threemux··on Fang, the CLI Starter Kit
Wow TIL cross compilation is a bit of a pain in Rust. I assumed it was as easy as Go. I can confirm as long as you're using pure Go (no cgo), it's as easy as setting $GOOS and $GOARCH appropriately.

threemux··on My Cord-Cutting Adventure (2020)
HDHomerun is so great, easily one of the best, most reliable pieces of tech I own. I agree though cord cutting has become kind of hard for the layman.

Since they also expose streams as http in addition to DLNA, I've used a Tailscale subnet router and VLC to stream live TV from my house while away. It works decently over shockingly poor connections too.

threemux··on Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on
Not against reducing pain for terminal patients - I made an edit above because it seems I was unclear on this point.
threemux··on Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on
I am not against painkillers. I am against suicide.
threemux··on Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on
I'm leaving my other comment despite your edits, as I believe it represents an answer to an important question.

Nothing in my comments is dependent on assisted suicide being available or not for any purpose or another. I am arguing against it in all cases to be clear.

threemux··on Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on
Yes that is the official stance. I do not believe that is being followed on the ground and is in any case a temporary condition. In 2027 it will be officially available with only a mental health issue.
threemux··on Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on
This is an age-old question. All I can do is share the Catholic perspective on this which you may or may not like or agree with.

God allows suffering to bring about a greater good, His plan. He endows us also with free will, which sometimes means we make choices that cause suffering for ourselves or others. Free will doesn't mean all or even most suffering in a given life is because of our choices. Sometimes it is though.

Satan's playbook is all about denying these things, denying the cross, denying redemption. Satan is the one whispering that life isn't worth it, that it would be easier to end it, come down from the cross.

For a even better discussion of these things, I always recommend Life is Worth Living which is an old program hosted by Bishop Fulton Sheen. It is as relevant today as it was when he recorded it. Many of the episodes are on YouTube.

EDIT: many seem to be taking this as an anti-painkiller stance which it is not. Reducing pain until natural death is a great kindness.

You are sharing an important perspective. 1 in 20 people die from assisted suicide in Canada today. You can't tell me the process is sound every time. That's a huge number.

It's false dignity, and false compassion. Dignity does not come from control over one's life, and it does not come from the absence of suffering. Dignity comes from being made in the image and likeness of God. If anyone reading does not agree, well, that's fine, but I feel compelled to say it that someone might read it.

How many people will we lose to despair that could have been helped? I say this both as a Catholic and someone that has suffered and recovered from mental illness.

threemux··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
What current or future planned power source can deliver 1MW power to even the amount of fast chargers currently in existence?! Small modular reactors at every charging station?

The Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Station in my home state of Maryland outputs 1700MW on a typical day. This is enough to power a third of the homes in the state. According to some estimates I found, there are more than 1450 EV charging stations of all types in the state (not enough even for current EV adoption and many are L2 chargers). I can't find over what timescale each charger uses 1MW (per second?) but let's say it's 1MW of power for the 5 minute charge. Let's say each 1MW charger is used twice per day for a single charge each. If all 1450 chargers are used twice per day (2MW/day), you've now exceeded the output of Calvert Cliffs. This is the scale we're talking about.

It's not negative to point out these absurdities, it's vitally important because many jurisdictions are getting ready to ban the sales of new gas cars in 5 years. People depend on working cars for their livelihoods.

threemux··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
Sounds like you have so info that could correct my misunderstanding, please provide!
threemux··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
Good point - so those questions hold for China too. They weren't covered in the article.
threemux··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
This doesn't represent a groundbreaking advance despite the framing of the article. They're getting faster speed by pushing a huge amount of power to the battery (1MW!).

Supplying this kind of energy at scale is not possible currently. So they could deploy a few of these around but they simply can't be ubiquitous. Not to mention charging curves make a big difference as do real-world conditions. Do you get full speed if it's below freezing? What about over 100 degrees F? Both are common in the US and well-handled by gas stations.

Oh, and finally, 5 minutes is still slower than filling up a car's tank.

threemux··on (On | No) Syntactic Support for Error Handling
If you feel the need (as many have in this thread) to breezily propose something the Go Team could have done instead, I urge you to click the link in the article to the wiki page for this:

https://go.dev/wiki/Go2ErrorHandlingFeedback

or the GitHub issue search: https://github.com/golang/go/issues?q=+is%3Aissue+label%3Aer...

