thr0w··on Why I stopped angel investing after 15 years, and what I'm doing instead
> Eh, this is a site for chit-chatting, so I don’t expect perfect proofs generally. Assertions that are backed only by personal experience and hard-to-verify anecdotes are fine IMO.

Source? Footnotes?

thr0w··on The side hustle from hell
> - Relentless scope creep

I'm in tears reading this, I've never seen it worded so perfectly. Have we all experienced that founder who has zero vision for what they're building and is so brutally relentless with ancillary asks?

thr0w··on How encryption for Cinema Movies works
> If you obtain two or more copies of the decrypted content you will be able to diff them and work out what you need to corrupt even without knowledge of the watermarking process.

By the time you've destroyed enough of the signal to remove the watermark, the content is unwatchable.

thr0w··on How encryption for Cinema Movies works
> If the movie is streamed in chunks, only certain short segments would need to be reencoded to add watermark data

Look into A/B watermarking - https://techdocs.akamai.com/adaptive-media-delivery/docs/add...

thr0w··on How encryption for Cinema Movies works
Nagra's forensic watermarking tech.
thr0w··on How encryption for Cinema Movies works
NexGuard is a wild product.
thr0w··on PostgreSQL Full-Text Search: Fast When Done Right (Debunking the Slow Myth)
Sounds like the issue was just co-location of search index + other transactional data in the same table. If you had a table acting as your search index only then would insert lag on that table matter? I could maybe see connections piling up, but with proper batching I bet it'd be fine.
thr0w··on The Unbearable Loudness of Chewing
Love how this stuff gets painted as psychiatric disorder. Some people are oafish, it's natural to be disgusted by their behavior.
thr0w··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
What Apple needs, is to fix that weird bug where my mouse cursor stops responding to what it's hovering over. How does something so fundamentally broken make its way into an OS?
thr0w··on Sync Engines Are the Future
> Abstracting all of this complexity away in one general tool/library and pretending that it will always work is snake oil.

Remember Meteor?

thr0w··on 22% Drop in Programming Jobs
And will continue to, I think. There's probably a long tail of startups that raised near the end of zirp and will have their runway diminish over the course of the next few years.
thr0w··on Microsoft's 1986 IPO
In my memory (was young at the time), 95 coming out was such a huge event. Something about its emphasis on multimedia experience really changed the whole feel of the PC, at least for me. 3.1 was like this arcane puzzle, but 95 felt personable.
thr0w··on What really happens inside a dating app
> I really dread the idea of having social media algorithms decide who gets to talk to who.

We're getting there, whether that's dating apps controlling your stack of faces one at a time, or even seemingly innocuous things like this site's opaque comment ranking system.

These things happen by inches.

thr0w··on What really happens inside a dating app
Funny thing is that when dating apps used to be "browse profiles, send message", nobody had to debate inner workings. Users could self select people of interest, send them a message directly, and know there'd be a very good chance that their profile/message would at least be seen.

Issue today is that apps control visibility, both in terms of profiles and likes. I've tried Hinge a few times. Did like a 4 month initial stint that had me consistently matching/meeting very attractive women (ones in the standouts section), tried it again a year later under a paid plan and had one mediocre match in 2 weeks (same photos and profile).

Skimmed the article so maybe this was addressed, but there's dark patterns happening on these apps, or faulty algos, or both.

thr0w··on Microsoft reveals new Surface Pro laptops with up to 22 hours of battery life
Same. Bought a few different gens of the laptop. Wanted to love them as an alternative to MacBook. To me, Windows 10 is a much better OS than anything Apple.

Fit and finish are good (they have to be, because Apple raised the bar). Alcantara on the earlier ones was great.

But - battery swell on both, killing the touchpad.

thr0w··on Job trends of HN Who Is Hiring?
The market was so insane.
thr0w··on Laid off for the first time in my career, and twice in one year
I think this gets to the heart of the current situation. The hard truth is that a lot of office workers are actually unskilled labor hidden behind the right kind of social conditioning and "professionalism".
thr0w··on The new science of controlling lucid dreams
> I've gotten to levels of meditation through it that still make me question reality.

I don't know if this matches anything you achieve through meditation, but I've had some incredibly complex and vivid dreams that make me question everything about myself and my brain. I tend to agree that it just comes down to an astonishingly powerful organ flexing its power.

thr0w··on The new science of controlling lucid dreams
This was interesting, thanks for posting it.

I experienced intense, complex night terrors when I was a kid, although I was never abused (that I know of). I wonder why.

> being persecuted by police

I have these too in my current life, but as a kind of weird anti-nightmare where I'm actually being extremely successful at escaping.

thr0w··on The birth, life, and death of old Penn Station (2017)
> uniformed

I'm there in person on a weekly basis. Better to be experienced than informed.

thr0w··on The birth, life, and death of old Penn Station (2017)
What, Moynihan Hall, the separate structure across the street? Dilapidated Penn Station remains.
thr0w··on The birth, life, and death of old Penn Station (2017)
They should've included photos of the current Penn Station in all its dilapidated strip mall glory, complete with indoor beggars left free to bug you for a dollar while you try to pay for a slice of pizza. I guess putting the two side-by-side would spell out too clearly the direction in which we're sliding.
thr0w··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
Growing up, people on the street would fidget with their cigarettes. Now they fidget with their phones.
thr0w··on How do you do, fellow web developers? A growing disconnect
> They're usually _really_ interested in properly understanding what's actually happened here

Most jr devs these days aren't like this.

thr0w··on Forced to upgrade
It is rounded and slippery and big enough that it exposes double-tap to make the screen slide down.
thr0w··on Looking for a Job Is Tough
> pest control SaaS

How does this work? Are we talking computer bugs?

thr0w··on Looking for a Job Is Tough
No fool like an old fool.
thr0w··on How DRAM changed the world
Getting a new stick of RAM was so damn exciting in the 90s.
thr0w··on The Part of PostgreSQL We Hate the Most (2023)
Don't agree with their characterization of `pg_repack`. `VACUUM FULL` is definitely crushing, but that's why repack exists as a faster/lighter alternative. Anyone have a different experience?
thr0w··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
> Front pages were full of technical discussion back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Content of that kind is less frequent these days.

Yeah, noticed the same trend. Reflective of the overall, as you said.
