theonething··on Cursor IDE support hallucinates lockout policy, causes user cancellations
so your saying that yes you do "trust other developers to write good code without mistakes without getting it reviewed by others."

And then you say "by the time the rest of the team reviews it. Most code review is uneventful."

So you trust your team to develop without the need for code review but yet, your team does code review.

So what is the purpose of these code reviews? Is it the case that you actually don't think they are necessary, but perhaps management insists on them? You actually answer this question yourself:

> Most code review is uneventful.

Keyword here is "most" as opposed to "all" So based your team's applied practices and your own words, code review is for the purpose of catching mistakes and other needed corrections.

But it seems to me if you trust your team not to make mistakes, code review is superfluous.

As an aside, it seems your team culture doesn't make room for juniors because if your team had juniors I think it would be even more foolish to trust them not to make mistakes. Maybe a junior free culture works for your company, but that's not the case for every company.

My main point is code review is not superfluous no matter the skill level; junior, senior, or AI simply because everyone and every AI makes mistakes. So I don't trust those three classes of code emitters to not ever make mistakes or bad choices (i.e. be perfect) and therefore I think code review is useful.

Have some honesty and humility and you'll amazed at what's possible.

Ok, here I thought requiring PR review and approval before merging was standard industry best practice. I guess all the places I've worked have been doing it wrong?

The gatekeepers are witnessing the gate opening up more and letting more people in and they don't like that at all.

> with debian, python and vim

Why are you cheapening the product, butchering the process and decimating any hope for further skill development by using these tools?

Instead of python, you should be using assembly or heck, just binary. Instead of relying on an OS abstraction layer made by someone else, you should write everything from scratch on the bare metal. Don't lower yourself by using a text editor, go hex. Then your code will truly be "hand crafted". You'll have even more reason to be proud.

> I can't think of another development tool we'd say this about.

Because no other dev tool actually generates unique code like AI does. So you treat it like the other components of your team that generates code, the other developers. Do you trust other developers to write good code without mistakes without getting it reviewed by others. Of course not.

> it hallucinated a missing brace (my code parsed fine), "helpfully" inserted it, and then proceeded to break everything.

Your tone is rather hyperbolic here, making it sound like an extra brace resulted in a disaster. It didn't. It was easy to detect and easy to fix. Not a big deal.

> don't really care how polite they go about it.

Does that apply to everybody or just customer service people?

How about your coworker, boss, teacher, spouse, children, parents? Say you make a mistake and they correct you by saying "Not like that, you fuckhead". That's no different to you than "Oh, oops, I think it's this way."?

Even a customer service person, if they correct you the first way, you don't mind?

anybody use Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT,etc for fixing css issues? I've tried with Claude 3.7 with lackluster results. I provided a screen shot and asked it to fix an unwanted artifact.

Wondering about other people's experiences.

Because you don't know who Yegge is, the words are meaningless to you? So a body of text is meaningful only if you know who the author is? That's...lame.

theonething··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
My take doesn't conform to HN leanings on this:

Zelensky messed up here. He and his country are a position of need. Ukraine needs the US, not the other way around. In that position, you don't walk into the Oval Office arms crossed, eyes rolling, head shaking with your demands. You come in with the understanding the US has given you over $300 billion in aid, the US is offering a minerals rights deal that benefits your country economically and binds the US and Ukraine closer economically, politically and most likely militarily (the US protects its interests abroad). Given that, you come in with a thankful attitude seeing that this deal is the beginning, not the end of the solution to your problems. It's a very good beginning. You'll have disagreements with the President for sure. You air those out behind close doors, not in the house of your guests/benefactors for all the world to see. This is basic diplomacy.

This deal is very good for Ukraine. It's in Zelensky's court to salvage the damage he's caused. The Ukrainian people depend on it.

theonething··on The Efficiency of Vim
All these people claiming Vim is not efficient because they don't know how to use it well.
theonething··on The Efficiency of Vim
Nope, you go to the word, do 'cw' (change word). That deletes the word under your cursor and automatically puts you in insert mode. Then you write your new word. I love it.

DOGE's biggest targets thus far have been FEMA and USAID. These two orgs are actively monitoring Musk and his companies?

theonething··on Cybertrucks Are Deadlier Than Infamous Ford Pintos
The thing is, the solicitation was initiated under the Biden administration and when Trump/Musk found out about it, they actually halted it [0]

> Vehicles made by Elon Musk’s company were on a purchase list issued before Donald Trump was inaugurated, and before Mr. Musk became one of the president’s top advisers.[1]

Sorry, but the basis for your narrative just blew up. But I'm sure you'll try to find a way to blame Trump/Musk for this anyway.

theonething··on Cybertrucks Are Deadlier Than Infamous Ford Pintos
Wow, this false statement and these comments just falling in line with the leftist narrative even when it's based on pure lies.

Here are the facts.

- this solicitation for purchasing armored electric vehicles was initiated by the Biden administration.

- when Trump/Musk found out about this, they actually halted it

> In a statement, the State Department said the contract started in the Biden administration "to explore interest from private companies to produce armored electric vehicles."

>Tesla was the only company to express interest in the department's request at the time.

>Typically the next step would be "an official solicitation" for vehicle manufacturers to bid. But the solicitation is now on hold, according to a State Department spokesperson.

theonething··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
> I went to the CBP website and you went to twitter

I went to Google and the twitter post from the official account of the CBP chief came up in search results. You claimed that reports from January from CBP weren't posted so I "have no idea what is actually happening.". You are wrong. Based on numbers from the CBP chief himself, I do have an idea of what is happening.

You also posited "More likely is that Trump destablised the west and caused a net increase in illegal migration attempts." when actually, based on the CBP numbers, the opposite has happened under Trump's leadership.

> You've spent the entire thread making unsubstantiated claims about trans people based on right wing propaganda

If you you actually go through this thread again, you'll see I mostly discussed tariffs and immigration. Out of this entire thread, I've written one phrase about the transgender issue:

> "allowing biological men to destroy women in sports, not being willing to define what a woman is"

And both of those claims have been well documented. They are facts, not propaganda. E.g. high school volleyball play Payton McNabb who sustained life long head injuries when a trans gender player spiked a ball in her face. E.g. at Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation hearing she was asked if she could define what a woman is and her reply was "I can't --".

Again, you are not operating in truth.

> ad hominem attacks downthread is all you are good for, why would I waste actual effort on you?

You are part of the "smug left"[0]. It's no wonder Joe Klein says this about the Democratic party ""The intellectual corrosion is comprehensive; it is only matched by the self-righteous arrogance.". I'm not sure about the first part, I avoid calling people stupid, but the latter point about the arrogance of the left is spot on.

theonething··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
> Ok propaganda. CBP doesn't have numbers for January posted, so you have no idea what is actually happening.

the above is what you claimed and are undeniably wrong about.

You can't admit error because you don't operate in truth, just emotions. When confronted with truth, you twist it to fit your narrative as you're doing here.

And the quality of the words (or lack thereof) that you choose to use e.g. feckless, dork, anti-social losers, weird, loathe reflects on you and your character and state of mind more than anything else. Here they are categorized as ad hominem attacks and are not looked upon highly because the kind of people who use them lack substantial arguments and thus resort to these low effort personal attacks.

You're asking when did this happen: "the left dismantling the shadow right"

here, when the IRS under Obama discriminated against conservative and Christian groups for applications for tax exempt status

> The consent order says the IRS admits it wrongly used "heightened scrutiny and inordinate delays" and demanded unnecessary information as it reviewed applications for tax-exempt status. The order says, "For such treatment, the IRS expresses its sincere apology."
