throayobviousl··on Saffron as an Antidepressant (2018)
Because SSRIs take weeks to work, it is theorized that they actual modify DNA expression and other things that are slow to action.

Serotonin itself has little to do with depression at the synaptic level

throayobviousl··on A specific network name can completely disable Wi-Fi on your iPhone
But it doesn't need to, and we are talking about a modern system.

C was great for its time, now its time to move on and use a sensible language.

throayobviousl··on A specific network name can completely disable Wi-Fi on your iPhone
Seems like an annoying DoS bug for sure. This is why having an actually secure watchdog is so nice. I still don't understand why people jailbreak in 2021.
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: Why Poetry did not become a mainstream package manager for Python?
Its pretty good but you can get almost all the functionality with venv, make, and pip.

pip install -r requirements.dev, reference requirements.txt in it. It will install dev packages and the main ones.

throayobviousl··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
Adguard is 99% the same, and free, and on iOS.
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
I have two Aerons. They are great and really comfortable. I think in general I hate office style chairs though and I prefer to move around a lot, lounge, or stand up. Its hard to sit for a while.

You can get good refurbs on ebay just avoid madison seating. They are a scam (got sued by HM). They list chairs NEW on ebay that are literally refurbs.

throayobviousl··on Dell not shipping Gaming PC's to California?
Its california, so some useless regulation for sure
throayobviousl··on Airbnb Support Is Shit
Is it a superhost? I would never book a room that isn't from a superhost. Keep hitting them up on social media they will take notice.
throayobviousl··on How a Jenkins Job Broke our Jenkins UI
Its been a while, but basically horrendous UI/UX, unintuitive way to create jobs and manage variables, things like that. I don't know if it was completely rewritten in the last 2 years but it was dogshit awful before 2019.
throayobviousl··on How a Jenkins Job Broke our Jenkins UI
I would rather use Jenkins for all of eternity than use TeamCity again. TeamCity is probably the worst CI/CD product out there.
throayobviousl··on The Endless Work of Trying to Win Yourself a New Life
Why am I not surprised that trying to win sweepstakes is a full time job
throayobviousl··on Neural networks emulate any guitar pedal for $120
seems like you never used an Axe Fx
throayobviousl··on Google’s new popup will further weaken Facebook’s advertisement business
Google absolutely needs to be sued for monopolistic practices. You literally _cannot_ share location data without Google getting it as well. This is beyond ridiculous.
throayobviousl··on Alternate Instruction Set
The most annoying thing about esoteric wiki articles is missing context. Most of them explain the thing but not HOW or WHY it matters or why it is important.
throayobviousl··on File Permissions: A painful side of Docker (2019)
Isn't this a bit of an anti-pattern? There really are very few situations in which you should be mounting things in production. Apache/PHP/etc is definitely not one of those situations.
throayobviousl··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
I hardly trust Amazon to ship me authentic toothpaste. Who the hell buys a $7k item?

I try not to buy anything from amazon since FBA is mixed in with knock offs and other garbage items. They have no quality control at all and don't care about knock offs.

throayobviousl··on Switching from Mailchimp to open-source Mailtrain and AWS SES
This line of reasoning is how to tell the difference between a manager and an engineer :)
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: How do I get a FAANG job in security?
Thanks that is actually helpful
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: How do I get a FAANG job in security?
Because they pay a ton of money and hire some of the smartest people
throayobviousl··on The Tether Ponzi Scheme
>Is there a meaningful difference between them paying the influencers in USDT compared to paying them in USD?

Yes. You print USDT and pay someone then lie about not printing it.

For the love of god, don't hold any USDT. Its really convenient to exchange cryptos but don't be holding it when the cards fall.

throayobviousl··on Plex Plans to Place All Legal Streaming Options (and Piracy) into One Interface
Anyone with a brain knows that piracy is an availability problem, nothing else. Make things available for a reasonable price with reasonable ways to watch and people will do it. Looking at you, HBO in non-USA
throayobviousl··on The data model behind Notion's flexibility
Apple notes

Google docs

Trello

throayobviousl··on The data model behind Notion's flexibility
Notion is cool but I went back to trello because its so damn slow. The ios app would refresh all the time and fail to sync. The web app was generally buggy.
throayobviousl··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
While the cards are used heavily, thermal cycling arguably is worse than running a card 24/7. These cards do not generally experience any thermal fluctuations and were probably kept within adequate temps
throayobviousl··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
Nvidia literally sells mining cards that do not have outputs

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/cmp/

This is all a scheme to stop the used market from ruining their MSRP pricing.

throayobviousl··on CEO behind Japan’s best-performing stock says his secret is raising salaries
Is it a coincidence that sony and nintendo have horrendous online offerings?
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: How do you find time to do all the thing you want to do?
Literally write out every single thing you are doing in the day and then you will realize where the waste is coming from. If you want to do something, put it in your calendar and do it.
throayobviousl··on 10.6L 3-Cylinder Diesel Truck Engine Beats Emission Targets, May Run on Hydrogen
Hydrogen seems cool but it has a huge problem with energy density and cost
throayobviousl··on Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked
Not hacked, just working as expected. a 51% attack was well known from the beginning and it is just a consequence of blockchain. Just another reason why private blockchains are just stupid, just like ethereum classic.
throayobviousl··on Ask HN: How does performance appraisals happen in your organisation?
Once a year and it is mapped to specific objective criteria. It is meant to be as objective as possible and then tailored to your specific needs and goals.

I like it. No 360 bullshit, no subjective manager bullshit. Everyone is held to the same standard.
