You can eat well, stuff is generally far, you can't get anything you want without going to the city, but as far the cost of living goes, it's pretty good. But of course, you can only do this if you can somehow find a source of income which allows you to, as there's almost no opportunity there to make money and I believe internet access is going to suck a bit.
I don't live in Brazil anymore, but would love to move there when I'm old, or when I'm tired of Europe.
I know a few Europeans which traveled there and ended up loving the place, going there, getting married and living forever. The weather really helps and it's a experience much different from living in a city in Europe. But I guess some people would absolutely hate it, if they expect that there'll be a city and everything to work for them.
I like doing stuff by myself, so I like that environment. Some people like to get their houses cleaned and their lunch made.
Has worked well so far. Been reading HN since from the very beginning and tested most of the stuff which was added here, some of them snatching me a job in Europe(I'm from a third-world country).
And also has been able to keep me pretty much well on the market. I could have had better results if I just sat down in one tech, but I find it boring.
Think that as you are possibly an american, your parents might be at ur age getting a house and perhaps even raising you.
We definitely make a lot of money, but everything nowadays if expensive and the "end-game" objectives are more expensive for us than it was for our parents.
In the end, it's just a number, and you are possibly worse off than the previous generation.
1st of all, investing in crypto is 100% speculation, 0% investing. I still do it though just for fun, for now, it has been working but all could be 0 tomorrow.
Coins to watch for:
NEO coin: it's the chinese ethereum, there's some talks in ICOs getting regulated there and its looked upon on being the "regulated ICO coin" sometime soon, speculation, but definitely performing well.
Bitcoin: just invest in the most stable one, why not?
Ethereum: smart contracts, the most stable also. Much better than bitcoin, just not as popular.
Monero: bitcoin, but fully anonymised. It's not so hard to trace bitcoin tx, but monero makes it sort of impossible.
Ripple: wants to kill SWIFT and partner up with a lot of banks, basically the "playing in the side of the banks" coin
Also, do your own research. Don't trust anyone. Avoid small coins if you aren't the person doing the pump and dump.
The only thing I would invest in is the IDEA. Blockchain is there to replace tons of industries, we just don't know yet how much time it's going to take, or who'll be the winner. It's very likely that the winner doesn't even exist.
WW1: they've joined to make money, then imposed HUGE debts on who lost it
WW2: they've caused it, they've fucked with Europe with the debt from WW2 so much, then outright lied to find a reason to fight. Then finally at least brought some peace to the world for a while(?).
Cold war: just wanna display that they are the fucking best, ofc.
Vietnam: they've done with the people there the same thing hitler used to do with their enemies in WW2, and still lost so badly... No soldier wanted to fight there, but the politicians wanted. So sad.
Iraq 1990: omg, so much failure
Afghanistan: shame, no words
Iraq second try: so much failure, the country nowadays is a mess, tons of people died, congratulations USA.
If the UN or whoever is responsible for peace for diplomacy actually worked by themselves and weren't just the USA, they wouldn't allow the USA to fight almost every decade huge wars for causes which is never their own problem, but their money-making machine.
Note that I don't support this crazy north korean dictator, he definitely doesn't give a fuck about his people, but he's no different than other leaders we've got globally, it's just that his country was already in a bad position. I hope he goes away soon.
I don't automate it also because I'm not looking for very short trade movements, but more like in periods of 8 hours. So I either buy or sell my complete position in the coin, generally operating 2-3 coins.
I've tried trading with a bot with this system, created by myself, but I've found out that it's better to set up a trade with a stop, use the criteria of whether using a coin or the other and just sell it after a few hours, as hype usually lasts for a couple of hours as news travel fast, so do people start selling off early. You generally want to analyse it yourself how much hype there is.
Note that I don't believe in cryptocoins as they are, for me they are bullshit without a business model or intrinsic value, but some clueless people think they are "investing" on it, so I'm there to make profit out of their lack of knowledge.
