thisisonthetest··on 95% of container ships are now going around the Southern Tip of Africa
the theory I’ve heard says that’s extremely unlikely. The US only has ~80 destroyers most of which are protecting their super carriers. They don’t want to police the worlds oceans anymore. [1] https://youtu.be/mcZPOuI-vcU?feature=shared
thisisonthetest··on Best Pens for 2024: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
as a lefty I’ve found what qualifies a good pen is how quickly the ink dries to prevent smudging
thisisonthetest··on Apple to halt Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 sales in the US this week
I’ve been waiting for a killer feature that will make it more than just an expensive fitbit for me. Every generation I say “surely the next gen will be it” but it never was (I guess I’m a laggard in ‘Crossing the Chasm’ parlance).

Personally I expect a Siri overhaul / replacement with an LLM. To me that would be a total game changer and I’d be first in line!

thisisonthetest··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
> Reuters was unable to review a copy of the letter. The researchers who wrote the letter did not immediately respond to requests for comment. OpenAI declined to comment.

Lol for real, like what are we even doing here?

thisisonthetest··on Game Development Post-Unity
Actually Source was never a popular engine among developers. If you exclude valve we’re talking dozens maybe? And when 250+ games are released on every week on Steam it’s a very rarely used engine
thisisonthetest··on Which programming paradigm had the most impact on you as an engineer and why?
procedural programming (is it data or is it code, it can’t be both)

and data oriented design with SOA and deferred buffering

for games at least code needs to be highly cache friendly and dumping OOP makes it way easier to reason about program state and code flow

thisisonthetest··on Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically?
sort of related, I wish there were a way to filter suggestions & subscriptions. I only care about videos longer than 4 minutes. Anything shorter is almost always not worth my time. Plus I subscribe to news networks in a foreign language to practice listening and my subscription feed everyday has about 60-100 videos that are a minute or less, or a short. But all I want are the 3+ hour news spots they do.
thisisonthetest··on The next best thing to OLED is getting cheaper
this right here. I went from a 1080p 24” @144Hz to a 1440p 27” @160Hz and it’s night and day. It was in that perfect sweet spot for size too, not just performance and quality. The bigger you go the further you have to sit from the screen, but 27” is just right.
thisisonthetest··on Real Me and Fake Me
Not really about the article but, I wonder if Dostoevsky inspired the Netflix show Living With Yourself. I thought it was a cool premise, but this sounded very similar. In either case it goes to show the value of being well read
thisisonthetest··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
I would counter with the idea that seniority and programming ability are inversely proportional via The Gervais Principal (mentioned on hn again just recently)
thisisonthetest··on Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories
CICO is almost as pernicious and ubiquitous. It really grinds my gears when people try to use “intuition” to understand something super complex with no data at all. People talk about “metabolism” the same way.

Say the word “toxins” around me and I will fight you in the streets.

thisisonthetest··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
I left long ago for Vivaldi. Glad I was gone for the ads in the search bar by default. That kind of behavior, to me, shows a change in priorities away from the user.

In Vivaldi you can set nicknames for bookmarks. So you could type

“Ctrl+L” to select the address bar

then

“rv” or “vid” or whatever you want, to take you to the bookmarked r/videos page, which you can also leave out of the bookmarks bar if you don’t want the clutter

I do this all the time now, since most websites I visit are my frequently visited (probably true for everyone). Optimize life’s most used code paths my friend and come on over to Vivaldi. This is not a paid ad lol.

thisisonthetest··on Order your rapid tests from the USPS (US only)
I am really surprised I haven’t heard anyone talk about false positive rates, false negative rates, or bayes’ theorem since covid tests first became available. I mentioned it to family when the stories of conflicting tests showed up on the news and they balked at the idea of using math…we are very different people, my family and I lol
thisisonthetest··on Ask HN: Do we need an easier Git?

thisisonthetest··on Magnus Carlsen retains title after winning lopsided match
wish there was a spoiler tag, bummer. Well, i was only like 20+ hours away from catching up
thisisonthetest··on Aphantasia
> make the numbers dance in your head

That is the best description of mental arithmetic I’ve heard, I love it.

Thinking about it, I guess I solve problems by moving numbers into certain positions relative to each other based on the operations then watch them split apart/combine, grow/shrink, etc. I always assumed it was a weakness in my math skills but the dance metaphor is a profound reframing, thanks!

thisisonthetest··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
I lost my dad to cancer at 14 so I wasn’t in a position to take care of him, I’m sure that adds another layer to the immense challenge of having a loved one diagnosed with cancer. Also, we had caught it very late so we only had six months with him after his diagnosis.

I’ll admit none of my advice could really help for coping or staying productive, I did not cope well, and it’s only now 14 years later, as an adult, that I’m able to work through what was the defining moment of my life. I also was just recently diagnosed with bipolar type 2 which was extremely difficult to diagnose but is likely traced back to that period of my life.

The one piece of advice I would give that I think is universally helpful is to find a good therapist. Look for a CBT/DBT therapist who can help teach you tools to correct unhealthy mindsets. You have to 1) like them and 2) they have to do a good job at showing you how/why your thought process works the way it does.

thisisonthetest··on EA has made five of its accessibility patents free for any studio to use
Tons of games have ping systems that are comparable if not much more advanced. Dota 2 has had pinging since 2013 and expanded features like a chat wheel in 2017. Idk how patents work but it’s hard to believe EA gets to claim this as their thing when prior art exists
