Sounds like you are already doing most of the CTO work and virtually getting recognized as such. Step up and claim the CTO position.

theoj··on What are some interesting uses of WebUSB you have come across?
It's great for quads, I've used this to flash ESC firmware in the field with just a mobile browser and Internet connection: https://esc-configurator.com/

Bingo! Wall St wants a monopoly on ALL your retirement funds. Your typical employer 401k plan offers only mutual funds run by Wall St. No investing in alternate assets such as real estate or crypto. The big boys get their cut AND make sure you are not crowding the field in lucrative investments.

theoj··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
What's super annoying is that Dell does not provide a BIOS option to switch between connected standby and S3. It's likely a cost saving decision because S3 is more complex to implement and having both options even more so. There are also some rumors that Dell may be under contractual agreement with MS to only support connected standby.
theoj··on We Like You So Much and Want to Know You Better
It seems to be a subtle critique of Google. I read it as Circle = Google, ad business where Mae works = AdWords, tablets = Android, zings = tweets / Google+ shares, new camera = Google Glass.

Interesting to see how companies sometimes have very similar looking apps across all or some platforms (Facebook), while others are at the opposite end and have completely different experiences (KickStarter).

In a few years we could have tri-band routers covering 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 60Ghz. Correlating the info from all these frequencies should provide a much better picture.

SEEKING WORK - NYC or remote.

I am a software engineer who focuses on Android development. Within the last 2 years, I have worked on projects for for small and large startups, as well as for brands such as AT&T, Anheuser Busch and Victoria Secret. Within that period I have completed over seven apps and two mobile SDKs. I am deeply passionate about mobile development and creating top-notch experiences.

What can I do for you? Here are some things I specialize in:

* iOS to Android Ports. Do you have an iOS app that you want to port to Android? I can take the existing iOS experience, modify it to conform to Android standards and deliver a polished high-quality Android app. I have done this successfully for multiple clients such Gving and Snapr (see my portfolio below [1]).

* Web Apps. Do you have a mobile site that you want to convert to an app? I can package the mobile web content and create a mobile app using a standard solution like PhoneGap or a custom web wrapper. For more advanced projects I can create a hybrid app that combines the best of the web and native worlds to fully access all the capabilities of the mobile device. Some sample projects in this category include JackThreads and Snapr (see my portfolio below [1]).

* App Rescue and App Optimization. Do you have an Android app that isn't quite working? Perhaps it crashes, it's slow or has other problems? I can perform a complete analysis, diagnose the issues and quickly fix them. For a sample project in this category see Loc8te in my portfolio below [1].

* SDKs. Do you have some awesome stuff that you want everyone to use in their own apps? I can put together a feature rich SDK that lets other developers easily access your app's functionality / services. I have done this for Snapr and Loc8te (see my portfolio below [1]).

Feel free to get in touch. My portfolio and email are listed below.

theoj··on What's Going On (on "Why Python, Ruby, and Javascript are Slow")
You conveniently forgot a key bottleneck: the amount of RAM on your server. That's what determines how many concurrent sessions you can keep running before performance degrades and you need to add another server.

I am a software engineer and technology consultant who focuses on building Android apps. Within the last 2 years, I have built six Android apps and two SDKs. I am deeply passionate about mobile development and creating top-notch experiences.

What can I do for you? Here are some examples:

* iOS to Android Ports. You have an iOS app that you would like to port to Android. I can take the existing iOS experience, make it conform to Android standards and deliver a polished high-quality app.

* Web Apps. You have a mobile site that you want to convert to an app. I can take the web content and create an app using an existing solution like PhoneGap or a custom web wrapper. We can go one step further and create a hybrid app that combine the best of the web and native worlds to fully leverage all the capabilities of the mobile device.

* App Rescue and Optimization. You have an Android app that isn't quite performing. Perhaps it crashes, it's slow or has other problems. I can take a look, diagnose the issues and fix them.

