thi2··on Show HN: Sigabrt.dev – cronjob monitor with an SSH TUI
It seems closed source and comes with a pricing model, seems reasonable to show alternatives.
thi2··on If coding is solved, what now?: Measuring the sloppiness of code
That is very true and with llms someone who wrote low quality code can now output a whole lot more code. Maybe in better quality, maybe not.
thi2··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
> React Native was always about making app construction easier for people who don't want to learn ObjC or Swift.

There are more OS than just iOS, depending on the app a lot of shared logic has to be written only once with RN.

thi2··on Building a Wall Lamp from Scratch
Do you have examples? I have seen a few US woodworking/carpentry videos and the tools seem pretty much the same.
thi2··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
German courts and technology are not always the best friends
thi2··on GPT-6 Astra
I work for a larger german retail chain and agentic shopping is already on the "near future vision". No one thinks this will be used but somehow shareholders love it.
thi2··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Reading some of these comments is really depressing. Since I can remember we talk about climate change and it's still not in peoples head.

When will it be real? When your home burns down due to a forest fire? When there is no water? When there is no food because everything is too dry? When a storm destroyed your home?

thi2··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
It really is not but I'm glad it works for you today.

AI is another symptom, adding up with everything thats wrong.
thi2··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
Five years is not much in terms of a furnitures lifespan, i own some pieces my grand grandmother already used that got passed down the generations.

I highly doubt this will happen with ikea furniture. But thats the tradeoff for cheaper and affordable stuff i guess.

thi2··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
How is it different to hand written code if the author doesnt care?
thi2··on Software engineering is about managing complexity
I started to look around the site and opened this: https://hack8s.com/409/ziglings-all-exercises-solve-v0-16-0

The site just goes into a reload loop on iOS?

thi2··on Don't Wordle
No reject all button means a closed tab.
thi2··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
In germany you had to do an exam to prove your local knowledge before driving a taxi, this did not apply to uber which pissed the taxi drivers off.

They got rid of the exam in 2021, now you only need an navigation device in the vehicle.

thi2··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
I wonder if the usage of mobile navigation will increase Alzheimers for our generations.

When driving I either now the way or use maps, there is rarely any guesswork or active thinking involved, maybe running is helping but even there I sometimes run routes navigated by watch.

thi2··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
Metas ads are all over the place. Thomas Kehl, one of the founders of "Finanzfluss" (a german site/content creation company about finance) is currently suing meta because scammers keep using his picture.

There really needs to be some harder punishments for this kind of behavior, after all meta profits by selling scammy ads.

thi2··on I am retiring from fulltime writing (& pseudonymity) to launch Guardian Angel
> > "On my visits to the Bay Area, I would ask AI researchers or interns why they are doing their current research or projects, when in a year or three agentic LLMs could probably do them; they rarely had a good answer, or any idea what they would be doing in 3 years"

I heard this already when ChatGpt came up. Still waiting to be fully obsolete.

thi2··on Vehicle Motion Cues
At my first job our project manager was colorblind (red-orange/yellow). One day he dropped a photo of his cars dashboard at a red light with an orange "check engine light"

> "Quick, is this red or orange I need to know if it'll blow".

I'm sure it's a really annoying condition but at the time it was pretty funny and he joked around with it a lot

thi2··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
> “Vulnerability-Trust exercise”

Sounds like an awfull time.

thi2··on Pizza, pasta, potatoes, protein – how Italian children became so overweight
I'm not sure nutri score is helpfull, most people don't understand how it even works and whats actually being compared for the rating.
thi2··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
I started doing this in cookbooks, less of this, this needs longer time in the oven, etc.

The first time it felt like a crime.

thi2··on Show HN: HN Hall of Fame – browse 3,100 legendary Hacker News links
There is a code freeze coming up at may job, I'll probably browse through some of the links in the spare time. So thanks for curating this.
thi2··on Show HN: HN Hall of Fame – browse 3,100 legendary Hacker News links
And yet the search on mobile opens half cut, the dark mode icon isn't centered like the search icon and in the resurfaced section are overlapping texts. And thats just from glancing through the page on my phone.

Maybe I'm too picky but it gives a sloppy, unpersonal feeling.

thi2··on Filmgrab: Films A-Z
Can't seem to change the cookie preferences to avoid sharing personal data with 1175 partners to see a list of movies (?). Real modern web experience.
thi2··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
More than once did my lane assistant try to run me into the barrier in a construction zone. You can turn it off, however its on again after on the next start...

And all this comes with insanely high priced repairs that you cant really DIY anymore.

thi2··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
Your first sentence is a bold claim considering the current state of the housing market
thi2··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
Germans tend to differentiate between getting takeout (something like kebab/pizza/asia box to go or delivered home) or eating out (going to a restaurant and eating there).

But I'd argue for most people getting into the car to get takeout is not very common.

thi2··on Leaking YouTube creators' private videos
> It’s incredibly rare you have the luxury of even trying to deliver bug free code, let alone achieve it.

What? Every company I worked for wished for bug free code. Mistakes happen but there was no acceptance for yolo-ship features.

thi2··on Leaking YouTube creators' private videos
> This is a prime example of why programmers are not seriously considered engineers.

Jumping to a pretty general conclusion there. Incentive packages like the parent described are not the norm.

thi2··on GitFut – Your GitHub stats turned into a World-Cup-style player card
Scrolling on mobile seems to cause sizing changes in the image. No idea what the stats are supposed to represent. I wouldnt call it World cup style, this mimics fifa ultimate team cards?
