thoraway1010··on Apple crushes one-man repair shop in Norway’s Supreme Court
Apple's products have FAR higher resale and expected life than almost any competitors.

Your insistence that folks buy trash phones that get thrown away (and are totally unsupported software side almost from date of mfg) is ridiculous and actively harms the environment.

By increasing confidence in their products, including used products, apple does a LOT to enhance the perceived long term value of their product. There is a very active apple refurb market, and you can take your phone and get new batteries etc from apple.

They have a huge retail presence with walk in repairs. They have authorized third party repairs. And they have mail in repairs.

thoraway1010··on Apple crushes one-man repair shop in Norway’s Supreme Court
It's to deceive buyers.

I bought a new apple battery with the apple logo from online vendor - turned out to be total junk. Amazon used to be filled with these junk apple parts - I tried so hard to buy a real apple charger etc and you just get junk (with an apple logo).

Despite the claims here that all this trash is "refurbished" real apple product it is not.

Apple has some lawsuits going about this issue. 90% of the items they bought from amazon that were "genuine" turned out to be fakes.

Apple has tried to crack down a bit. You used to be able to drop a crappy third party battery into a used iphone and the buyer would see that battery had no degradation (it often died months later). Now if a bogus battery is installed you get some kind of warning.

thoraway1010··on To defund the police, activists rewrote city budgets
Are police really responsible for most violence (murders / robberies etc) in the US. If so it would seem better supervision would lead to a huge reduction in those crimes.
thoraway1010··on To defund the police, activists rewrote city budgets
The curfews in our area were put in place by elected officials as the violence was out of control at night. This was not a police action.

The Constitution provides a right to peaceful assembly. It does not provide a right to violence and looting. During the day people who wanted were and are generally able to march and peacefully express their views.

I'm also curious about this disaster waiting to happen. They've emphasized an escape capability all the way into orbit. They emphasized various types of automation (also used by other spacecraft).

18% is not pennies. That beats every low risk asset by a mile. 0.25% is pennies. And yes, all the market data fees, liquidity maker / taker fees - I get those pennies getting picked up.
thoraway1010··on Google Is Not God of the Web
Again, I think you don't realize how substantially better the iphone was compared to the competition (which then has worked to copy the iphone).
thoraway1010··on Google Is Not God of the Web
Interesting - I'd never heard of COSS.

I'd thought they were doomed (ie, no linux cloud offering expected, no multi-platform or open source offerings). Windows Mobile did crash and burn, but Azure actually has linux containers (most common type I think) and their other stuff is sometimes open source / linux friendly now - (SQL Server??) it's whiplash for those of us who were around for the EEE period.

On problem - the software / template they used was so unprofessional looking I wouldn't be suprised if a fake version looked better than the real thing.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. I still have the issue but I do still use pycharm (I do docker local and then just go from there - but my preferred was always basically "remote" develop - I used to use that so if I was on my laptop or desktop etc I was always on the same (linux) machine even if coming in from mac or windows.
thoraway1010··on From Oct 1, 2021, you will need a REAL ID-compliant license to fly in the USA
Having tried to fly with the TSA TWIC card - which ironically is issued by TSA and required endless hoop jumping to get including biometrics, TSA denied it as a valid ID. I had to use my regular DL.

I've always wondered if the agent was clueless or just govt as a whole - why issue these worthless IDs if your own agency can't use them.

thoraway1010··on Google Is Not God of the Web
You must not remember the web before google and google funded firefox!! This whole "google has never done anything" meme just seems ridiculous on its face.

Google took on and basically CRUSHED some major market players and powers (Microsoft basically lost the entire web and handset markets from a monopoly position) as a result of google service offerings.

Check out how much money they pumped into firefox as well - that used to be a major part of their push vis a vis IE.

