therandomguy··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
It is a self comforting device and recommended by AAP: http://goo.gl/ZnR17
therandomguy··on A new Gmail inbox
This is perfect for me once enabled on "unread on top" view. Currently I have to choose between the two. Is this on the road map?
therandomguy··on Soylent: Gruel today, gruel tomorrow
You could say this about anything and everything. Walking 8 miles to work instead of driving, washing clothes by hand instead of using the washer, buying meat from the store instead of hunting etc.
therandomguy··on U.S. is the only developed country with no guaranteed paid vacation or holidays
It is best to boil it down to one variable, in this case, money and let the employee decide.
therandomguy··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
Yes. Exactly this. Please get a degree. You will have a great experience doing it and get a piece of paper that will make you employable at much higher salaries. Worst case you won't enjoy your time in college. Do it any way. Life is not about having everything your way every minute of your life. It is a marathon. Prepare yourself for the long haul.

If you are worried about the debt there are plenty of great universities which are not all that expensive. Many schools also have the option of GA/TA where your tuition will be completely or partially waived off.

therandomguy··on Poll: Do you use your real identity on HN?
My biggest fear is that when I run for POTUS the media will dig up my old comments and I will lose the election. I'm serious.
therandomguy··on Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project
We are living in tomorrow. Do it now.
therandomguy··on Show HN: Quick and anonymous salary "surveys" at lunch
My take is that everyone should be always aware of their market value (the reasons for which you have stated). Friend's salary (especially in different domains), I'm not so sure.
therandomguy··on Show HN: Quick and anonymous salary "surveys" at lunch
"sometimes when we go out for team drinks my boss picks the tab... so I added $35K to the base salary to account for that"
therandomguy··on Show HN: Quick and anonymous salary "surveys" at lunch
Great idea. Why not make the code easier? Start with three letter dictionary words, then four, so on till about eight. Then restart with non-dictionary.

Now regarding knowing friend's salaries; From personal experience I can now say that it is not a good thing. I come from a culture where salary is not well kept secret and you usually know your friend's. This leads to a constant state of discontent unless a] You are on the top b] you are the type of person that can factor in intangibles well (hint: most people are not).

You might be working on a really good project, but the next day you arrive at work you will sit there sipping coffee and thinking how come my buddy is earning double working on a iFart app?

therandomguy··on “The Tesla Model S is our top-scoring car”
It is the investment in existing factories and supply chain. They invest billions into these calculating the returns over long periods of time (think 15 to 30 years). This is also the reason why we are able to afford cars. If we want new, innovative cars every 3 years the manufacturers will have to ensure their ROI over 3 years which means the price tag will go up x10.

Our world view is a little skewed because of our ability to launch software products over a weekend or release a new build every afternoon.

therandomguy··on I feel like Gmail went from being Photoshop to Draw Something
* I've always disliked conversation view, and I keep ending up turning it off whenever I try it

>>I hated it deeply, thoroughly till I used it for a while. Now I can't live without it.

* The lack of ability to sort emails is really annoying

>>It took me some time to rely on search.

* The layout of emails, particularly when trying to reply to an email, I find confusing - in particular it would make far more sense to have the text box at the top of the page

>>Neutral on this.

therandomguy··on I feel like Gmail went from being Photoshop to Draw Something
All great points. I'm surprised that I never experienced these problems till you pointed it out. Could be because my usage of Gmail is strictly personal. I would have run into these I used it for work (deleting signature, modifying subject etc.).
therandomguy··on The McDonald's Theory of Bad Ideas
How bad is eating at McDonald's for you? If you just get a BigMac and diet coke, is it all that worse than any other food establishment?
therandomguy··on This page is anonymous
Makes me wonder, what have you got to hide?
therandomguy··on Get that job at Facebook (2012)
I was hoping to get an answer as well.
therandomguy··on Here is today
3000 years over 360 degrees.
therandomguy··on An Alternative to Stand-up Meetings
I'm surprised no one mentioned https://idonethis.com/ Is that not as popular as I thought it was?
therandomguy··on Back of the Envelope Calculations [pdf]
If there is a 1 year backlog it is a temporary market state. The prices will rise, which will attract competition, which means more tuners, which means elimination of backlog. Free market etc.
therandomguy··on AppGratis pulled from the App Store. Here’s the full story
I think Simon's point regarding #2 above is that the push notification is just letting the user know about an event ("deal is ready"). It is not pushing advertising or promotion. I wonder if it would be in violation of the rule if the app sent push notification stating, "It's noon. You know what to do!". Of course, this is not in the spirit of the rule...
therandomguy··on The Ouya works, it’s here, and it’s heading your way
Do you have a link to the video of your talk?
therandomguy··on The Man Who Sold His Fate to Investors at $1 a Share
Around $220K. Less than a third for a decent condo in major cities.
therandomguy··on This Man Thinks He Never Has to Eat Again
I don't know how effective his particular recipe is, but this is a pretty important concept (and not a new one). He nails it when he says that eating is a social activity like going to the movies, but you might not want to do it 3 times a day. People are resisting it now because it doesn't sound "natural" but it will definitely be the new normal.

If we do end up developing a meal substitute it could also provide a solution to world hunger. I remember reading about a gel that is distributed to Africa in cans which was helping the food problem there (can't find it via Google now).

therandomguy··on Official Hacker News T-Shirt
I like this. I was ready to jump in here an complain about attracting attention from outside the hacker community. But this is perfect.
therandomguy··on The Coolest Experience I Had as an Apple Store Employee
Does this particular employee also have other motor disabilities? Because he once helped me with check out. He was walking around the floor with what seemed like a special software on an iPhone attached to a scanner. I was amazed that the entire transaction took around 30 seconds and I was on my way.
therandomguy··on Tesla says it lost “hundreds” of orders after New York Times controversy
He is comparing apples to oranges because the readers of NYT are orange buyers. All the NYT article says is that this is an apple... not orange.
therandomguy··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
The point being, he was not.
therandomguy··on Say no to new clients: “For that reason, I’m out.”
Isn't this similar to the car salesman interviewing me about how I will drive, who I will give a ride to etc. and then refusing to sell me the car? Doesn't sound like a great strategy for the seller. How about just sell the car?
therandomguy··on I made $200K and PayPal locked my account
If you are on a student visa you are not allowed to get that money even if you had a SSN. You will be violating the rules of your visa. After you graduate, find a job and go on H1-B you still can't earn any money outside that job. No paypal, not adsense, no stripe. Eventually if you decide to apply for a green card these things will come up and you will have to leave the country.
therandomguy··on Michael Moritz on immigration reform
It is difficult only if you are from Indian or China.
