thirdusername··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancers? (May 2011)
SEEKING WORK - In ASEAN (GMT+8) - Remote mainly, but willing to travel.

I'm trying to do the whole electronic nomad thing, but work has been fairly chaotic lately. If anyone thinks they are a trustworthy individual with solid paid work, I'd be very interested.

In order of preference: Chrome Extensions, jQuery, JavaScript, Python, CSS, PSD->Product/HTML, Screen Scraping, WordPress, Django, PHP.

ABSOLUTELY NO unpaid work, internships or revenue shares. Email in profile.

I'm also currently tutoring someone that would be very interested in doing PSD->HTML work under my supervision (it'll be good but slow work).

thirdusername··on Ask HN: Beginning freelance web developer: no clients - portfolio?
If you don't have any projects to show them, just don't talk about it unless they ask, instead talk about what you are going to build them. That has worked splendidly for me.

I honestly believe that most people don't at all care what you've done before if you just talk to them like you know what you are doing. When you see a job post asking for some feature, just tell them how you are planning on executing it.

Also always ask at least one question if you can. It means you've taken an interest and that you seem like you want to cover every base. (or so I choose to believe) That especially works on dating sites.

When I started out in August I had virtually nothing to show because while I had done plenty of programming before, I had never executed and polished a whole project. All my experience was stretched out across years of tinkering, school and reading.

Alternatively, if you want to build on real things you could send me an email as I get overloaded with work sometimes.

thirdusername··on $1.39 for 1000 decoded CAPTCHAs
Funny you should say that.. We (my former classmate and I) built a prototype for that a year ago, but life happened and I never got around to making it into a product. If anyone entrepreneurial is interested in solving that problem (especially for blind people!), I'd love to make it happen. :)

thirdusername··on Poll: How much do you average per freelancing gig?
More often than not: $0. :D I mean they are supposed to pay me in the $200-1600 range, but actually getting clients to fork up money for a completed job is difficult, to the point where I'm ready to give up and get a regular job.

I don't generally do jobs for less than $200 though. It takes times to do research, switch environmental and your head around, but clients sometimes think I'm a typist and should only be paid for time on the keyboard.

thirdusername··on How Immigrants Create More Jobs
Why would bright folks in the US leave the comfort and familiarity of their home to work elsewhere in the US? Or if you think that's a false analogy then keep in mind that there are plenty of European, Kiwi, Aussie, Canadian etc. immigrants to US as well.

There are plenty of reasons to leave the country you are born in, and not all of them implies that you had it worse before. Wanting to get away from comfort and familiarity is in itself a reason to emigrate.

thirdusername··on How do I know if I am good enough?
I've learnt two things when facing those questions myself.

* Only compare yourself to the worst people getting paid to do something when figuring out if you are good enough.

* You can do what you can learn.

thirdusername··on Women Accusing WikiLeaks Founder Maintains Charges of Sexual Misconduct
It's somewhat implied in Sweden that if you hire Lief Silbersky the defense lawyer, it means you did it and that you stand a good chance of getting away with it.

A detailed, chronological account of the women’s alleged encounters with Assange—which in both cases began with consensual sexual contact but later included what the women claimed was nonconsensual sex, in which Assange didn’t use a condom

I'm confused I thought non-consensual sex was rape, or is there a law in Sweden that says women who regret their sexual encounters can now withdraw consent retroactively?

Those powers were stripped along with virtually all others from the Swedish monarchy in the 1974's reform of government, and now sits with the speaker. Our royal family isn't a lot more than a well payed magnets for tabloid journalists, so that our real civil-servants can get work done.
thirdusername··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
I'm moving to Thailand or possibly the Philippines from Sweden at the end of August, to attempt to build apps aiming to be ramen profitable in a developing country and then work my way up from there.

Problem: Worst case, my savings only last until December.

Solution: Splatter "hire me" over apps, portfolio site and keep an eye out for freelance work to retain a reasonable life-support margin.

Problem: May not find freelance work due to bad luck, recession, incompetence etc.