With 3-4 trades a day, there's much window to make like 10% a day, even though it sounds crazy, some coins got some big volatility.
Also, some days I stay out of the market, based on my criteria. Some days things will just go generally down after sometimes after weeks of gains. It's better to stay out with your money than in the game to lose.
in the US you have a lot of "self-made" people who wouldn't make it anywhere if the US didn't keep its imperialism, which generally kills more people than that regime, but it's ok right as you are the benefitor of something which happened somewhat far away from you, correct? not really.
becoming an entrepreneur is something only some people can afford to.
it's just life.
The ecosystem is great. I wouldn't use it for anything big on prod though, but it's easy to experiment with and is fun.
If you don't have experience, you need to find a way to prove that you hold the skill that you do. You'll be competing against other candidates, try to figure out how their CVs look like and try to be like them. Complaining won't solve anything.
Then you might have less geeky people and companies, but the overall sentiment that I get is that who does "computers" are geeks, nerds, people with glasses and so on.
Being a male myself, I saw how rare are geeky-type of girls, and usually how many males usually one gets attention from(lots!). It's not that there aren't many, there are many geeky girls, but the pool, in comparison to men, is big. Maybe it's just my eye, but at least I saw how much lonely man there is due to this fact, they lookout for a geek girl, see how much competition there is, much more to the attractive ones and then end up alone. 4chan is an example of this.
And this is mostly regarding to culture. The stuff we watch, the stuff our parents talk with us, it has too many factors. In the end, you are a geek. Or you are something else.
So I think that either tech has to look less geeky(how to?). Now that I've grown up, I'm less interested in being a geek, I've started to look up to fashion and a range of other things which I didn't when I was younger, but it was when I was younger that I've picked my profession and many other do.
I've started to discover that there was a lot of stuff I was missing out, I've never had money to buy clothes for myself, now that I do, I pay attention to what people wear, how to they act and so on. I talk to my wife and she teaches me many things. As time passes, I actually distance myself from the prototype of people who I work with.
To my very small knowledge of lawyers, they behave very very differently from IT people in general. Some people might be more attracted to becoming one, for example. It feels more mainstream. I think that when we make this kind of choice, it's more like we want to fit in. Nowadays, after years of working experience, I think that even me, I would pick something else, even though I love coding, studying new programming languages and so on, but I could as well be as productive somewhere else, maybe being a lawyer or a doctor, why not?
As a software dev you are also expected some kind of weird labour, you are always building, your leadership capabilities aren't so well tested. For many, they would even like if you would just code. I don't like the industry so much anymore. I feel that the industry enjoys the way that it breeds very smart people which would rather be given orders(or pseudo-orders, in a SCRUM cycle or whatever agile methodology) versus actually taking up responsibility from very early on your career.
Coming back to my argument, people when deciding on what to do on their life, they chose something which they want to belong, generally. Girls because of their experience and what they get bombarded by media end up choosing different stuff. There are rare cases though.
Even the person who got a DBA job title and has been working with DBs for decades won't have the knowledge about everything in DBs.
I do pretty well in web development in general: backend(ruby/clojure/go) and react/ember.js in the FE. Can optmize queries well, know a lot about computer architecture, OS etc. And I work with people who are pretty much the same. There's a lot of people who can do the same.
Also I find it funny when he tries to put some figures of years, when it generally doesn't take more than an year to know inside-out a framework(let it be a BE or FE framework) given that you work with it full-time given that you know well another one and has enough experience in software development.
One might say that "ah, but then if you do FE and BE it will always be sort of half-assed". Not really, you can test well, write very organised code and even manage the infrastructure using containers. Nowadays it's very easy to pretty much do everything given that you work in a programming language with an extensive amount of libraries, in the end, nowadays web-development is mostly about glueing stuff while writing good code, everything well-tested and perhaps split-up in different services.
But in the end...
Does it matter? No. What matters is if you enjoy working in the whole stack(or not) and if the company has a role available for you given what you want to do.