Regardless of how much google "sucks" - they seem to have at least some things that folks like.

thoraway1010··on Google Is Not God of the Web
mhh___ types this while using chrome (open source) on android (open source), after reading their email in gmail and searching for the latest cat dancing videos on youtube. The sad reality

most of the folks who claim never to use google or google never makes something available - almost always hot air.

I do remember hotmail and MSN and AOL which preceded gmail, gmail was really pretty great when it came out.

I think microsoft may oddly be coming back a bit after the balmar years. I'm not a huge fan of facebook taking over (yuch).

thoraway1010··on Facebook employees stage virtual walkout in protest of company’s stance
Let's be totally clear. These employees don't want free speech on the platform - they want their speech to be the one selected on the platform. The MINUTE Facebook starts censoring some of what they like they'll be out protesting that too. It's shut down the other folks views.

And BTW - free speech does not mean Nazi-ism - in fact, the Nazi's had perhaps one of the most famous censorship ops going with Goebbels. It's actually a pretty good tell for fascism, dictators etc - make it hard for other voices to be heard.

When I read Trumps stuff, I just want to vote him out of office.

thoraway1010··on Facebook employees stage virtual walkout in protest of company’s stance
This I think illustrates nicely how privileged and out of touch Facebook engineers are.

---

I demand the right to protest my own employer. Facebook: Sure

I demand the right to take unplanned time off to protest even if it disrupts operations. Facebook: Sure

I demand to post my feelings on my company email autoreply so other employees and customers are informed of my opinion via company resources. Facebook: Sure.

I demand to get paid for my time off. Facebook: Sure - we give you lots of generous PTO and don't really track you that carefully in terms of hours worked.

I demand to get paid for my unplanned time designed to disrupt operations to protest my employers actions and post my feelings on company email including communication with customers / partners and get paid for this WITHOUT using PTO (but as regularly working hours). Facebook: Sure!!

-----

Wow!!

thoraway1010··on Facebook employees stage virtual walkout in protest of company’s stance
So - the tesla driving facebookers get a day off from work - paid - not even using their vacation - and this is a walkout?

Are they forfeiting their stock to protest facebooks offensive conduct?

This is the look at me style of protesting.

Quit your job and work a better company if you think facebook is a scum company.

thoraway1010··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
Quick note:

Boeing got the big bucks at $5B or so for their crewed services because they have the "better" more reliable design.

SpaceX only got $3B or so.

Boeing running roughly 60%+ more per seat as well.

So a real accomplishment so far for SpaceX to pull this off.

thoraway1010··on All-electric Cessna Grand Caravan makes maiden flight

thoraway1010··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
Just realize that AWS / GCP / Azure have already gobbled up vast swaths of website hosting in all forms and are growing along with some free CDN and DNS providers.

If google said, we want to track people, and brings android, chrome, dns resolvers, network infrastructure, google cloud compute, AI systems, google analytics which these media sites voluntarily, google play services etc to target and track you - they probably could.

EVERY single person (including you) who claim they don't use google, if you dig down, they often are lying and do. And if you don't, some of the people you email or interact with do, so indirect profiles can be built.

AMP solved a need for a lot of users, which is the janky, slow ad filled websites that media sites in particular had become. So there is an actual end user reason people like AMP - it's a better user experience in many cases. This is where AMP is ruining the web gets hard to support. For most folks they don't perceive they are giving up a lot more in terms of privacy, and they are getting a lot.

thoraway1010··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
DevKoala,

I don't think you may realize how much of your online activity is already tracked by google / facebook / instagram.

Google's javascript is everywhere, including explicit tracking with analytics, and lots of CDN loads for endless lists of things (js libraries, fonts etc).

Their properties also track you, google search, youtube, email. They also make software you might use (chome / android / google maps / google play store).

If you think something about signed exchanges let's google track you, and they can't now... please examine these assumptions.

Folks who come up with these super complex schemes (google will use javascript loaded into AMP to take over and track you) ignore that google ALREADY tracks them.