Solution: Apply for distance courses and do 25-50% studies for student funding.

Problem: May over invest in a horrible idea that is never going to make money.

Solution: Aim to build small apps.

Problem: Completely ran out of money, with no obvious way of getting new ones.

Solution: Credit card should get me a few months margins.

Problem: Completely ran out of credit, with no obvious way of supporting myself.

Solution: Admit incompetence, feel ashamed, move back to comfortable Sweden and work at Volvo or Ericsson until retirement like everyone else.

Problem: Pretty Asian girls.

Solution: Don't.

Biggest bottleneck is clearly money, and I'd really prefer not be studying at the same time. I'm also going to be staying with friends, so that'll keep my burn rate down.

thirdusername··on Ask HN: Review Cash Curve, our free webapp.
I'd want to switch from dollar into something else. An option to set the (multi-character) symbol and if it's pre- or post-fix could probably cover most cases.
thirdusername··on Left-sided Cancer: Blame your bed and TV?
As was mentioned by several of the commenters in the article the researcher (named Olle not Ollie) received the Swedish Sceptic Societys "Misleader of the year" prize in 2004.

Allow me to translate the last two paragraphs of their motivation for the prize, for you:

The Swedish Sceptic Society has noted that Olle Johansson frequently makes claims outside of his area of research. Electromagnetic fields are without a doubt outside of his area of knowledge. As an example when Johannson speaks about microwaves it's implied that these are comparable to X-rays and gamma radiation, despite the fact that it's two completely different physical phenomenon. The important parameters when discussing these phenomenons is frequeny and intensity. If these aren't specified then the discussion about dangers is meaningless. Even Olle Johanssons claims about ruptures in DNA-strings shows a lack of knowledge. As an example Johansson recently gave (Stockholms Fria Tidning 2004-12-24) an understatement on the natural occurance of such breaches with a factor of 100 000. Someone who wants to be taken seriously should at least be using the right scale for their numbers.

Lastly it's noted that Olle Johansson has claimed a long line of sicknesses, like cancer, blood preasure problems, asthma, allergies and insomnia, could be caused by electromagnetic fields. He claims that you can get skin cancer from tv- and radioemissions. Especially noted Johansson was a few years back when he claimed that brain damage and especially mad cow disease could be caused by mobile phones. (Aftonbladet 2001-03-12).

(From the Swedish Sceptics Society: http://www.vof.se/folkvett/20051obestyrkt-om-farorna-med-ele...)

Hes been making claims in this area of research since the 1970's according to his own bio page at Karolinska Institutet. The cynic in me is guessing the university unofficially keep him employed as a money making machine, by getting all of those electromagnetic scare grants, especially during the 90s mobile scare.

thirdusername··on Bee Sting Theory of Poverty
Thus, they assign a low value to events which might happen in the future - that is, a high paying job in 5 years is less valuable than using meth now.

That's two different classes of events and you are misrepresenting what was claimed by attempting to further devalue poor peoples choices by saying they would rather use meth than work. It's also insulting towards poor people to imply they are all meth users. A proper analogy would be that they disproportionaly value a job they can have right now over a higher paying job they can have in 5 years.

thirdusername··on Intelligent people have 'unnatural' preferences and values
I'm not sure the other animals intelligent enough to develop a notion of a higher power would do so while we are around, considering our species seemingly absolute power over their lives. Where we at our leisure can completely change the face of the land they live in, achieve unbelievable physical feats through the control of inanimate objects and have an seemingly infinite supply of food. To any other species on this planet humans could very well be cause for lightning, the sun rising and all the rest of the things we've been attributing to the gods of thunder and his cousins. It's all magic to an unknowing observer.

Although since I'm not a biologist, I reserve the right to be completely wrong in everything I just said. I'd be interested in a good and sober book on the subject of how other animals perceive us, if there is one.

thirdusername··on British Election Results in Hung Parliament
I'm guessing you are referring to the Swedish Democrats ( 2,93% in the last election) as the extremists, but I really don't think (against the popular opinion) it's a an accurate description of them. Yes they are nationalists, very conservative, have a twisted idea of how an older Sweden was, picturing some kind of peaceful core-family where everyone is happy in the country side.

