thetoon··on Why does the moon change size when you snipe it in GTA?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_illusion ;)
thetoon··on Lego axes plan to make bricks from recycled bottles
> Almost all the consumer plastic waste is just put into landfill.

Aren't they primarilly incinerated? (which, unless you carefully capture exhaust, isn't much better)

thetoon··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
I do have real use-case, though : lights on a cable system, but long enough to light different areas (dining table AND couch, for instance). It's quite convenient to be able to control each area separately, instead of needing to turn them all on or all off.
thetoon··on I2c-USB-hub: An i2C Controllable USB 2.0 Hub
Isn't that functionnaly the same as Synergy (which was opensource but isn't anymore), and it's opensource fork Barrier (https://github.com/debauchee/barrier) ?
thetoon··on Quiet – Encrypted P2P team chat with no servers, just Tor
Maybe it's using IPFS to share encrypted pieces of data, and only shares encryption keys through Tor?
thetoon··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
Still not a reason for parents to follow. Replace "smartphone" with "heroin" or "taser" and ask the same question.
thetoon··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
It does somewhat add up. I'm 42, and got our first 33.6k modem around 13-14yo. And we definitely weren't the first ones in my relatives.
thetoon··on Unconfirmed video showing potential LK-99 sample exhibiting the Meissner effect
> but magnets like that are pretty hard to find.

Though, so far, room temperature superconductors have been even harder.

thetoon··on Unconfirmed video showing potential LK-99 sample exhibiting the Meissner effect
Had to : https://xkcd.com/2798/
thetoon··on Linux Air Combat: free, lightweight and open-source combat flight simulator
Disclaimer : I have not yet played LAC, but I used to play GL117 (which LAC is heavily based on).

Though visually it's bit behind what we've been used to, I found some of the fun I had when much younger in F22 Retaliator. And at least, in GL117 (and LAC, I guess) we have a bit of height variation in terrain ;)

thetoon··on Egregoria: 3D City Builder without a grid
It looks and feels pretty cool, great potential here. Somehow reminds me of CityBound (whose dev doesn't seem too active these days, alas)
thetoon··on Ask HN: Are there any 5G feature phone out there?
I like calls and texts as well ;)

One option would be to have a 5G hotspot AND vowifi feature phone, but it'd be much more convenient as a single package (not to mention I'm not even sure there are more vowifi feature phones than 5G feature phones)

thetoon··on Ask HN: Are there any 5G feature phone out there?
That's a real good question. I always supposed their name was out before smartphones (which are definitely more "featured") existed.
thetoon··on Ask HN: Are there any 5G feature phone out there?
For anyone interested, there is a database here : https://dumbphones.pory.app/
thetoon··on Ask HN: Are there any 5G feature phone out there?
More for connection sharing/tethering, actually. Just because I don't want to use a smartphone so often doesn't mean I don't have a laptop with me.
thetoon··on Dreams are the default for intelligence
Very interesting, but how do lucid dreaming could exist if there's nothing more than remembering? Are we, in fact, just remembering we've been lucid ? (and, thus, haven't really been?)
thetoon··on Ask HN: Technology/creative books and games for my daughter (7 years)
For what it's worth, we had much better response from our kids with Gravitrax the Game (https://www.ravensburger.co.uk/en-GB/products/gravitrax/expe...) than the regular one. The material is basically the same (and thus could also work at extending a starter set), but there are cards with puzzle included, difficulty ramps up nicely, and the kids got more involved than with the "freeform" approach.

Turing Tumble has also been a big hit at our place, but it's clearly more for older kids (https://upperstory.com/turingtumble/)

UpperStory also has a new game (Spintronics) which looks awesome, but I haven't had the opportunity to test it.

thetoon··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I got an used PCoIP card and compatible thin-client, and now I only move a dual-screen stand with said thin-client wherever I work in the house, while my workstation sits cool in the basement.
thetoon··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
> I'm happy to accept the scooter menace if it means fewer cars on the road.

At least here in Paris, it doesn't feel like scooters replace cars : the latter being mostly used to reach suburbs (and most of them actually originating from another suburb), while the former replaces long walks - at least journeys which would have been done by foot twenty years ago - or métro.

thetoon··on TextSynth Server
You're right : `The CPU version is released as binary code under the MIT license`. That's quite an unusual choice, not even sure how MIT would apply to that...
thetoon··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
Weren't he rather addressing the "throwaway" user's comment?
thetoon··on Isometric Pixel Art
is it just me, or is there some weird perspective glitch on the ground grid?
thetoon··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
I'm not sure pointing to Google is "correcting him". But yeah, a good guide on how to use IPFS as an hidden service would be pretty useful.

(edit:typo)

thetoon··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
Any pointer on that?
thetoon··on Ask HN: What are some blog posts that you have enjoyed going through?
A lot from Dan Slimmons, especially :

thetoon··on Why you can’t tickle yourself
I somehow remember a thing about tickling being actually two mechanisms, biologically speaking. One is the light, very superficial tickling which only makes you smile, the other is the more intense kind which is able to induce full-on laughter. And they've both have very different evolutionnary hypothesis as to why they exist in modern humans.

AFAIK, the light kind can be self-inflicted. The other can't.

thetoon··on Tell HN: The Internet situation inside Iran
Would you care to develop on that? (either the reasons or why you don't agree with them)
thetoon··on Matrix: Third Room Tech Preview [video]
I don't know about standards-based, but Vircadia is interesting (and simple to self-host). Mozilla Hubs is easier to use, but much harder to self-host unless you follow their recommandation and use AWS.
thetoon··on Matrix: Third Room Tech Preview [video]
I think there something Matrix side which hasn't handled the HN-induced load too well. Even on a locally-hosted instance of thirdroom (quite easy to do, by the way, congrats on that), I've got a bunch of matrix-client.matrix.org requests that timeout.
