thotsBgone··on Can Esperanto Make a Comeback? (2015)
I don't want to read your words in your accent, I want to read them with my internal monologue.

thotsBgone··on Where Are All the Successful Rationalists?
I think they tend to use a lot of fancy jargon because the jargon is actually really good, and there's no real replacement for it without circumlocution.
thotsBgone··on A tool that increased my typing speed
I had the experience of changing to colemak and then spending maybe two months not practicing deliberately. Progress was slow. But then, I started practicing every day and I was back to my qwerty speeds within a few weeks. The incidental practice you get from typing in your everyday life isn't enough to quickly get learn a new layout, unfortunately.
thotsBgone··on Will SARS-CoV-2 become endemic?
I wonder why we never hear serious talk of trying to cure the common cold. It reminds me of how people who talk about curing aging are seen as crackpots. Unlike cancer, aging and colds are seen as inevitable by people, and any attempt to cure them, or even talk about the fact that we should, is seen as fanciful.
thotsBgone··on Wim Hof breathing technique can modulate immune response to pathogens (2014)
I think there is a distinction to be made between your consciousness leaving your body, and the feeling that your consciousness has left your body. One is clearly impossible, but the other, while less impressive, would still be a transformative experience.

Big difference

thotsBgone··on A tool that increased my typing speed
Did you do daily practice in that time?
thotsBgone··on A tool that increased my typing speed
To me, typing speed is a convenience feature, not an efficiency feature (past like 30 wpm). I have recently twice experienced both low typing speeds (~30 wpm) and high typing speeds (~80 wpm) due to switching to colemak and to an ortholinear keyboard layout, and my productivity was the same on 30 wpm but man did it feel shitty.

I ended up typing less comments on sites like HN and typing in less detail to people on Discord. The increased convenience of having a higher WPM makes you want to write/communicate more, in my experience.

thotsBgone··on EULA Found on a Package of Fruit
This whole thing seems perfectly reasonable to me. The analogy between DNA code and computer code seems pretty direct. They made the code, they should get the rights to the software/fruit. Don't like it? Write/selectively breed your own fruit.
thotsBgone··on How Microsoft went from “Linux is a cancer” to “Microsoft loves Linux”
The 0.59% figure is nonsense. Steam only counts you as a Linux gamer if you:

1. Opt-in to stating your operating system(s), and

2. Put ONLY Linux, not Windows.

Otherwise, you are counted as a Windows gamer. Spelunky 2 developers just released their game without Linux support because of this same misconception.

thotsBgone··on French bar owners arrested for offering free WiFi but not keeping logs
Incorrect. If everyone else pays for it and I don't, then I benefit. Tragedy of the commons. My winning strategy is never to pay.
thotsBgone··on Paying ransomware demands could land you in hot water with the feds
You and I are both prisoners.

thotsBgone··on The internet needs our love
Companies need good CEOs to lead them in a good direction, and good CEOs want money.
thotsBgone··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
Hey, that doesn't help at all. All of my time is already my own, you can't pay me with what is already mine.
thotsBgone··on Social Cooling (2017)
Though to be fair, the part of America which most resembles the Chinese government isn't the American government, but American corporations.
thotsBgone··on Show HN: A simple way to set goals you actually follow
For daily habits, I often deliberately exclude one day of the week so I have practice picking up the habit again after a missed day.
thotsBgone··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
They pay better than YouTube if you also post to Youtube.

thotsBgone··on We need physical audio kill switches
I'm a young person: I used an analogue washer/dryer for the first time after moving out of my parents' house, and I was impressed by how well designed they were compared to the digital piece of shit my parents had. Plus the digital washer had several software bugs which made it sometimes stop washing mid-cycle, but the analogue ones have never failed.
thotsBgone··on Contradictions in Roman law left incurable headaches for its judges
Mussolini would have said he cared about lower-class trains running on time whether or not he did.
thotsBgone··on Contradictions in Roman law left incurable headaches for its judges
Have you considered that Mussolini didn't care about the trains which weren't high-profile trains for elites? The person you're responding to said dictators do what they want efficiently, but don't care about what others want. Was Mussolini even trying to genuinely improve the lower class trains?
thotsBgone··on Why I link to Wayback Machine instead of original web content
I don't care enough to look into it, but I think Gwern has something like this set up on gwern.net.

thotsBgone··on Ask HN: Captcha Alternatives?
And what do you do when your forum has thousands of bots posting spam images every second, completely overwhelming user posts? Captcha may be imperfect, but the alternative is forcing the userbase of your website to manually flag every spam item, which is fine if there are only a couple, but without captcha, there will be more than a couple.
thotsBgone··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
There is no such thing as living forever. It's impossible. You can die, or you can live long enough to change into someone else. Longevity just makes less people have to go through death.
thotsBgone··on “Ily” – a word that qualifies–or adverbs–an adverb
Some style guides let you put spaces on both sides of an em dash, others want spaces on neither side. No style guide wants spacing on only one side, and the title is correct with its lack of spacing on the em-dashes.
thotsBgone··on “Ily” – a word that qualifies–or adverbs–an adverb
If you remove the 'i' from "ily", then you get the sentence, "He distractedly quickly ate the mango...," which seems grammatical to me.

In any case, I'm not sure why some high schooler's ill-considered blog post is Hacker News.
