No, I meant "heinous" as in "actual nazis and hate speech".

More no-bid contracts, under the guise of building a "golden dome" that I'll bet my hands will never exist.
thrance··on Starbase, LA
Your strawman didn't show anything, except that you're unwilling to engage with other viewpoints in good faith and will immediately dismiss them as ridiculous instead of advancing actual arguments.

Why should we be silent over the obvious political aspects of giving Musk more government contracts? Just to please you?

thrance··on Starbase, LA
It's just a ploy anyway, to get billions from the government through no-bid contracts. Doesn't matter what they build. Or if it even gets built, which I doubt it ever will.
thrance··on Starbase, LA
Nice strawman.
thrance··on Training AI to Paint with Code
I've been building something similar, but for voxels. It's able to make pretty good models from just Python code (calling into a custom native module written in Rust). Better than I hoped it would, in fact, but it's still not perfect.

The robot in the book is named after the robot in Oz. Don't know where Bytedance got the name though.

thrance··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Ok ok, America is behind petrostates. I'll add that to my comment.
thrance··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
That's per capita. Total keeps increasing: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/annual-co2-emissions-per-...

Per capita decreasing is not nothing, but unfortunately the climate doesn't care about that particular metric.

thrance··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
That's added capacity. Fossil fuel use is at an all times high. Everything else is meaningless.
thrance··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
> So markets are working.

> Instead of politics and blame we need to focus on markets and let them take care of the problem.

Blind faith in the markets is what got us in this mess.

> Fossil fuel extraction is not the problem. The problem is fossil fuel usage.

Yes, and usage is not decreasing. As solar is growing, it's only adding capacity, not replacing fossil fuels. 2025 was the record year for global emissions and fossil fuel consumption.

But sure, let's let "the markets" dictate our ecological policy. Maybe they'll mercifully let us stop burning oil sometimes in the 2150s.

> Also consider the US has just removed a sh~tload of fossil fuels from the world economy. How about some extra credits there?

Huh? Americans very consistently rank among the biggest emitters, basically only surpassed by citizens of petrostates.

I'll just put this here: as long as burning fossil fuel is profitable, "the markets" won't help at all, quite the contrary. And oil being unprofitable isn't happening anytime soon. Our societies are already suffering from Climate Change immensely, and it will only get worse as the years go by. We should have stopped emissions yesterday, we can't let "the markets" take away our agency on the matter and decide our fate.

thrance··on Over 5,200 Ebola cases recorded in Congo
Such a bad take. Africa was still mostly colonies until the mid 20th century. And today, it's ruled by corrupt dictators that the North ensures stay in place so they can bribe their ways to getting concessions, to extract resources and cheap labor.

Looking at import/export and capital flows, any "helping" we did was nothing but the barest of compensation for the ongoing massive theft of Africa's wealth.

thrance··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
Always the same weak anti-regulation argument: "if companies can't screw over their consumers, how can they ever turn a profit??". And guess what, this law also applies to foreign companies selling in the EU.
thrance··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
It's crazy how bad media coverage is. All I can find are naked hitjobs by zionist rags and corporate news siding with Amazon over NY delivery subcontractors, that Mamdani is currently seeking to make into actual Amazon employees.

In short: he has balanced the city budget with a 2% tax increase on millionaires, matching New Jersey. He's moving to give every family free childcare. He has frozen rent for rent-controlled housing, and planning the construction of 200,000 more such apartments. He's fixing potholes (that part went viral, for some reason). And more.

Support is up in every demographics, including Jewish New Yorkers, that corpo dems were insisting would be threatened under Mamdani, in a cynical attempt at instrumenting islamophobia to win the election for their do-nothing candidate instead. Crime is down.

thrance··on I'm becoming AI-blind
That's not what we're exposed to, though. I've seen AI-generated postcards, t-shirt decals, logos and wall murals in shops and restaurants. They don't use the "good" models, because why would they? If they AI-generated it, it's because they didn't care about the quality anyway.
thrance··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Are they still dominant? They can't even win their war against Iran. And everyone is slowly moving away from the dollar. The US as world hegemon is counting its days.

> Trump to Zohran

Pointless, incredibly bad faith bothsideism. Zohran was the only one in the NYC mayoral race to believe in actual democracy. Cuomo's whole campaign was "elect me because the other guy is a muslim, and I won't do anything during my mandate, like the previous mayor". Zohran did actual campaigning on issues the electorate cared about, and so far has delivered on his promises.

thrance··on Could AIs Become Conscious?
> There is nothing wrong with this.

I would say it is, you shouldn't make unsubstantiated claims based on gaps in our shared knowledge, that's very unscientific. Just because we don't understand something very well, doesn't mean we can just attribute other unexplained phenomena to it.

As for quantum effects in the brain being responsible for consciousness, there is very good reason to think it is false, no matter how much Penrose insists.

thrance··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
If my worldview required me to dismiss 40% of American Jews as being "confused and brainwashed" to explain away why they would possibly be critical of Israel, I hope I would start questioning wether I was the one "confused and brainwashed" instead.
thrance··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Tucker is right to call for an end to the genocide, and he's also personally extremely antisemitic. Both these things can be true at once.
thrance··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
As you said, nominally liberal. What Israel is doing is deeply illiberal, and actual liberals, if there are any left, don't support the Zionist project.

That's why support for Israel is such a good wedge issue that leftists keep hammering on. If a nominally liberal politician is willing to support such an obviously illiberal position, then what other fundamental liberal values are they willing to give up?

Ben-Gvir's first date with his wife (who was 15 then, when he was 26) was at the grave of Baruch Goldstein, a mass-murder that killed 29 Palestinians. Ben-Gvir kept a portrait of the guy in his office for years.

Zionists want you to believe the conflict began on October 7th, when people like him have been running Israel for a long time.
