Yes, not just creativity but actual humour and experimentation! Not to mention taste.

Wow I remember when this came out. Finding the different clues on the ground was pretty amazing back then. I played that PC Gamer demo over and over and over.

I'm saying the reason there isn't any pushback is because the whole system is working as "winner-take-all," hence pushing back on ANYTHING that Donald Trump does, when there is no other Republican who can challenge him for leadership, is like scoring on your own net. It's a bad strategy if you're trying to win the game!

Adolfo Franco (interesting name for a right-wing strategist..) said it best on Al Jazeera. "How can he be a spokesperson for a man like Donald Trump?" He was asked. his answer was that he's a spokesperson for the REPUBLICAN PARTY, and in 4 years, there will be a new nominee. Simple as that. Time will tell what happens.

Polarization has reached "existential threat levels." It will eventually go back. Vance may find that moderation is in his party's interest after all the chaos of Trump. They are very different personalities.

It's a mess, but it feels alien, which is what you want with sci-fi and especially Dune.
throaway89··on On David Lynch's Revenge of the Jedi (2018)
Lynch hated Dune because DeLaurentis meddled with it so hard (Jodorowsky famously said they only way Lynch could have made a movie so bad, is if the producers ruined it).

This is pretty hand-wavy. I was diagnosed with a rare disorder. My doctors said surgery was the only option and that it would be fine after. As it turns out, there's a radiation therapy that is 80% successful, been practiced around the world for 20 years with no serious side effects (including cancer), AND is practiced regularly by a RO here where I live.

I had to find out about him by myself because my doctors didn't do anything other than look up my condition and give me the most common treatment option. In my case surgery usually makes things worse and is NOT advised other than as a last resort. My doctors didn't know any of this, because they didn't do their research.

The US is a paragon of (domestic) democracy and (domestic) human rights next to China, and I say that as a HARSH critic of the West.

There'a a whole generation of Canadians who won't send a single dollar anywhere near the US thanks to Trump. I don't think we'll ever forget this.

The whole issue with the idea that "Trump is destroying democracy," isn't that what Trump is doing is NOT damaging to democracy, or corrupt, or what have you. It is. But Trump will be gone in 4 years. There will be a new Republican nominee. Whatever (and I mean, whatever) that nominee says will be the new party line. And the idea that the Republicans are willing to continue an actual overthrow of law and order in the US is...close to a fantasy. The Republicans are with Trump as long as he is the most popular candidate. As soon as he is no longer useful in that function, he's toast.

throaway89··on What the Most Famous Book About Trauma Gets Wrong
Ive been really struggling to make sense of what is true or not. There are so many therapists who treat The Body keeps the Score and stuff like Polyvagal theory as pure science or fact. How is it that they can continue to push this stuff when it keeps being "debunked?"

Can your phone or your car remove you from real life? Are you required, by definition, to use a car or a phone to talk to people, in real life?
throaway89··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
Good point!
throaway89··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
You know what they say about assumptions! I have no cell phone and dont own a car. I dont need either and truly feel pity for those who do, realistically or otherwise, feel they need one. Im not interested in playing a fatalistic game of race-me-to-the bottom.

Surveillance isn't even my main concern. It's the hijacking of people's attention, and the way it makes people think that they can somehow live out their life on the internet in a way that's comparable to real life, that makes me upset and has soured me on the internet.

Thankfully Hacker News isn't interested in hijacking my brain or addicting me or making money off of me. Yet it still does hijack my brain; oddly enough the only real way to steer clear of this, is to steer clear of Hacker News.
throaway89··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
That's a totally false dichotomy and indicative of the attitude I'm talking about. You can have a social circle that isn't subject to surveillance (let alone control) by the corporation that owns the platform you are speaking on, because REAL LIFE is not a platform!
throaway89··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
No it has not! It is very scary. I have family members that grew up not caring anything about technology, never owning a computer, being indifferent and criticizing the younger generation for being so tech-addicted. Now they bring their ipad to bed every night, crow about their reddit comments, and generally act as if the internet is essential to their happiness, or is letting them make their mark on the world.

I think that if you grew up using technology pre-2000, or are generally tech-savvy you can easily see the problems and they scare you because you understand the ways that things have changed so drastically. Windows 11 (for one example) doesn't even allow you to set up your computer without being connected to the internet? That's an objectively bad decision as far as a computer product goes; the ONLY benefit is to Microsoft and their data-collection business! But if its normal to you, it's "not a big deal." "Why are you complaining?"

I can be very persuasive, ive been told. But people today are addicted. There is no doubt. You can see the fear in their faces as they try to come up with reasons why "they" are the exception, as if they are different from every other person.

throaway89··on In the belly of the MrBeast
And the internet hijacks our brains so effectively; since it became ubiquitous, it is almost impossible for regular users to see how they are being conditioned.
throaway89··on In the belly of the MrBeast
And is also an incel...hard for me to imagine someone that Trump would despise more than a guy who can't get laid.
throaway89··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
Things like this is why I've been telling (less tech-savvy) friends to get off the internet for 5+ years now. There is just no way to stay clear of corporate control for the average person, regardless of your political opinions.
throaway89··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
That's a good point, but the Gaza protesters would of course counter that they were slapped down (for stupid reasons) and the war in Gaza (which is illegal and genocidal, though initially provoked by Hamas) continues to be supported. So their protest, while not useless, wasn't effective in bringing change.
