thesquib··on Google is dead. Where do we go now?
Anecdotally it seems like a lot of people go to whatever LLM they have access to and ask it what to do. Surely the next frontier of advertising products is directly injecting recommendations into the response from the LLM. Or at least make the answer incorporate products and services somehow, similar to how influencers do paid content in a seamless way alongside their main content.
thesquib··on macOS Sequoia is available today
There really doesn't seem to be much here that's worthwhile? I'd love it if someone made a better macOS settings app, the current one feels like it's made to be used on an ipad or touchscreen device.
thesquib··on macOS 15.0 supports Nested Virtualization on M3 chips
Came here to say the same thing
thesquib··on Tell HN: Windows 3D Pinball (Space Cadet)
Fun website. How did you build it?
thesquib··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
Glypha! I used to play that as a kid, I'm excited to check it out again.
thesquib··on Neeva, would-be Google competitor, is shutting down its search engine
Oh wow, I never heard of this before! A quick experiment searching for a few things and I'm impressed.
thesquib··on We’re in a golden age of board games
I think we are in a golden age of games personally. You can argue prices of new games have gone up, or have got worse, or whatever. And that may be true, but there are many many thousands of great games released over the last few decades that are great. Board games don't necessarily get better with new releases, the technology largely remains the same.

Not great
thesquib··on US Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade [pdf]
I always thought the US was about freedom of choice but this appears to be against freedoms in general. The people voting for this must love being told what to do?
thesquib··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
I have to agree. Lately (maybe year or so) it seems that researching anything that isn't clearly linked to some kind of product or service is difficult on Google.

It occurs to me that it could partly be that the "free and open" internet seems to be dying. For example, Discord or Slack are often used to replace message boards but that means they are no longer indexed and searchable. There are many examples like this right?

The old free hosted sites are dying off or provide no monetary value to Google. So even if they still exist, why bother indexing them.

This has nothing to back it up of course, just musings.

thesquib··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
I already have these issues on my 2019 MacBook Pro. Presumably it's the OS rather than the hardware but who knows
thesquib··on Intel’s Alder Lake big.little CPU design, tested: it’s a barn burner
Except Apple keeps their hardware locked in the Apple ecosystem, but anyhow can buy AMD or Intel
thesquib··on I introduced my 5-year-old and 2-year-old to startx and xmonad (2012)
I had access to computers when I was young, but mostly sans gaming. In fact, once I wiped a work computer of my dad's somehow. Eventually I got SimCity 2000 on our old Mac and that was incredible. These old computers were tools to experiment and have fun with, rather than the entertainment devices we have today.
thesquib··on macOS has become more reliable
Unfortunately they won't even turn on so this won't work.
thesquib··on macOS has become more reliable
Good question. I can only guess at maybe usb-c devices being connected? That would be external monitors via a USB-C dock, and so on. Otherwise I have no idea why.
thesquib··on macOS has become more reliable
The latest update bricked many laptops at work. Like no boot, no sad Mac, get a new laptop situation. We are at the point where people joke they are flipping a coin on whether the next update from Apple will brick their laptop or not.

For me, the macOS ecosystem is no longer reliable enough as a daily driver.

thesquib··on Facebook Renames to Meta
And had a virus that transmitted to humans via the metaverse. Very apt for Facebook to choose this actually

thesquib··on Apple exec: ‘we are the greatest platform for distributing child porn’
Everyone in the world except maybe the USA. I read it and just.. facepalm.
thesquib··on GitHub Copilot
Is this automation of the Search Stack overflow, copy, and paste workflow?
thesquib··on Apple tries to get Epic to admit there's porn on its store
You can download an app from the App Store called a "browser". This browser lets you access anything on the world wide web. There's explicit content on the web. Therefore you must remove browsers from the App Store.
thesquib··on Nestlé threatened with cease-and-desist over alleged illegal water use
Bottled water should be banned, even if just for the amount of plastic waste it generates. There's also research that shows the water can be contaminated with high levels of microplastics. Research on microplastics is fairly new but you can research that for yourself.
thesquib··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I dislike it immensely, mainly because it changes all the time and this makes ot hard to use worhout looking at it every single time. The best way is to use an external keyboard.
thesquib··on Apple Watch momentum is building
I don't understand why you need to have a watch to tell you how you feel.
thesquib··on Fastmac – A macOS instance or Linux shell
Any idea of this could run Snow Leopard?
thesquib··on Worms Armageddon 3.8
Games that keep giving patches and content after that long are something special! Clan Lord is another game that is over 30 years old and still gets (infrequent) major content updates: https://deltatao.com/clanlord/
thesquib··on Should I buy an Intel Mac today or wait to buy an Arm-based Mac?
Yup, agreed. I am already having problems when I charge my MacBook Pro on the left side and the thing overheats. The hardware and software doesn't hold anything for me anymore; too buggy and poor value for money.

If I was an iOS dev I would have no choice. Luckily I am not

thesquib··on Parallels Desktop for Mac Running on Mac with Apple Silicon
Does anyone know why virtual machines running on macOS seem so much slower than the same virtual machines on the same hardware bit running Windows? This is what I have observed but I have not studied it in any depth. Maybe this change will improve things?
thesquib··on macOS Big Sur Preview
I had a new computer pre installed with Catalina
thesquib··on Apple announces it will switch to its own processors for future Macs
It kind of feels like Apple makes the MacBook Pro only so there is a platform for people to make apps for thier main market - phones (and iPads?). So why not make the hardware almost the same I guess