You just need to make a very good brand for it and be able to show people that they need it. Once they use it, they'll see that they are getting something better than the bootstraps that you can find(which is still great, but for a professional project you might need something extra).
Also, work on your pricing. Maybe sell a basic version with the option to pay for the (very expensive, hard to maintain) components separately.
It's such a poor idea that you aren't even factoring the risks in. And can barely factor it, as it's bitcoin. What is the chance of this entirely thing breaking down tomorrow as people just give up believing on it? Big chance.
It's completely unusable. I can write a bash script which does more transactions than bitcoin on a calculator. The blockchain model it uses has no scale.
As soon as mining becomes more difficult and we hit close to 90% of the coins and use doesn't increase up(because usage didn't take off, like the prices), this is all worth 0.
Who has hit the jackpot is the one who sells before this ponzi scheme falls down and entered early enough.
Being a developer for a company is pretty much tedious. I have many years of experience and would definitely trade it for a finance job(something I deeply enjoy, portfolio management etc) if I could.
You don't feel happy while conquering, you feel successful.
You feel only happy when you contemplate things. When you look at how much you studied and effort you put to have what you have today, this makes you happy, possibly. Hell, you can even by happy by contemplating your success. I can even read that from your post.
But then that's just one thing. You need to contemplate other things. I for instance contemplate the sweet charm of my wife, the sweetness of my dog, the sound of my guitar.
You need other stuff to do.
I guess by know you also know that there's a lot of people who manage to be just as good as you or successful, how the world is filled with sad people with a good face and job. Perhaps it's time now to look into another direction. I find those people completely uninteresting and boring.
Also, everybody does grow up knowing that they should have a job which pays them well and all, those are the things that society throw at your face, you just handled that well. You need to dig deep on yourself and find out what you actually wanted, and then take this from deep inside to outside, to make it your reality.
It doesn't mean leaving your job or anything, it just means being you.
A obvious choice is travelling, because you just visit a city and contemplate its beauty, the people and everything. No matter how rich or poor, there's beauty, there's only beauty because people are in the contemplating mood.
But then you can turn this to what you want. You might have different tastes.
But I don't see Tesla becoming an EXTREMELY profitable company and others will just eat it alive soon, as the margins in that sector are just bad. Of course it can standout and still exist, become one company like VW or another one, but it won't become THE automobile company.
The biggest beneficiaries of this will be us, the users. They will compete hard and we will get a more environment-friendly car. Government will soon go harder on this and make everybody drive a more environment friendly car. Awesome.
In today's world, this is more important to the world than profits. I see this actually as the new economy. Governments will start to take policies aggressively against things which are better economically, but makes no sense environmentally-wise.
Too bad that.. Tesla is funded by money which at the end of the tail came from the printing press from the USA which makes conflicts in all the world for profit, not to mention how much it profits from the misery it creates on third-world countries leveraging their influence and shitty culture.
Not to mention that it doesn't value in any way the user's privacy, just like all American companies.
How about making roads only for bike lanes, having proper metro stations and public utility(such as ambulances?).
If the situation goes bad, you can always find a new job, but there's a big opportunity for you to step up and try to do something new that isn't coding.
When the house falls down, you leave. But while it's up and running, you stay there and try to keep it up.
so is striving to become successful at work. i can hardly believe that i'll be on my deathbed complaining that i wasn't successful enough at work.
but rather, I would be mostly filled with happiness and joy because of this long and crazy trip called life.
i think if you are easily manipulated by any shit people throw at your face you will feel pretty good while being successful, which generally means that people conceive you as better than someone else. but i see this as a very retarded view of the world, as you might be good at doing one thing, but there are so many things. I just imagine the kid trying to be good at something so they their parents are happy because they are good. When things doesn't come naturally, but at a cost of being superior, or even at cases inferior, it's a bit shitty imho.
