thirdtruck··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
Precisely this.

Xe were raised young earth creationist and that requires gaslighting your own child on established science, going so far as to regularly test them on their willing to believe or lie about believing patent untruths. Oh, plus the constant repression of one's identity, the lack of exposure to a wider range of perspectives and experiences, and the panopticon of surveillance by people with near total control of your socializing, especially in the suburbs. That really fucks a child up.

That kind of homeschooling is a cult, no matter how much our wider culture has normalized the literal insanity.

Or a Georgian.

Much more furry art.
thirdtruck··on EU privacy regulator fines Meta 91M euros over password storage
This is why we need regular government inspections that will make such disclosures inevitable. It's kind of insane that we don't already have an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) of citizen data management.
thirdtruck··on Human drivers keep rear-ending Waymos
Oh stars no. Xe heart skips a beat every time a driver goes right back the stop sign and the white line, especially when they practically put their nose in the traffic lane.

We put far, far too many entrances and exits directly into traffic here in the US. The behavior to normalize should be directing folks onto back roads with much saner speed limits.

thirdtruck··on Human drivers keep rear-ending Waymos
Only 10-15 over? Here in Connecticut it's common to have someone pass you on the right at 20-25 over the limit (putting them at an absolute speed of 85-90 MPH). Tailgating is constant. Xe can't wait to move back to NYC where the drivers are much, much saner. Seriously.
thirdtruck··on FOSDEM 2024: PineTime Talk
That's the EU price, right? They're $27 in the US: https://pine64.com/product-category/pinetime-smartwatch/.
thirdtruck··on Emergency-hired teachers without degrees as effective as licensed educators
Speaking from first-hand experience, the positive and negative experiences aren't mutually exclusive.

I might be a college-educated autodidact who made an entire career out of self-taught tech skills but that was despite a parent trying to raise me as a young earth creationist and despite all kinds of still un- and underdiagnosed trauma and disorders. Didn't get my ADHD diagnosis until my late thirties and still haven't been diagnosed as autistic, among other things, all of which likely would have been glaringly obvious to public school staff.

thirdtruck··on A global movement to ban urban billboards
With the long-standing understanding that commercial speech is not protected to the same degree as non-commercial speech.
thirdtruck··on The Indie Bubble Revisited (Are We All Totally-Doomed, or Just Regular-Doomed?)
Thanks! I'm being sincere, at least.
thirdtruck··on The Indie Bubble Revisited (Are We All Totally-Doomed, or Just Regular-Doomed?)
That's the classic mistake! Make the game now, but at a sustainable pace, and then release it after things improve. If you wait until things look good again, then you've already missed the chance to get in on the new ground floor.
thirdtruck··on Dead Code Should Be Buried – Why I Didn't Contribute to NLTK
I can understand where they're coming from but, for the life of me, I can't recall the last time I needed to restore such code after a long gap. If the code's that interesting, they can either leave it on a feature branch or refactor it out into a reusable module or the like.
thirdtruck··on Hawaii Bans Non-Compete and Non-Solicit Clauses in High-Tech Employment
If I hadn't started my new job just this week, I'd ask if you were hiring.
thirdtruck··on Ask HN: What are your best “soft skill” resources?
Seconding. I found it an invaluable read, as well. It dispels quite a few invisible myths.
thirdtruck··on The wealth gap between young and old people
Speaking as an older Millenial (by some measures), I'm fairly confident that "relatively happy socialites" has never been more than just a self-justifying projection by older generations.

Perhaps our poor situation is just so obvious that, instead of mostly complaining, we're mostly fully resigned or preoccupied with fixing things in our own way. We are more Hero generation than Nomad, after all (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strauss%E2%80%93Howe_generatio...).

thirdtruck··on Take-home interviews
This. Happened with my most recent round of interviews. I took an initial stab at one assignment, moved onto other opportunities, and landed an offer before getting back to the project work.

At least the take-home work I did perform in my second-to-last job search provided good, compact example code for my last search.

thirdtruck··on Why slow thinking wins
I just wish we'd learn to appreciate this in the software/startup world and stop expecting people to come up with code/answers as quickly as possible. This is exactly why whiteboard coding is so bad of an interview metric.
thirdtruck··on Asymmetric Information in Wage Negotiations: Hockey’s Natural Experiment (2013) [pdf]
You say that, but I've received offer letters where I was expected to keep my salary secret. Companies are demonstrably interested in suppressing such information.
thirdtruck··on Why I love the nothingness inside a float tank
Good to know before I reserve time in one. Thanks.

Are these useful to someone with tinnitus, or does the ringing render them intolerable?
thirdtruck··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk–they come from families with money
$30k might not sound like a lot, until it's your parents that are asking you for financial help and not the other way around. And that's before adding in the psychological "tax" of worrying about them. I'm not even asking for rich parents, just financially neutral ones.
thirdtruck··on Ask HN: What project are you currently working on?
Working on a client-side robots.txt validator for a client (nothing public yet).

Still editing the final draft of the novel from my Kickstarter (http://planetoz.net/kickstarter).

Finally created a new personal landing page (http://www.jcholder.com). Still incomplete, but feedback appreciated.

thirdtruck··on The Rising Appeal of Apprenticeship
I would love to apprentice someone at my next job but please, theoretical future employer, leave me time and energy enough to actually train them.
thirdtruck··on How much do indie PC devs make, anyways? (Part 7)
Thank you for creating itch.io! I already have one game jam submission up there and look forward to putting up more titles.
thirdtruck··on Ask HN: I've constantly changed companies. Would I be considered unreliable?
Seconding this. I went from "HTML Programmer" to "Lead Software Engineer" (however briefly) in less than three years by changing jobs three times. It wasn't always a voluntary change, but the title improved with each new job.
thirdtruck··on React.js Introduction for People Who Know Just Enough JQuery
I feel your pain. Job expectations for front-end work (and, no doubt, other tech areas) have grown terribly incoherent. It seems like a lot of companies expect new hires to train themselves into unicorns on their current employer's time, when they could just hire someone now and give them a decent amount of time to ramp up instead.
