thescriptkiddie··on New startup sells coffee through SSH
The burden of PCI compliance is a lot lighter than you might think. You basically just have to fill out a bunch of forms, there's no inspection or anything.
thescriptkiddie··on The Internet Archive's last-ditch effort to save itself
We as a society very urgently need to ban the practice of "selling" licenses, but in the meantime we as individuals can and should practice civil disobedience.
thescriptkiddie··on O1 Visa Hacks for Founders
Is that true? I've heard multiple podcasters complain that they can't get their shows off of Spotify and ask their audiences not to listen there.
thescriptkiddie··on NASA tries to jog Voyager 1's memory from 15B miles away
If anyone is in the mood for getting nerd-sniped: I'm curious if it would be possible to see such a light from earth (or earth orbit) using any actually existing telescope, and if so how bright would the light have to be.
thescriptkiddie··on How do MRI Headphones work? (2022)
they may be referring to blindsight by peter watts
thescriptkiddie··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
How can you "steal" a trade secret? Isn't the whole idea that you forgo any legal protection of the secret so that you don't have to disclose its nature, as you would have to with a patent?
thescriptkiddie··on Reverse graffiti
I think an english interpretation which retains the original spirit would be something like: "the poorly cleaned" / "the well soiled"
thescriptkiddie··on Multi-channel Audio Part 2
This might be off-topic, but I'd like to use this opportunity to complain that basically every modern home theater setup has like hundreds of milliseconds of audio latency.
thescriptkiddie··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
is there really no mechanical connection between the stick and the control surfaces on an airbus? that seems really dangerous.
thescriptkiddie··on First planned small nuclear reactor plant in the US has been canceled
This problem isn't confined to nuclear energy either. Just about the only thing our society is still able to build quickly and cheaply are roads.
thescriptkiddie··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
using a mac is all about paying $15 for a program to change a setting that should have been a checkbox
thescriptkiddie··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
damn, hue was the only smart home thing that wasn't total bullshit and now they've changed the deal
thescriptkiddie··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus

thescriptkiddie··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Socialism doesn't mean no markets. In fact, no attempt at building socialism so far has ever done away with markets.
thescriptkiddie··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Engels' concept of the reserve army of labor does not refer to a specific group of persistently unemployed people, but to the idea that there must always be some significant number of people who are unemployed. In other words, a statistical unemployment rate of 0% is not possible under capitalism. This is simply because if there was 0% unemployment, it would be impossible for businesses to hire anyone without poaching from another business. According to the law of supply and demand this would result in wages rising rapidly and without bound, much as the price of bread does during a famine, until it was impossible for businesses to make any profit.
thescriptkiddie··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
Capitalism was not designed to create a mutually beneficial relationship between workers and owners, it was designed to make as much money as possible for the owners at the expense of the workers. Even if that means everything runs inefficiently and less money is made overall, the people in charge don't care so long as they get all of the profits.
thescriptkiddie··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
Not every employee at a coop has to make the same wage.
thescriptkiddie··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
No, they also get the profits.
thescriptkiddie··on If you have first-hand knowledge of the FDA’s torpor, get in touch
I once had an argument with a guy who thought that fluoride didn't work, because if it did dentists would tell you not to use it. After all, why would they undercut their own business? My counter-argument that dentists just want to help people was met with bemused skepticism, as was my speculation that they probably make more money from routine cleanings than from drilling cavities.

I am now fully convinced that the dentist lobby is keeping the caries vaccine from us.

thescriptkiddie··on Rail company that launched first H2 line opts for all-electric future
This is extremely stupid. We have had electric trains for 200 years and hydrogen was not involved.
thescriptkiddie··on Why I Hate Frameworks (2005)
> Oh, you want routing? "Not my business", says React. Go add a routing library

Great, now I have to sort through hundreds of different routing libraries and dozens of different build systems, and then do it all again when I need a state library. This is why people hate React.

thescriptkiddie··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
Nvidia is famous for having the worst Linux drivers. Linus himself told Nvida to go fuck themselves on stage.
thescriptkiddie··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
Nvida literally doubled the prices of their entire product line overnight and then spent their entire GDC keynote talking about how AI was going to eliminate the need for game developers.
thescriptkiddie··on Microsoft Edge Pre-Installing Google Docs Offline Extension

thescriptkiddie··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
There never was an incentive to innovate, unless by "innovate" you mean drive the cost of production down below that of your competitors.
thescriptkiddie··on Iron fuel shows its mettle
> Iron oxide can also be reduced to iron using hydrogen

> Altiro gets around this problem by adding a little natural gas

This is transparently just green washing from the fossil fuel industry. There is no way that this will be an efficient energy storage mechanism and it definitely won't be carbon neutral. Developing cost-effective methods to produce steel from iron ore without the use of coke (coal) is important, but if you want to do that just do that.

thescriptkiddie··on California will begin backing intentional burns to control wildfire
> I'm shocked this isn't being done already

It is being done already, and has been for over a century. It's just facebook boomers got it in their heads that it wasn't.

thescriptkiddie··on [dead]
It's funny how the tories (and their counterparts in other countries) are always fanatically committed to austerity in every area except one.
thescriptkiddie··on Soviet Union sold titanium to US believing they needed it for pizza ovens
> no sane country would want to help their adversaries to achieve stronger offensive capabilities

The cold war was very much a one-sided affair. The USA may have seen the USSR as a military adversary, but the USSR did not see the USA the same way.