I promise that you are not the first to propose whatever you're proposing, and often it was considered in great depth. I appreciate this honest approach from the Go Team and I continue to enjoy using Go every day at work.

threemux··on Taurine Revisited
What got me is I'm used to just putting the html page into my feed reader. It automatically finds the <link> tag that points to the RSS feed. However, science.org doesn't follow that convention. The RSS feed is linked with a nice, big feed icon from the main page though, which I somehow missed:

https://www.science.org/blogs/pipeline

threemux··on Taurine Revisited
Yeah I hoping someone had a premade thing to get an RSS feed for this given his popularity on HN. I could always do a quick program to parse the HTML and generate a feed for myself I guess.
threemux··on Taurine Revisited
Does anybody have a good way to get an RSS feed of just Derek Lowe's posts on science.org? It doesn't seem to have feeds of any kind (even a big feed of everything that I could filter down).

EDIT: I'm an idiot:

threemux··on BPS is a GPS alternative that nobody's heard of
I have an older HDHomerun - it's great! Most of the 3.0 stations in my area are already encrypted so I haven't bothered to upgrade
threemux··on BPS is a GPS alternative that nobody's heard of
You're not wrong, but don't forget about the upgraded modulation and coding schemes. That might actually help consumers on the edge of coverage receive broadcasts and will definitely be an improvement over creaky 8vsb
threemux··on Gooey rubber that's slowly ruining old hard drives
Man this guy's posts are always awesome. The other place I've seen gooey rubber/plastic like this is on certain models of cars after many years of service. Sometimes even the steering wheel can have this effect which is gross
threemux··on ARPA is funding cheap community-owned gigabit fiber to neglected neighborhoods
It's not at all similar to roads, the Dulles Greenway notwithstanding. Not really similar to power either. I'm aware of how this arrangement works and why government would want to create and own the infrastructure in an attempt to attract investment.

There is no attempt at a "gotcha" argument, just dispensing with the Panglossian notion that this will definitely work long term. It might!

threemux··on ARPA is funding cheap community-owned gigabit fiber to neglected neighborhoods
I see - so it depends on private companies profitably providing service to rural residents.
threemux··on ARPA is funding cheap community-owned gigabit fiber to neglected neighborhoods
Cool! So where is the funding going to come from for the hard stuff like long term upgrades and maintenance? Are the citizens of Oswego County going to accept a tax increase down the line, or will maintenance be deferred indefinitely until they need to be bailed out by the state?
threemux··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
This happens at times in all sports. The NFL is a prime example. QBs were lighting up big, heavy defenses with deep passes. Then teams ran two high safeties to prevent this. This year, offenses adjusted again to run more against the smaller linebackers and nickel/dime packages.
threemux··on Communal Luxury: The Public Bathhouse
I always appreciate the low tech magazine articles when they arrive in my feed reader, but some are more realistic than others.

This one, while characteristically well researched and presented, runs up against entrenched cultural norms in most western societies. Personally, a nice hot shower in an en suite bathroom that is as opulent as one can afford is one of the last luxuries I'd give up.

threemux··on UnitedHealth's Effort to Deny Coverage for a Patient's Care (2023)
I guess you and I have different definitions of vastly. Even 68% people who say they are in "fair" or "poor" health say they're satisfied:

https://www.kff.org/private-insurance/poll-finding/kff-surve...

There's nothing misleading about the KFF data, which has been going for quite some time now. If you recall (I know it seems like a lifetime ago), Obama got in trouble for lying that people could keep their plan if they liked it. If so many hated their plan, why did he pay such a heavy political price? Why would he even have to lie in the first place?

threemux··on UnitedHealth's Effort to Deny Coverage for a Patient's Care (2023)
Don't be so sure. It's interesting how quickly the places where this ghoulish view is proliferating (Reddit) have forgotten what they learned a month ago.

The Internet is not reality and online posts are not a representative sample of the population. Instead, every survey of Americans shows around 80% are satisfied with their health coverage.

threemux··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
It's not only Israel. It's all of NATO plus "major non-NATO allies" specifically Australia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Argentina, the Republic of Korea, and New Zealand
threemux··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Not super meaningful in reality - any country looking to arrest either man should tread carefully.

The American Service-Members' Protection Act authorizes the President of the United States to use "all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court".

Israel is listed in the act as covered. Any means explicitly includes lethal force, which is why the act is nicknamed the "Invade the Hague" act.

threemux··on US Government memo shows Ethel Rosenberg was not a spy but executed her anyway
That memo shows no such thing. The persistence of this story is crazy. The article even links to the ample evidence of her participation. Just because she was physically unable to meet assets or whatever "work" means, doesn't mean she isn't guilty of espionage. Now, maybe you can argue the chair wasn't an appropriate punishment for her, but she is definitely guilty of conspiracy at a minimum.

This is the sad story of children unable to come to terms with the fact that their parents were Soviet spies.
