throw737858··on Someone has to foot the bill for empty offices
Churches and malls were converted to residential buildings. Why not office space?
throw737858··on The Cerebras CS-2 wafer-scale engine (850k cores, 40 GB SRAM)
There is something on YouTube. They are very profitable, machine learning, filtering and stuff. No trading.
throw737858··on Android 12 Beta 2 is introducing new features for Privacy
How about permission for Internet access? Older versions had it, but it was removed.
throw737858··on French set to replace English as EU’s ‘working language’
Why not arabic? French is kind of obsolete.
throw737858··on Always Be Quitting
》making yourself replaceable”; “deprecating yourself”; “automating yourself out of your job”

That is horrible advice. How about:

You quit, and get hired back at 5x rate as consultant, because nobody understands the system. It is not your job to fix broken management!!

throw737858··on Getting the Goalpost to Stop Moving
For most people the goalpost has moved so far, it is not even visible. Maybe it is time for another goalpost: do not take student loans, do not get married, and you will do fine.
throw737858··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
> just because younger people feel like they deserve to live in their house.

Well, they do deserve those houses. If we expect young people to work, pay taxes and raise new generation. This is yet another middle finger to young people. No wonder birth rate is in toilet.

throw737858··on Ask HN: What hardware/furniture/hack greatly improved your WFH setup?
Some tasks make computer less responsive. This way it is isolated.

And it is cheaper for the same price. I can have lightweight laptop, yet relatively beefy desktop cpu.

throw737858··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
Someone who owns a house in cali is a milionaire. I am not sure it applies to immigrant who just moved to California.
throw737858··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
California used cheap migrant work force for decades, but that stream is drying up. This pyramid scheme is one of reasons.
throw737858··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
In China nobody owns a house, it is just leased from government for 70 years.
throw737858··on Ask HN: What hardware/furniture/hack greatly improved your WFH setup?
Integrated GPUs. Look at Deskmini X300
throw737858··on Ask HN: What hardware/furniture/hack greatly improved your WFH setup?
Laser printer and printing all books and documents. About 300 pages/week.

8x4k 27" screens in portrait mode plus TV. I connected laptop and two desktops with Barrier, so all share single mouse, keyboard and clipboard.

I found it better to work on multiple machines simultaneously. Background tasks do not slow it down. And connecting 9 displays to single machine is tricky. It is cheap junk, but looks like power plant control center. And productivity gain is there.

throw737858··on Vivaldi 4.0
I think it follows spirit of old Opera 12 very well. It is even opensource (kind of).
throw737858··on Russia to U.S. -Lift sanctions on space sector or we'll exit space station
Starship will make whole ISS obsolete. One more reason to leave early and invest into modern research.
throw737858··on Russia to U.S. -Lift sanctions on space sector or we'll exit space station
》Turkey invades Bulgaria tomorrow

Have you seen news recently? It is happening every few months. Bulgaria had to call army to secure and enforce borders. There were new barriers installed, Turkey used bulldozers to demolish them.

throw737858··on Russia to U.S. -Lift sanctions on space sector or we'll exit space station
Chinese would be happy to pay for it for sure. Money spend on ISS could be used on new space station or other space programs, for example to gain chip independence. Russia is trying to be more self-sufficient, there is political backing for that.

ISS has questionable scientific value, all those vibrations prevent most scientific experiments like crystal growth. And NASA runs it like flying hotel for space tourists and now "disabled astronauts".

throw737858··on Russia to U.S. -Lift sanctions on space sector or we'll exit space station
ISS is old, leaving was economical decision. Russians can get better and cheaper station. Now they are just milking it for political points.
throw737858··on Intel: AMD Threat Is Finished
> Alder Lake will implement big.Little, which has been used for many years in the smartphone space to improve power efficiency. Hence, by combining high performance and high frequency cores

Windows CPU scheduler does not handle variable CPU cores. They differ in performance and CPU instruction support etc..