I grew up as a kid where my parents would only compliment me when I completely beat up other people in everything. I grew up in this and have attained a lot of things which people from my social circle wouldn't ever dream of, to later see that I did all that because I was actually grown with a very shitty perspective of life, where everything I do it must be to win and I could only be happy that way, I was trained that way.
I'm still unwiring myself from this bullshit, and I think everybody should. the world got too much sick people with this mindset already.
while someone is a awesome co-worker and got promoted to management, the other is strong and struggling with a relative with cancer, meanwhile the other is caring about his son.
i see this as no competition at all, success is just perception and perception you don't care about the details of the ones who didn't "make it". and the ones who didn't "make it" might generally be way better than you in general, but having a hard time, not coming from the same background and so on.
so I don't think anybody can reliably look for success that way, and it's kinda sad people who does believe in that.
how about just being a great dad. having a real impact on a person rather than a very very very diminished one on many?
why is impact important, rather than doing something with much care and quality?
why are numbers important
My parents had 2 washing machines in their whole life, in contrast...
Corporate bonds. I don't know the legislation in the US, but if there's any chance of you losing your money in case of default or anything. Don't do it. Don't look at how much things yield, but also evaluate how much risk there's behind those things. Nevertheless, if you think it's a good idea, as long as you diversify your portifolio and is investing at most 10% on it. The worst that can happen is that you lose 10% of your assets.
In my opinion, just invest with good diversification in businesses you think are good. Read a book or two in value investing and only invest initially in companies which have not too much debt and have had profits in the last 5 years, for instance. As you progress and get more comfortable, do more complex analysis and invest in companies with a more free criteria.
It might be boring at the first place, but that will prevent you from losing money. If you aren't working for a fund and isn't absolutely rich, just getting a paycheck at the end of the month, the yield doesn't matter too much. Just do the math for the case below and think for yourself:
You save 1k a month for 30 years. Every year you get a liquid 3% yield(I'm making it simple by excluding inflation). Compare this to with a 6% yield(DOUBLE!). Just check how the difference is small.
Now, compare that you saved instead 1.1k a month for 30 years. Only 100 more. There you go. Do the maths, all the yield doesn't matter. 100 dolars in that case is 10% of the total income your assets will have monthly, it's a lot.
The stock market won't make you rich, saving and having intentions of growing your assets will.
The main issue is that people don't exercise regularly, while investing and thinking about their future, when that actually makes they live less and also reduce their potential investments returns(as yield doesn't beat time)
Trading is a 0 sum game. It's the same as playing in the casino. The only one who makes money consistently with trading is:
. your broker
. people holding illegal priviledged info not released yet in the media
. big funds, tricking people like you
In the long term, the value of stocks follow the profits which companies have, If you manage to learn how to do value investing, slowly and calmly, never really selling the companies you commit yourself to, while focusing at your work(which usually pays way more than what you can earn in the stock market).
I think generally people are addicted to losing, to having the thrill of winning/losing something, but when actually, if you want to get rich and consistently become wealthier, there's no thrill and it's a quite boring road. It's up to you which one you could take. The internet is full of forums with crazy people which pretend to be traders and winners but they are all actually addicted to the thrill and losing. Just check how much people are crazy about failed businesses and penny stocks. I wouldn't bet my money or even less something more important: the peace of my mind into this crap.
I want you to answer me a question: how anxious are you? I think a lot. You even came to HN to talk about your loss. I think you are one of the people who will never win on this game, but can actually win in life. You just need to learn how to control it.
I've been managing to grow my assets slowly for years. Have been enough time in the market. If you want to know more, shoot me an e-mail. I won't tell you what stock to buy, but guide you so you can make your own choices. I can already live a few years without working, but I'm so satisfied with my life that I don't have to. I travel every year and so on... and don't even make that crazy software dev salary some people in the US can.
Also... practice Sports. The more you live, the more money you can make.
I used to be very sick about trading and so on. Now I'm healthier, wealthier, less anxious and everything.
Then you can just use Docker Swarm/Rancher/etc for deployment.