And folks who say they don't use any google products (no android / google maps/ play services / chrome etc etc) are often either lying or don't understand how many third parties load google analytics into websites, or load recaptcha bot protection etc.

thoraway1010··on Google is now applying its coronavirus misinformation policies to personal files
The idea that a file was deleted as a first step is pretty out there. There is NO evidence of that. The usual progression is to deny streaming, then warn and close account ultimately.

Question is this a paid google storage / CDN account? That would be different. It sounds like this is bog standard gdrive.

thoraway1010··on Google is now applying its coronavirus misinformation policies to personal files
Actually - usually it's requiring others to promote, pay for or echo their speech.

I'm free to speak, and make you speak what I want, and pay for my speech, but YOU can't make me say things I don't want to.

Huh? Stand on a soapbox. Get a group together to promote your ideas. You can do all of this without going to jail, but google doesn't have to pay huge amounts to pump out your BS.

thoraway1010··on An Amazon programmer’s perspective (2015)
The loaner thing is so true - having two bosses is THE PITS! That and not sleeping.

My first job out of college I had two bosses. HORRIBLE.

This came up recently, a manager, trying to be helpful, not sure they could manage someone said why don't we both manage them. NO!

The other things - trading sleep and shutting off friends - the first will destroy your quality of life and the second you will regret for a LONG time no matter how critical the day to day was.

I'm not perfect. Setting boundries. I focus on situations in my case - what situation lead to bad results. Also - you can sometimes trade time for reduced money - which in some of these situations is a NO BRAINER. I'm trying to do that. Society really IS NOT setup to support that.

I go home even if I'm behind. I sleep next to my wife and play with my kid. Covid has made catching back up with friends harder.

I think what folks from the outside don't realize is that folks making big money+ - you put a lot of pressure ON YOURSELF. You are given lots of money, often lots of responsibility, your work impacts lots of people (internally and externally). This is even if Jeff Bezos is not your boss.

thoraway1010··on The mystery of 'hacked' Houseparty users may have been solved
You can bring your own IP range or pay for an elastic IP. Isn't this how folks do this (I do!).

You get a bunch of elastic IPs, you point your domains to those, you point those to your instances.

That's secure, no one can use those IPs until you release them. Is this rocket science? On AWS I don't think you really get charged for this even (or very little) from what I can tell if you have them all pointing to your instances.

thoraway1010··on The mystery of 'hacked' Houseparty users may have been solved
You target people using the app. If you had control of verify.paypal.com you'd target people using paypal apps. Even though it's not a compromise of the app argueably it's a concept of the app platform. Users's don't make these distinctions. They install the app, they get a message on the app to go to the apps domain to verify their info (email / 2 factor authentication).

They are NOT then checking that the subdomain was released and got a new IP recently (or didn't get an IP).

These PR people love to split these hairs. Our app is secure - but we leaked 100% of your data out of our back-end servers when they were hacked for 3 months - is another one that's common.

thoraway1010··on Welcome to C# 9.0
Wow - GREAT news. This was EXACTLY my issue, no forms designer.

I'm mostly developing server on linux so I'm not enough of designer to even begin to wrap my head around XAML / MVVM / WPF / UPF (?) new world order on windows.

SO glad they are going to allow for some simpler approaches - and no, I don't want to build skinnable apps for business - I actually LIKED that all the apps looked / worked basically the same in the old world even though that's no longer cool.

We now have some silverlight apps, some IE only apps, some WPF / UPF apps. But the old winforms apps still get lots of use and still work. I've found the "better" WPF / UPF stuff to kind of lag and stutter even sometimes - I've got no idea why. The winforms apps on new machines are snappy.

thoraway1010··on Welcome to C# 9.0
I like it.

Can you open a text editor and get going with C#? Now you easily can. iPython and python notebooks gained lots of traction from just this type of simplicity.

If you were to write a "script" using the language, doing some things just top level is simple. Very pragmatic. I ALSO like that it's an error to call to any top level functions outside of this, so it keeps this from exploding complexity everywhere.