They strongly believe that Sweden is loosing its cultural identity and don't agree with the notion of a multi-cultural country, thinks immigration in general is a bad idea and when it happens it should aim for cultural assimilation (language tests, living here for 10 years etc..), these are all things you can have a serious discussion about. Maybe it's true that we are loosing our national identity, and there are points to be made why that might be a bad thing. None of that is undemocratic (as opposed to fringe revolutionist communist groups), they aren't blatantly racist (as opposed to the National Democrats with 0,06% in the last election that has a program about for a white ethnic Sweden and the destruction of non-Christian religious buildings), they aren't violent (as opposed to some fringe Anarcho-syndicalist groups) or saying we should throw out all the immigrants out of the country, but since we have no debate about those issues and have a national implicit policy of not engaging the Swedish Democrats they just seem that way. There are a fair many countries that have nationalists and real conservatives in government like that. In fact in a fair many countries it's not weird to be proud of your culture and openly express it.

Now I happen to disagree with every single thing they stand for even though I agree that we are becoming a more heterogeneous society, and my own views is that we should increase globalization, increase immigration, give more power to the EU and just generally disagree with the notion of the type of cultural conservatism that conservatives speak isn't an achievable goal. These are all views you can engage and make points for and against.

Second to them in size there's the pirate party (0,63% in the last election), which I don't think anyone really thinks its necessary to not give seats, since they aren't more extreme than the left party (reformist communists), the green party or the more free-market bent Moderates (European type liberal-conservatives) in any event. Then the Christian Democrats might not make the 4% after the next election loosing all their seats, and while I strongly disagree with the very foundation of their platform, I certainly don't think they are extremists (we don't exactly have overzealous religious people in this country).

So I don't at all understand who our so called extremists are and what makes them so dangerous that they will taint the majority rule of parliament to some extreme degree. We've had a reformist communist party allied with our usually-ruling Social Democrats for as long as I can remember. They've been in parliament itself since before WWII and yet I don't think we have overreaching socialism compared to other Scandinavian countries or say Canada.

People relate to the minority parties as they do to homeopathy, like they'll have some absurd position of power if they go in as a function of dilution. None of our current parties broadly support the policies of the Swedish Democrats, even if there's some overlap between them and the Peoples Party (European type liberals) and the Christian Democrats.

In this years election it also looks like the Swedish Democrats are going to go over 4%, what are we going to do then.. raise the bar? All this boils down to the majority censoring the minority. The worst part of it is that voting on a minority party is almost equivalent to throwing your vote away, since we don't roll to votes we deem as to small to count over onto peoples second choice so some people simply end up having no representation by design.

In the Netherlands they have proper proportional voting which is considered a good thing.

TL;DR We have no extremists that are even close to getting into parliament, only minority parties that are being branded extremists because they have unpopular but democratic platforms. Democratic in the sense that they are no worse than the current parliamentary parties.

thirdusername··on Wikileaks gun camera video of civilians shot in Baghdad 07/12/07
I'm not sure where you deriving that fear from especially after the initial fire from the helicopter. All I was hearing was the gunner being excited he got to shoot something.

I realize Americans grow up late but there's also a big difference between being in your (mid?) twenties and being a kid, let alone a young one. How old do you need to be before you are responsible for your own actions and mistakes? I would hope it's before they put you in a helicopter armed to the teeth.

Theres plenty of blame to go around but some of it surely lies on the people lighting up a van recovering wounded people which was of no apparent treat. You can even hear him get stressed as the body they are carrying is getting closer to being loaded into the van, because hes about to miss his opportunity to shoot.

thirdusername··on A Warning: Facebook dating apps see massive user drop after FB policy change.
Those Facebook notifications were being abused to send your friends notifications that looked like normal Facebook notifications "You've been tagged in a photo", then in the event they were clicked it would do the same to their friends. I'm thrilled Facebook disabled them for applications.
