thinkingtoilet··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
Do we even need one?
thinkingtoilet··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
I don't understand. You asked for a source and I provided one. Arguing in bad faith and moving the goal posts. This conversation is over.
thinkingtoilet··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
It's in the article. Give it a read.
thinkingtoilet··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
I don't understand comments like this. This isn't theoretical. This already exists in reality. It is reducing demand at peak times. It is preventing outages in rural areas during/after storms. It is so successful they are closing down power plants. I'm guessing you don't like solar/batteries for some reason? I don't know. This comment confuses me.
thinkingtoilet··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
We can't address concerns if they aren't based in reality.

"the unhoused man in a fit of rage yelling at passers-by is never filed with the police"

Good. That's not a crime.

thinkingtoilet··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Good news! They aren't filled with used heroin needles today as well!

Let us also acknowledged that we're living in the safest time in history and modern American cities are extremely safe, despite the unhinged propaganda from the right.

It's also the economy. Everything is expensive. Young people are less successful than ever before (at no fault of their own). When it costs $10 a beer with tax and tip, most young people simply can't afford to do that with any regularity.

It's also also competition. In 1970, your option was to stay home and watch one of three TV channels and that's it. Now, your options are literally to watch any movie ever made, watch any TV show ever made, or play any game ever made... all connected with your friends online.

It is a part of it, but it's not just weed. I would argue the economy is the most impactful factor here.

thinkingtoilet··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
If you had to guess, what do you think they might do? I feel like questions like this are in bad faith. Think about it for a minute, and try to come up with some things that they might do.
thinkingtoilet··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
How can you compare the economics of it if you just have the bandwidth and not the cost?
thinkingtoilet··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
You deliberately left out facts to support your bias. 4,000,000 votes case. So 0.01%. If the election was that close a recount would be done anyway. It does not effect anything at all because our system is already solid and that's a good thing. There is no crisis. There are no major issues in this area. There are major issues with Texas closing down polling places in black neighborhoods but lets all pretend it's illegal voting.
thinkingtoilet··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
And how many votes were cast? Did it impact the election in any way? It's a non-issue and we should be happy about that.
thinkingtoilet··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
So we have 'anecdotes' from chat gpt. Totally valid.
thinkingtoilet··on Silicon Valley 'sex assault list' with 'over 100' names circulated
Thanks for sharing. And well done admitting you need help and getting it.
thinkingtoilet··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
Yes. Just like there is basically zero fraud in America. This isn't a problem. It is only for the dumbest people who believe Trump that 'millions of illegal immigrants voted' yet they haven't produced a single bit of evidence to prove it, but I'm sure it's real.
thinkingtoilet··on Claude Opus 5.5
You have to understand you are in a bubble. 99.99% of people will never be effected by it nor care about it. It will have nothing to do with Anthropic succeeding or failing.
thinkingtoilet··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Yes. California is famous for cheap housing. Excellent point.
thinkingtoilet··on Claude Opus 5.5
Has Opus 5 been absolutely terrible for people today? Like they took resources away from it to make room for 5.5? It is getting very basic things wrong all of a sudden.

thinkingtoilet··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
We're not making these problems up. Reality exists. These problems exist. The government is doing it because the population is failing to do it on their own. It's very obvious and not up for debate. If it wasn't a problem, the government wouldn't have to do it.
thinkingtoilet··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
It's two things. When you step outside the HN bubble, very few people have any idea of the dangers and history of these apps. Also, life is objectively harder for parents these days. Often times, both parents are working, and they're working longer hours and getting paid less than previous generations so a lot of parents just dump their kids in front of screens. I'm not saying that's good. It's objectively bad, but that's the reality.
thinkingtoilet··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
>Have you been schooled in farming? Raising livestock? Milking cattle?

No! And good thing I'm not a farmer!

thinkingtoilet··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
What percent of people do you think know that? I sure didn't. I'm guessing to two decimal points, exactly 0.00% of people know that. It's a shame how people can make sweeping statements about something when it's beyond obvious no one knows what they're talking about.
thinkingtoilet··on Stockfish 19
This may be a dumb question, but how do these engines get better when they're already amazing? Is it simply that they look further down the tree of possibilities?
thinkingtoilet··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Often times these limitations for you to be creative. When you can't just throw more processing power at the problem you figure other things out.
thinkingtoilet··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
Many women can not either. And some children simply will not. I have two boys. One would only breastfeed and never take the bottle. The other would only take a bottle and never breastfeed.
thinkingtoilet··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
It also assumes having fathers in the work force earning taxable income is a benefit, but you seem totally fine with that assumption.
thinkingtoilet··on Claude outage – Resolved
We've all noticed that when one company announces a new model, the other one announces a new model usually within hours. I guess now we're syncing downtime too.
thinkingtoilet··on Audacity 4.0
If anyone here has contributed to Audacity I just want to say thank you. I'm not a power user. I'm not in audio. However, over the years I have installed Audacity to do some audio things here and there. It has always been so useful.
thinkingtoilet··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
It's to increase output tokens. Full stop. You think the developers creating a state-of-the-art AI intelligence can't figure this out?
