thevdude··on Uber starts self-driving car pickups in Pittsburgh
I live just a bit outside of pittsburgh, but I'm not in town often enough to need an uber. I'm still probably going to head down and try to get picked up by one, though.
thevdude··on Spraying Magnetic Stripe Cards with Iron Filings
I remember requesting a stripe reader when I first saw something about them just spitting out the info, and by the time I got it they were already encrypted.
thevdude··on Spraying Magnetic Stripe Cards with Iron Filings
That doesn't explain why it's zeroed everywhere except for a few spots, though.
thevdude··on Strengthening 2-Step Verification with Security Key
I'm just too lazy to put in the code from my phone.
thevdude··on Avoiding systemd isn't hard
Systemd is great. I've used sockets for ssh, I use the timers instead of cron, everything goes smoothly and works really well.

I don't get the hate, I love it.

thevdude··on HBO is finally going to let you watch its shows without cable
Spend the $35 and check out a chromecast. If I'm remembering properly, a friend with comcast had no issues shooting HBO go over to it.
thevdude··on CVE-2014-6271: Remote code execution through bash
I know you're just teasing, but I've got a machine with an arch install from over two years ago that's still running great. Just did an -Syyu to get bash updated.
thevdude··on How Memorizing “$19.05” Can Help You Outsmart the MTA
Tourists probably don't.
thevdude··on Show HN: New project for on-demand chat rooms
There are plenty of web IRC clients.
thevdude··on Why all the fuzz about MS Paint – Just use Paint Dot NET
I've used mtpaint before, it works well for what it's for.
thevdude··on How KitKat 4.4 Killed Android
Basically, apps will be restricted to their own bit of the SD card, they can still use it, just not put things in there all willy-nilly. That sounds great to me.
thevdude··on Fake Name Generator
Occupation: Funeral attendant

Company: Food Giant

thevdude··on Ask HN: What habit have you dropped or picked up that improved your life?
I say "You're welcome" or "Stop!" when people sneeze, and everyone seems to get a kick out of it.
thevdude··on Ask HN: What Podcasts Do You Listen To?
On the non-tech side, give caustic soda a shot. The guys are hilarious and it's amazing fun.
thevdude··on Show HN: Site for musical artist recommendations (and anti-recommendations)
That's what it's for, that's why it's called ALERT.

Jokes aside, having something show up on the page would probably work better.

thevdude··on They said this hack was impossible
The article states they they have to be powered up, so airplane mode is still a no-go.
thevdude··on Ask HN: Will you play video games on a next-gen console?
Watch Dogs will be the tipping point for me, I think.
thevdude··on My tmux setup
no patching for vertical and horizontal splits (I know screen doesn't do one of them without a fair bit of work).

tmux isn't a dead project.

Spirit of exploration? I started with tmux and no screen experience, but I've converted a few people to tmux by them just giving it a chance, basically.

thevdude··on My tmux setup
I ctrl+b with my left hand only. Pinky on left ctrl, index finger on b. I've never had any issues with it.
thevdude··on Coin
That's why I spent a ton of money on bellroy wallet. I've got the slimmest wallet in the office!
thevdude··on Vim After 11 Years
nohup master race.

Just kidding, tmux for life.

thevdude··on Diablo in JavaScript
> speed, lag and buffering was horrible at the time

That has nothing to do with the software and everything to do with the network, no?

thevdude··on Project Ivory - Features and the Testing Thread
He said he's opensourcing it feb 14th after he saw Discourse and that it was opensourced.
thevdude··on Kinda like apt-get, but for Windows
It's the same as going "I'll just save this folder on / so I don't have to remember the path later".
thevdude··on Contest: recreate Mondrian painting in code, win exposition in museum
In the same case, I could say that, because I can't 100% recreate a Pollock, that it's incredibly precise and subtle.
thevdude··on Amazon to Provide CD Buyers With Cloud-Based MP3s For Free
> It's huge ... no noticeable benefit

> WAV would be much better

thevdude··on Linux 3.7 released
:( I just upgraded my arch a few days ago to 3.6.9, and now I'll have to do it again.
thevdude··on Linux 3.7 released
Debian was my first linux distro and moving from stable to testing repos the first time was a real pain in the ass. After doing it once or twice, and reading a ton of stuff and learning what was actually going on when I was changing settings, I was much better off.
thevdude··on Make Better Select Boxes with Chosen
I'm a fan of the look of the transient scrollbars, not so much that they disappear though.
