thomasgerbe··on Are you a technical person?
Isn't the WB600 a point-and-shoot camera anyway? I haven't used it but just looked it up briefly.

People CAN basically use Full-Auto on a DSLR which wouldn't hurt their images but I think that they miss the nuances of a lens or how making slight adjustments to the settings will create a different effect. I don't see any personal benefits from ignoring details of the craft.

"Forget about everything you've read about aperture settings and exposure. Leave that stuff for the people that depend of their photos for their income."

I couldn't disagree more with this. I'm not a professional photographer but knowing basics about aperture/shutter speed/ISO is pretty important to knowing how to get the right look that you want.

At the very least, just put it on Apeture Priority and set the ISO/Aperture manually because then you'll develop an instinct as to how to adjust to certain light settings, and how well your lens does at specific depths of field.

"It's one of the concerns I have with Google Umbono as well - how well can the angels recognise potential for success if they haven't had any themselves?"

Wait, how do you know which angel investors are involved? On their website, they wrote "We will not be publicizing the names and details of our Angel investors without their express permission. A typical Angel with Umbono will be a tech savvy entrepreneur with an established track record in the industry."

I find this better explains use cases.

thomasgerbe··on All accelerator programs are not the same
"When you're recruiting out of college, NYC is probably as easy of a sell as SF, if not easier, and you're not fighting Facebook, Zynga, Twitter, etc. for those same people."

If we're talking about programmers, I think you're also fighting with Wall Street and $$$'s.

thomasgerbe··on All accelerator programs are not the same
Having lived in both SF and NYC, I would say NYC is more expensive IF you live in Manhattan. If you live in Brooklyn (which is not a bad 'consolation' prize since the bars/concert halls/people are great), it's pretty comparable.

I also found it much easier to find designers because of the agencies/firms that choose NY as their HQ. Living in SF now, I'm still trying to find where they hang out.

thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
We'll have to agree to disagree.

Saying it's no contest is a huge exaggeration. I won't argue that BART/MUNI is better than other transit systems, but I still get around without a car.

That said, the fact that transit closes in London and Paris while New York doesn't is a major advantage. It's actually precisely the reason why I have been able to not take a taxi or have to walk home in the early morning. And in NYC, a lot of people don't own cars because they don't have to either.

thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
Yes.

While in NY, the company I worked at encouraged people to take comp days sooner rather than later.

I usually just accumulated a bunch of hours and took extended periods of time off.

thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
Actually there are numerous companies in the U.S. that do have maternity leave. I used to work for an agency in NY that generally had less pay but more benefits.
thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
This is pretty common. A lot of places in Chinatown in Toronto are open on holidays. My parents (who are Asian) also don't take vacation unless it's a federal holiday.
thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
If you're a dev/designer, the good thing is you can work remotely, thus paying for parts of your vacation. I did the same with a two week foray in Paris: work one and half days for American companies, and then enjoyed the rest of the time there.
thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
I actually did that as a freelance designer.

I did some work for a start-up while doing my own before taking a month off to travel the world (literally from America > Asia > Europe). They offered to pay me to stay but I thought, "I'd rather have the amazing experience of visiting friends and understanding foreign cultures than remaining comfortable.").

thomasgerbe··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
"No, they simply have public transit -- it's not great by any means. You often have to supplement with taxi in both places."

Citation needed. 99.9% of the time I was lived in NY, I used public transit instead of taxis. London and France? Underground stops running close to one and so anytime I tried staying out late I needed to walk, take a night bus, or hail a cab (which is near impossible on a Friday night).

thomasgerbe··on London Is Gonna Be Pissed, But We Prefer Berlin for Startups
A lot of contemporary artists and designers have come out of London in the last ten to twenty years. And a lot of the stellar agencies that have international locations usually choose London for at the very least, a satellite office.

thomasgerbe··on BankSimple: We have cards
I've had a very different experience with customer service.

I was able to do a lot of things like dispute charges, change address, and get information very easily on the phone with less than outlandish waiting times.

And I never incurred ATM fees either by using ATM's from my bank or just by using a credit card when I didn't have any cash.

The only real advantage I'd want is more ATM availability and higher interest rates. Otherwise, I can't say I've had that bad of an experience with a bank.

thomasgerbe··on B-Cycle, the Zipcar of Bicycles
Actually it's more like Velib for America, since Zipcar requires you to return the mode of transportation back to the same lot.
thomasgerbe··on The most important page on Flickr
On paper, designing Flickr should be one of the easiest things to do. You basically have some of the most beautiful pieces of content to work with, so all you have to do is lay it out in a clean and accessible way.

thomasgerbe··on WhereBerry (YC W11): A Social Network for Making Future Plans
There's a pretty big difference between sharing photos and going to an event with someone. I'm willing to share all my concert photos but I have a shortlist of people I'd be willing to spend hours at a concert with.
thomasgerbe··on Responding to Criticism
I think that's what a lot of internet users do, myself included. It's so easy to harp on a company for something they are doing and much harder to suggest a feasible course of action that they should take.
thomasgerbe··on Responding to Criticism
"It's too bad we only allow it in competitive extracurriculars (I learned it in youth sports) and never in the classroom."

Art class was actually pretty brutal, especially from other students. Even worse in Design School where everyone is extra competitive and discerning.

I think it totally depends on what you study.

thomasgerbe··on WhereBerry (YC W11): A Social Network for Making Future Plans
Agreed. If I want to see a movie, I already have a few friends who I know I could contact directly to see if they'd want to go. Same with going to restaurants or hiking.

I might have 300+ friends on Facebook, but really, I like to spend time with maybe 10% of them on a weekly basis doing these type of activities.

"...and I think it's good that they're trying to get a decent foundation in place before they go all over trying to market."

I'd argue they shot their load well before they even wrote a line of code.

thomasgerbe··on Comments Are Dead. We Need You to Help Reinvent Them
Reddit created Reddit Gold specifically because they were so cash starved.

I also question how much revenue they generate from ads considering the number of users who use Ad-Block.

thomasgerbe··on Comments Are Dead. We Need You to Help Reinvent Them
One of the reasons why I quit Reddit was because so many of the most upvoted comments were ones trying hard to be witty OR memes. Same goes with some of the things that are upvoted on the subreddits.
thomasgerbe··on Why I get my entertainment via BitTorrent
Are peoples lives that much worse if don't have access to certain TV Show/Albums/Movies? People can be so entitled sometimes.
thomasgerbe··on Ask HN: Are freelancer sites (e.g. Odesk, Elance) useless?
I feel like GitHub is the Dribbble for developers (except for the exclusivity).

You'll probably gather more out of their code than screenshots of what they've been a part of.