* SDKs. You have some awesome functionality that you'd like developers to use in their apps. I can put together an SDK or library that lets developers easily do that.

* Strategy. Need advice on how to best approach Android development? Perhaps you are wondering what features your app should have to be successful? Or you have concerns about how to best approach testing on the myriad of Android devices? I can put together a plan that addresses issues like these and many more.

theoj··on How to calculate your hourly rate
Yes, because the value consultant charges more but also provides more. In addition to understanding the technical aspects, he also understands the business aspects and can speak the client's language (business goals) freeing the client from having to micro manage or go deep into the weeds of the tech nitty-gritty. Best of all, the value driven consultant knows what's truly important and can intelligently focus his technical efforts on those areas which provide the biggest payoff.

As others have stated elsewhere in this thread: there are people who are willing to pay you a lot of money so you can free up their time and let them focus on activities that generate a boatload more money than $10K. These are the people who will happily choose the $20K offer, and these are the people you want to work with.

theoj··on DUNS - the fraudulent secret startup cost of iOS development
There was another article recently about the awful DUNS # process for the App Store. You can find some good tips in the comments, including applying via the federal site and applying via Apple's form. Readers suggest both of these methods are faster.

theoj··on How To Learn To Code In 2013
>> The reason it’s so hard for adults to learn new things is that there is no authority figure punishing them if they fail.

I think it's way more than that. Once you're out of school, there is no one to set goals for you. Even assuming you do have goals, there are no structured classes or textbooks to get you to those goals with your eyes closed. You are essentially both the teacher and the pupil and you must figure out your own curriculum in addition to doing the learning.

theoj··on Apple's Company Registration for its App Store is Awkward and Awful
Getting the free DUNS number is awkward and awful even in the US. D&B calls you about 24 hours after you place your order and tries to sign you to a paid package (perhaps suggesting that the free DUNS is no good for the AppStore). Once you refuse they let you wait -- supposedly for 30 business days, but you can wait a lifetime since they don't bother contacting you again. The DUNS number gets silently issued after 30 business days with no phone call or email notification.

SEEKING WORK - NYC or remote. I am a mobile engineer who focuses on Android Java development. I have built and deployed four Android apps and two Android SDKs for a number of clients, both large and small. One of the SDKs I built, SnaprKit, has over 300,000 users. You can see all of the apps I worked on in my portfolio below:

I have a deep understanding of the mobile stack, having previously worked with low level C and backend technologies (PHP, some Rails). I also have previous experience with HTML/CSS/JavaScript, which comes in handy if you need me to work on hybrid HTML/native apps.

theoj··on Ideas aren't worthless
>> And ideally, everyone should be in the executing group. There shouldn't ever be an "idea" person.

Agree 100%. Instead of an "idea" person, opt for a "business" person. A "business" person can do the idea person's job and several more. That means he can bring much more value to the table in a startup.

theoj··on Ideas aren't worthless
>> many are sick of people that don't value the ability to execute

>> business isn't just about "execution" of an idea into a product

The ability to execute is not limited to engineering. It's also applicable to the business side (ability to successfully secure funding, find product market fit, create a marketing and pricing strategy that works, etc).

The other thing is that you cannot neatly separate ideas and execution. As you break a high level problem into its components, there are ideas at every lower level that will allow you to succeed. A high level idea cannot succeed without the supporting lower level ideas (strategies and tactics) in a variety of disciplines (marketing, product, engineering, etc). If we take Facebook as an example: many people at several universities had the broad idea, but only one set of people also had the lower level strategies and tactics to turn that idea into a multi-billion dollar company.

My take on this: good high level ideas are worthless without the appropriate low level supporting ideas.

theoj··on How to beat comment spam
There is a Wordpress plugin called Spam Free Wordpress that implements a variation of this and has effectively cut spam on my sites to zero.

The plugin improves on the method described by randomly generating the value of the additional token parameter, and keeping a list of all generated tokens. If the server receives a comment post request which does not contain one of the generated tokens, then that comment is guaranteed to be automated spam.
